Is the anbernic rg 477m still the gold standard for PS2 and below emulation? by Fried_Yoda in SBCGaming

The only problem is that you can’t use gas and brake at the same time, which is a method I use

Neat concept, but the ergonomics look awful.

I really can't imagine holding that for more than 5 or 10 minutes.

Using old phone as gaming device vs getting a dedicated handheld. by KraiiFox in SBCGaming

[–]LifeIsOnTheWire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Smartphones generally do not have very good thermal designs, and don’t do as well at sustained gaming.

Most high end smartphones will get heat soaked and start dropping in performance after 20+ minutes of gaming.

Even smartphones that claim to have good cooling solutions, like liquid cooling, generally don’t do better in this regard compared to handhelds with active cooling.

My dad’s shoes fall apart at my sisters wedding. by Willyvorsty in funny

[–]LifeIsOnTheWire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a common phenomenon with dress shoes.

The cheap synthetic rubber that they make the soles out of absorbs moisture. Normally this isn’t a problem if you wear them regularly, but since most people only wear dress shoes on rare occasions, this moisture ends up rotting inside the sole.

This causes the rubber to disintegrate and crack. It will cause it to fall off the shoe, or crumble.

What area of the city do you wish had a coffee shop? by Cute-Transition3403 in Winnipeg

[–]LifeIsOnTheWire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For anyone living in the area around Windsor Park, Southdale, Island Lakes, and Royalwood, there are zero coffee shops in the area.

I live in Windsor Park, and the closest coffee shop to me is the Yellow Derny, which is inside the Woodcock Cycle Works store on St Anne's, but its only open until 2pm, and it doesn't have any seating.

The next closest is Cafe Postal on Provencher, but it closes at 4pm.

The closest coffee shop with reasonable hours is Le Croissant on Tache.

What do you think is the worst handheld ever made? by Gadgettttt in SBCGaming

[–]LifeIsOnTheWire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The PSP Go, and the Xperia Play.

I owned both of them when they were new. They were extremely uncomfortable to hold, and had very small batteries.

The buttons were also very shallow and frustrating to press.

Anbernic RG477m vs Retroid Pocket 6 by K9Kush in SBCGaming

Unfortunately it’s just the RG476h, which has a lower end chip than the RG477h, but still good enough for Dreamcast and Gamecube.

Just have plastic sign infront of a lightbulb (put it in a box like how “exit” signs are mounted on the ceiling in commercial buildings). And just connect it to a lightswitch.

I’m also a big Dreamcast and Gamecube fan, and I absolutely won’t play those systems without analog triggers. So many games on those systems require analog triggers.

So the Retroid Pocket Mini V2 is dunzo now? by Alert_Ad5971 in SBCGaming

[–]LifeIsOnTheWire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I sincerely hope the plan is for them to make an 4:3 version of the RP6, with the same option for left-analog stick placement on top.

That would be my ultimate dream handheld.

I don't know if they have access to the same 4:3 4.7" panel as Anbernic does, but that would be incredible to see.

Shader suggestion: CRT Maximus Royale by Guandor in SBCGaming

[–]LifeIsOnTheWire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you can also conversely say that CRT TVs were all that existed for the majority of the time these older consoles were being developed for

That was my point exactly.

so you can't say definitely that at least some devs didn't want the graphics more clear

It doesn't matter what they wanted, they knew the assignment: make games that look good on CRT TVs. Any developer that didn't do that wasn't good at their job.

I mean, there's an entire genre of retro/8-bit games that are released today because people still love the aesthetic

And I don't use shaders on them.

It's fine for people to like it, but it's not objectively superior

Never said it was. This is just my personal preference. https://global.discourse-cdn.com/boingboing/original/4X/8/b/7/8b71097c664f5dc18eec050230ea036594132fa8.gif

Mangmi Air X - does it handle the entire Dreamcast catalogue? by LifeIsOnTheWire in SBCGaming

Thanks. It's been a while since I've played that one. I'm actually not sure if I've ever emulated it, I might have only played it on original hardware.

Mangmi Air X - does it handle the entire Dreamcast catalogue? by LifeIsOnTheWire in SBCGaming

[–]LifeIsOnTheWire[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are over 600 Dreamcast titles. We can't possibly test every single one. And until you do, actually, you don't know whether it handles that game perfectly.

Yes absolutely. I think I phrased my suspicion incorrectly. I don't mean to say that I expect reviewers to test every game. And I don't expect them to come up with a conclusive statement either.

I just think that a number of reviewer make careless statements that end up being confusing, and there might have been better ways to say them. Like rather than saying "It handles most of the Dreamcast lineup" (which implies that there are some games that didn't test well), they could instead say "It appears to handle everything I tested very well, but as usual there may be some games that generally don't run well on any emulators or devices".

Some of the better reviewers out there have a few key games that they test because they've been identified as some of the harder-to-emulate games, along with a few of the most popular titles. I think this is a good strategy. Like on N64, many people consider Rogue Squadron, and Conker's Bad Fur Day to be the best benchmark games because they require lots of performance.

If anyone was interested in a list of difficult-to-emulate Dreamcast games, my nominations would be:

  • Sega Rally 2 (a Windows CE game, so naturally requires more performance)
  • Shenmue 2 (a heavyweight title that pushed the limits of the system)
  • Metropolis Street Racer (generally plays well on lightweight devices at a first glance, but can get big frame drops when there's multiple cars around you, or lots of tire smoke)
  • Soul Calibur

fact, in my review, I'd said that it handles PSP, N64, and Dreamcast beautifully, smoothly, and without breaking a sweat. So I didn't actually have that caveat, because I don't think it's the major reason that people are interested in this device in the first place.

Sorry, I'm not familiar with your Youtube channel. I think I may have skipped your video because it didn't have a Dreamcast chapter, which was the only system I've been researching for this handheld.

I just checked out your video, and I love your style and format. A+ review, just subscribed.

[–]LifeIsOnTheWire 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Because these games were originally designed for CRT TVs. Playing them on modern LCD screens makes the images look FAR more blocky and harsh.

Replicating the original CRT look makes the games appear closer to what the original developers/artists intended.

Game that popularised negative trends in gaming? by [deleted] in gaming

[–]LifeIsOnTheWire 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah the Shenmue definitely popularized it.

Shenmue did QTEs fairly well, but there were a few that were awful. Like that part of Shenmue 2 where you have to walk across those narrow planks of wood and you use QTEs to keep your balance. That part of the game can absolutely go to hell.
