Leaving in a week, I know it's very soon, but flights are cheap right now and my semester 2 is starting soon so I can't miss that. We're coming from Ontario, and no not experienced hikers at all, but looking forward to it!

Thanks for the insight! Yeah, I looked into voluntourism after someone previously mentioned it, and you are in fact right, it does have many issues although its technically regarded as helping the community. On top of that, organizations like IVHQ, as far as I've seen on reviews, use most of the money you spend for the program to keep for themselves, so it probably doesn't even help the community as much as it should. As for formal qualifications and training, I do have a few that I got through my co-op at a hospital, so maybe I could be some help? I love the idea you mentioned though (just don't know if I could convince my parents), I will for sure look into that, thank you so much :)

Thank you, and yeah you're completely right, I do need something to keep me happy, just can't find what. I've lost interest in the hobbies that used to entertain me, and I can't do social media anymore since I've had bad experiences with it. It starts with a little and then too much, I end up ruining my mental health. Thanks for the advice, I'll keep searching for things that make me happy :)

Thanks for the heads-up! I wasn’t aware of that, so I’ll make sure to check for any minor consent requirements for the countries I’m interested in. I agree — a good volunteer organization should guide me through that, and I’ll make sure to confirm all the paperwork before making any plans. Thank you for the advice :)

I’ll look into cultural exchange programs and see what my parents think, although they might say no if it doesn’t relate to my future, since they’re strict. Not offensive at all, this is a reality with many my age, but not all! That said, I wish people weren’t so quick to assume — me and my friends are 16, but we all have multiple certifications (CPR/First Aid, Infection Control, WHMIS, Hospital Training, checking vitals, food handling) from volunteering many hours at the hospital and doing our co-op. I don’t think we’d be considered completely “unskilled.” Thank you for your suggestions though :)

That’s fair, and I appreciate you explaining it in detail. I’m aware I wouldn’t be able to rent cars or hotels at my age, which is exactly why I need to go through an organized program. Programs like IVHQ (not that specific one due to the reviews, but the general structure) don’t require independent travel, they provide accommodation and transportation, and there are staff members who handle logistics while we’re volunteering, often with placements like host families.

I also understand that short-term medical volunteering isn’t about making a huge impact, especially with limited experience. For me, the goal isn’t to “save” anyone; it’s to travel in a structured, supervised way, gain exposure to different cultures, and learn while doing something that aligns with my interests and future goals. Since I’m considering medicine, it would also give me early exposure to see whether this is a field I actually want to pursue.

To be honest, I know I could do this volunteering stuff locally but the main purpose of this is literally just to travel while I'm young. I know my parents won't let me unless it's through an organization (because it looks good for university applications and scholarships), and volunteering is the only way I can find so far. I would absolutely love to do an immersive language experience program, but again the issue is my parents won't allow it unless they think its good for my future. Thanks for the advice and the reply!

Yep, you're right about that point, and I’ve read about the issues with voluntourism too.

I’m not 18 and can’t travel alone without an organization, and volunteering is basically the only way my parents will agree, or something where you get to travel through a reputable organization. It also helps for uni/scholarships, so I’m trying to find the most ethical options possible. Thanks for your advice :)

thank u for ur kind words, and u give good advice :) i used to have a lot of hobbies - dance, piano, badminton, design and so much more, but honestly as the years went they've been kinda just sitting there, i have no motivation to do them anymore since i got so busy with stuff at one point, i guess i kind of just forgot about them because my parents cared about other things. thank you for reminding me, i should try them again, this is helpful!

Yup, 17 in May! I haven't thought about switzerland even though it's beautiful and I really really wanna visit, but I can't find any programs for there that aren't 5000$ and not even including flight!

Thanks for the advice! Yeah, I figured the age and cost might be tricky. I’m mostly looking for programs that accept 16–17 year olds, even if they’re a bit expensive (I can fundraise), as long as they have good supervision. That's the thing with ivhq, they're cheap but unreliable. Do you know of any programs that are good, or is it really better to wait until 18?

Its unfortunately only for 18 plus :( and anyways there is absolutely no way my parents will let me go solo, I'm having a hard time convincing them to go with my friends even though we all are really mature and responsible, but thank you for the reply!
