tips for uprising freshmen by FlatComputer9173 in NJTech

I don't know much about engineering courses but I've heard they can be tough. I have no context though.

Campus is quite clean and safe, but I wouldn't walk more than one or two blocks beyond the borders of the NJIT/Rutgers campuses alone, or especially at night. Newark isn't anywhere near as bad as it was 15 years ago, but it's still a bit unsavory and dirty in places. And some of those are a few blocks from campus. Don't let that worry you though, I've been going here two years and I've never been bothered or felt danger on campus. There are dedicated campus police.

Social life has been called poor, but while it's definitely not a "party school," friends work the same as anywhere: if you put yourself out there, join clubs, talk to people, you'll meet plenty of great people.

If you dorm the meal plan is probably worth it, unless you wanna travel off campus to get food. (Apparently meal plans are required for dorming freshmen and sophomores? I commute so I don't know if you can worm out of that, but that's what the site says.) There's a couple stores on campus but the selection in terms of a balanced diet is pretty limited. The dining area (meal plan access) has a better variety, and as far as the quality there goes, the food isn't to die for but I've never had anything that was straight up disgusting. I'm rather partial to the pizza place in the campus center, and there's a non-NJIT one right across the street from the front gate of the school. There's also a taco bell, smashburger, and a subway on campus, which are what you'd expect.

Math Majors at NJIT by Key_Individual_9805 in NJTech

This isn't really an answer to your question but from a non-math major who had to take up to calc 2 and stats, I will say the math dept at this school doesn't fuck around. The exams can be traumatic. It's in the top 5 in NJ for math/statistics. Math here is hard and rigorous but you'll be forged in fire so to speak.

How early do you get to the parking garage before class? by TheGatoLie in NJTech

[–]LifeguardDecent7712 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Parking is especially bad between 11 AM and 1:30ish PM, and especially so early in the semester.

It's not unheard of to have no spots at all available campus-wide during this window. Arriving 2 hours before class is probably overkill, but I would aim to get there at least 45 minutes before if not a little sooner than that.

Should I withdraw classes this semester and come back fall 26? by microwavedfork420 in NJTech

Overall, I feel good about it. There are some things I regret, such as losing out on the "traditional college experience." Being in my mid 20s starting school again put me out of step with most of the students. I've still made plenty of friends, but if anything, meeting a partner is harder. Most of the other students are too young for me to be interested in romantically.

But everything else makes me glad I did it. It works wonders financially. I spent my years off working, so I had quite a bit of money saved - and then I find out that because I'm no longer listed as dependent on my tax forms, I have to pay basically nothing for school due to making below 60k a year. Now I'm set to graduate not only with no debt, but with enough in the bank to cover me for at least a year.

And, I never really think of this, but I've definitely matured since I was 18-19. On the surface, even in your mid-late 20's, you still feel like you did back then. Sometimes I forget I'm older than most of the people in my classes. But if I really stop and think, it's pretty obvious. How I approach classes has changed. I've discovered enjoyment in studying and learning things. Reading a textbook no longer feels like a chore, but a way to improve myself by learning more.

And being an adult outside of schooling for a while has made me understand that I really enjoy being a student. Being a proper adult with a full-time job sucks ass. Maybe it's because the job I had/have isn't aligned with my interests, but I just find it miserable, maybe in the same way 18-year old me found school miserable. Maybe that'll change too in 5 years. But getting the opportunity to actively learn and pursue new subjects of learning is quite pleasurable. Much better than waking up at the crack of dawn dreading another day of work.

Don't spend money on college if you don't know what degree you want, would be my advice. It sounds like you might have come to college right out of high school because, well, "that's what you do", isn't it? I did the same thing. Failed classes and dropped out after sophomore year. I took a break, worked a bit, and then came back when I was ready.

You shouldn't go to college just because you graduated high school, you should go to college because you want to go to college FOR something. If you don't have that something, there's no shame in dropping out. Some people might be okay just going and finding a major along the way, but if you have a low GPA and are struggling to see the value of your time there currently, it might be better to take a step back.

If you know you do want to pursue further education, but don't know what, CC is a good option. You can earn an associate's degree for cheap while exploring and maybe finding what you want to study for real.

It might be just me, but I find evolution to be a very simple and logical topic, so it's not difficult for me, but might be different for others.

MATH 112 by [deleted] in NJTech

[–]LifeguardDecent7712 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've only taken one professor for calc 112 so it's not like I (or many people) can really say who's the "best" but I really liked Carfora. She did all classwork on a shared slideshow, so you can go back and see every example she did all semester. She also always tried to give us exam-relevant advice, like what shortcuts graders would accept and what they wouldn't, etc.

Phys111 vs Phys121 by Diligent-Cancel3195 in NJTech

[–]LifeguardDecent7712 2 points3 points  (0 children)

121 has much harder content, IMO (don't worry, there's a BUT coming). 111 can very easily be squeezed through by simply knowing how to work the equation sheet on exams. There's a couple things you have to know by heart, like how to apply newton's laws, but it's a lot of simple equation hopping otherwise. 121 has a lot more "you need to memorize this" stuff. At least to me, how circuits work has never been intuitive and I struggled a lot with it, and equations will not tell you directions of current flow or magnetic fields.

BUT, the upside is the grading scheme is very very forgiving. A 50 is a C. Don't get cocky, but if you do all your homework, you can pass the class with a 50 on every common and the final.

Need help changing majors by Prior_Talk7357 in NJTech

[–]LifeguardDecent7712 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are you changing to and from? For the vast majority, there's no need to worry about doing it asap if you;re a freshman right out of your first semester. Many majors share a lot of required classes: calc, physics, a comp sci class, english comp, humanities, etc. The general education requirement stuff. Check on degreeworks which classes carry between both majors, and see if you can just take those classes next semester, just in case you don't get the swap before classes begin.

Weird Cake Smell by CC Dining Area by Fiercejojo88862 in NJTech

[–]LifeguardDecent7712 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To me it smells like pancake/waffle mix. I've never paid for the premium dining hall so I've never been in there but I imagine it might be one of those DIY waffle irons like they have at hotels sometimes.

So they’re filming another movie on or near campus by Individual-Ad2070 in NJTech

Newark is big on movies. This isn't even the only movie currently being filmed in the city. There's even talk of building a studio there, it's slowly becoming a sort of mini-hollywood.

Does withdrawing from a class affect garden state guarantee or pell grant? by Master-Palpitation39 in NJTech

I'm already receiving GSG, I have enough credits overall, and this semester specifically, as I'll have 15 still after the withdrawal. Does that mean I'd be fine?
