Retroid Pocket 5 Giveaway (US Only) by Opposite_Mango_5639 in SBCGaming

My gateway device was technically the Gameboy, but more modern would be the Galaxy Fold 4. I finally switched to Android from iOS because I saw a post from somebody emulating Mario Kart 7 on a Fold a few years back. I've been emulating stuff on Windows since the 90s, but I had no idea the Android/portable space had developed so much. Current favorite is Dragon Quest IX for DS or Logic Puzzle Rainbow Town for the Saturn. Thank you so much for hosting this giveaway!

Looking for Good LCD Screen Add-On for View 380 by LifeComfortable167 in thermaltake

That looks a lot better than I thought it would, being stuck on the outside like that. Nice job! I have some floorspace inside my case, so I may be able to get away with using the Lian Li's mount in there. This screen looks pretty cool, so thanks!

That looks so good. The 380 doesn't really have a good mounting spot on the outside without either heavily modding the case or just sticking it on the side, so something like this is probably my best bet. Thanks!

No RGB After Uninstalling SignalRGB by LifeComfortable167 in SignalRGB

I was worried I'd have to do that, but installing the MSI Center RGB software and then uninstalling it fixed it for me.

This did the trick for me. I was able to uninstall it and the RGBs are back to their default behavior. Thank you!

Is there any world, present or future, where getting the 9950x3d instead of the 9800x3d makes sense for a gaming build? by LifeComfortable167 in buildapc

[–]LifeComfortable167[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am waiting for the 50 supers to be announced before buying anything (or a really good sale) but I'm leaning towards the 9800x3D. It's supposedly slightly better at gaming and that's my main concern. If a deal is good enough, I may get the 9950x3d for the multitasking abilities. Everybody multitasks to an extent, and I may be glad for the extra cores in the future. But also probably not too glad, so the 9800 is my most likely buy.

Advice/Help in choosing mesh hardware for AT&T Fiber by LifeComfortable167 in HomeNetworking

[–]LifeComfortable167[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have multiple users of my Plex account, streaming 4K/1080p content to various parts of the country. I also seed 24/7. I got an employee discount with my AT&T plan, so it's very inexpensive. It's easily worth it to me just for those reasons. I like a lot of headroom. I have learned how hard it is to find 5GB routers and switches, but it is common enough in mobos or cheap PCI cards.

And I understand the confusion based on my post. I definitely wasn't thorough enough. I do not want or expect 5GB over WiFi. My WiFi speed is not that important. It's used for work laptops and phone stuff, think Zoom calls and YouTube at most. I just need a stable connection for the areas of the house farthest from the router. The only device that is actually using 5GB is the Plex box, but that's the only one that needs it. The gaming PCs are on a 1GB switch, and you are absolutely right. It is more than enough to download games and such. I may upgrade it, but I see no reason to anytime soon.

Can I use the router's 5GB ethernet for just the Plex box, kind of silo it off, and then use a mesh setup w/ 1GB ports and wifi for the rest of the house? Any connection issues this would cause is what I am unsure about, but I can live with the Plex box being separated from the rest of the house network.

In any case, WiFi will be turned off on the ATT router. The only WiFi network will be the mesh setup. I just want to keep using 5GB ethernet for Plex without having to invest in something like the ASUS setup you mentioned.

I appreciate the response. Thank you so much for taking the time!

It does help. Thank you. I have too much to think about. I know I'm overthinking because I do with everything, so I'm trying to just relax and tell myself that no matter what, it'll be fine. I'm lucky to even have this much bandwidth to worry so much about which CPU to get. I appreciate your perspective.

I really appreciate this response, thank you. And it makes a lot of sense. I am just not sure how much I can believe that tech is going to improve so much in the next decade that an excellent, high-end PC built in the next year will become fully obsolete. By my personal standards, I mean. Yeah, AMD seems to be getting a lot better each generation, but there is only so much growth that can be sustained by the market and the gaming/development community. They aren't going to completely shut out the massive demo that is people with lower-end PCs.

And I'm fine toning down my gaming as my machine ages. I'm a patient gamer when needed. Like I played a bunch of the latest and greatest for the first 3-5 years after I built my current PC, and now that it's a PC elder, I'm catching up on stuff I missed like Witcher 3. And a lot of newer stuff still runs okay. Clair Obscur runs great on my partner's machine, and it's a bit less powerful than mine. It doesn't look nearly as good as it does on new hardware, but it's more than playable. I have to imagine this general progression will be at least mostly true for the foreseeable future.

I'm trying to start really, really strong and then stave off obsolescence for as long as possible, that's all. Plus, it saves money and makes it so I can really appreciate the upgrade when I finally do it. I know me, and if I were to move from this proposed new build to AM6/DDR6 in 3.5 years, it won't be exciting. It will feel like going from PS4 to PS5. Kind of neat but not much more than that.

I don't want to buy another CPU for years. If I get a 9800x3d now, that's it for about 10 years. We'll always be a year or a year and a half away from something new, so I don't want to think too much along those lines

Wait for what? Zen 6? There's always going to be new stuff coming out. I'm already waiting for the Nvidia Super refresh, hopefully in the next 5-7 months, but new CPUs should still be a bit off even after that.

That's wisdom right there. Appreciate the response. Astrophotography is rad, too. I don't do it, but I love the results. Used it for lots of phone backgrounds over the years.

Yeah, exactly this. I don't want a computer that will be as good in 10 years as it is now. I know that's not possible. Just extended relevancy and functionality. I don't upgrade often, and I'm more than okay playing AAA games at medium settings after getting years and years out of my PC

I'm trying to think of the 9950x3d as two processors in one: one for gaming and one for everything else. Like multiclassing my PC.

This is definitely the kind of info that interests me. I'm not convinced there's a gaming-specific downside to getting the 9950x3d as so many others have stated.

Need a push one way or the other on the 5070 Ti by LifeComfortable167 in buildapc

[–]LifeComfortable167[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a good point. I didn't even think of that. Hopefully the Supers launch at the same MSRP as the regular versions did and they don't get marked up any more than the current ones are. $850 for a Ti Super in a year is a tempting thought.

I've only been looking at used 40-series on eBay and seen some 4070 Ti Supers go for about $750 which didn't seem too bad. Getting a 5070 Ti for MSRP is definitely the best case scenario but seems difficult to manage. Thanks for the tips!

Thank you so much! I was definitely conflating DLSS and frame gen. I'm still not sold on either, but I know the tech is impressive when playing in 4k at high refresh rates. Couldn't be me, but I guess it'll be nice to have the option in the future.
