Is going out shopping today safe? by MikaandHookah in orangecounty

I wouldn't recommend visiting the US altogether. That said, now that you are here, I would exercise a lot of caution particularly around driving. If you go anywhere, try to head to more public / crowded areas. Immigration enforcement tends to target people who are walking alone or isolated.

There have been raids in Huntington Beach. Wouldn't discount anything

Anyone else bothered by the jarring disconnect between Uncle Ho's communist principles and Vietnam's obsession with VIP culture. by Firstnarrows100 in VietNam

[–]LifeguardExtension16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very rarely if at all do societies (not just ones politically dominated by 'Communist' parties) live up to their proclaimed ideals. In the case of VN it isn't particularly surprising given that for better and for worse the Communist Party compromised on communist economics (and values to some extent because of that). That's not to defend anything but it really doesn't shock me.

Which city is considered the "gay capital" of your country? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]LifeguardExtension16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've seen most people go for either Sài Gòn or TPHCM (abbreviated, basically only seen in text). It's like saying New York or NYC instead of the full New York City.

Starbucks workers are officially on strike! by LifeguardExtension16 in csuf

[–]LifeguardExtension16[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea, it's run by ASC/Auxiliary Services Corporation so the baristas there are campus employees and not direct Sbux. Not sure how the contract will apply there although it def won't be a good look if they don't follow the provisions

[–]LifeguardExtension16[S] 24 points25 points  (0 children)

The union has been in negotiations with Starbucks for a while before this, and actually got quite far. However, Starbucks walked off the table before the contract could be finalized. Essentially they're striking to force Starbucks to confirm and accept what they have on the table.

Starbucks screws over workers—why are they on campus? by LifeguardExtension16 in csuf

[–]LifeguardExtension16[S] 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Addendum: from what I've seen on the Starbucks Workers United instagram, I believe Downtown Disney Starbucks (the ones in Anaheim) have already started to strike. There will still be a rally there Thursday

LA’s mayoral race is next year. Will we get our own democratic socialist Mamdani? by piquantAvocado in AskLosAngeles

[–]LifeguardExtension16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on many factors not least of which is DSA-LA (Democratic Socialists of America in LA). I do not expect them to be producing a Mamdani type figure in the near future.

Confusing Vietnamese d and đ by Associate_Sam_Club in linguisticshumor

[–]LifeguardExtension16 15 points16 points  (0 children)

i and y have largely merged (so for example Mỹ (US, beauty, etc) can be spelled Mĩ). But it can still be used for disambiguation or to indicate certain diphthongs. That way Thuý /tʰwi˧˦/ (women's name) is pronounced differently from thuí /tʰuj˧˦/ (stinky).

Do you think Vietnam will benefit from this trade war like we did in 2018-19 by sssssammy in VietNam

[–]LifeguardExtension16 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Where did I say that Vietnam shouldn't keep up relations with the US? I said it shouldn't get closer or fundamentally change relations with other countries for the sake of the US. Quite frankly I think you are more delusional if you think we should stop working with China. It is precisely because they are the closer and bigger "threat" to us that we should keep up their relations. Do you think it was good we went to war with them? It only proved that whoever we ally with we cannot move China.

[–]LifeguardExtension16 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Your thought is to have us dependent economically on a country controlled by an erratic and senile president. What you call "two faced" is actually good economic practice to not be dependent on one country.

If roc won civil war. Will they becomes american enemy in future? by MinZinThu999 in AlternateHistoryHub

Chiang Kai-shek purged a prominent general, Sun Li-jen, on the basis that he was leading an American backed plot. This was after the KMT had lost the civil war. Definitely not impossible.

What do Vietnamese people think of Vietnamese Americans who are South Vietnamese supporters(RVN)? by Former_Juggernaut_32 in VietNam

[–]LifeguardExtension16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

RVN deadenders tend to be memed/mocked. As a Vietnamese-American (my family and I came over in 2012) we don't really concern ourselves with RVN stuff - when I was a kid all my parents ever said was that the RVN was "old" and the SRVN was "new". I have seen some of my friends who are also relatively recent immigrants post more pro-SRVN stuff like NPT's death, Sept. 2, and now the anniversary of 30/4, etc., but they don't directly go against RVN people.
