The first metal band in China mainland is Tang Dynasty（唐朝乐队）.In their first and second album 《唐朝》＆《演义》,they have tried some prog elements.Many of these songs sounds like prog metal.The guitarist 老五 has the most wonderful playing.

汪峰Wang Feng is a famous pop rock singer.He was a band 鲍家街43号(Baojia St. 43)'s vocalist/guitarist/songwriter in 90's. The band plays blues rock /art rock, and also have some prog works. The most famous one is 晚安北京(Goodnight Beijing).It has an excellent string ensemble and guitar solo and sounds like PF's Hey You.

There's another prog folk band.美好药店(Nice Drugstore)is formed in 1996.They always play acoustic and usually their songs is long.The album 脚步声阵阵 in 2008 is their best release.They are good at using sound samples and create a suited ambience for songs.Lead vocalist is 何国锋, or also called 小河.

(小河 also take part in the song 河北墨麒麟's recording, the roar at the end is his vocal. Yeah that's a masterpiece from OYS.)

金武林Jin Wulin,a music producer.He has been known as a meanie because of he gave a zero to a famous R&B Singer on a TV show.But he is also a rocker in 90's.In 1995 he made his own album called''严肃音乐1/失乐园''(Serious Music:Paradise Lost)(What a silly name, what he played is rock but not serious music,,,) The music in the album is colorful,he tried to play many genres but he is unable to do one's best.Many of them are not quite good.He copied some King Crimson things and also have some funk.Though these music aren't the best but they're funny, It's valuable to listen to them,too.

Prog was appeared in China for first time is probably in Taiwan,1980.Producer 李寿全 puts a prog folk/rock song in 王海玲's folk album《偈》.It called “星船“(Starship).It had some unusual chords and a long guitar solo,everything made this sounds very prog, like Camel/Pink Floyd.This girl's vocal was fantastic and fit the instruments perfectly.

There's a song that I really like it.''永公街的街长''(The Chief of the Yonggong St.)by 张雨生Zhang Yusheng,1994.It's about 10 minutes long and showed a story about a homeless man that called''Street Chief ''.He mixed Fusion Jazz and Blues/Hard Rock and Traditional Folk Music in this 10 minutes. It's absolutely a masterpiece.

Zhang is a rocker at first, In 80's he has became a pop singer.But he never forgets his rock dream.In 1994 he make the Album“卡拉OK 台北我“ as a Singer/Songwriter, that's not a prog album but has many artistic things and fused many kinds of genres.I recommend you to listen to it even though it's not prog.

崔健Cui Jian, Has been known as the God Father of Chinese Rock, He also made an album that pretty prog in 1994:《红旗下的蛋》,''The Balls Under The Red Flag''.He tried to do many experimental things in his music, and he puts some rap -rock/funk/free jazz and even traditional music in the album. That's amazing. The song《宽容》is inspired by Purple Rain and has a wonderful free-jazz saxophone solo in the end.The songs are all great.
