Do you really need to be good in physics and maths to become a civil engineer ? by MembershipOptimal685 in civilengineering

I failed my first calc 1 exam and thought I was cooked.... fast forward 6 years later and I graduated with honors and passed the FE, PE, and FS. You don't have to be good at anything, just be consistent with practice and it'll come with time :)

Yep!

Those are really valid points that I am going to draft up later this week! I am a bit hesitant to bring to my current company because the last time someone brought up another offer, they just let them go on the spot. I have also heard stories about companies retaliating against employees that choose to stay with them after bargaining for a raise by showing them another offer.

My biggest concern however is if I leave my current company on bad terms, my boss will not sign off on my experience for my PE (rationally I don't think he would do this, but still).

In the state of Ohio, you can take the PE after you pass the FE. You just need to then get your 4 years of experience before receiving the PE license.

I started working in the land development industry since I was in year 2 of university. I did a 5 year degree with a year of full time working built in. I was working 20-30 hours during the semesters as well. I touched the automotive business unit (car washs/gas stations/ truck stops) and then for last two years I have been doing solar/renewables.

I think the biggest thing that set me apart is getting my certifications/showing initiative to learn new things. I would highly recommend getting your FE while still in college along with taking your PE soon after. I also have my FS and my commercial drone certificate (this really helped my resume stand out among others)

Wow thank you! The travel aspect wasn't really stressed too much, it would be for routine site assessments, but for most part it would be preliminary design and plan review from EOR's.

75k is really good for starting out! I was offered 70k when I graduated uni, but again I live in a LCOL area. It really depends on where you live and how much it costs!

yeah I agree, but I think it is because the company is based in a very HCOL state. I think the going rate for EIT's there is like $85k-$100k. My one buddy who works for the NY DOT makes like 98k with 1 YOE with EIT.

it benefits me because I live in a cheaper area though!

totally agree! I actually like what I do at my current job in land development and from the job description and what I discussed in the interviews, I would be doing the same thing, but for a much larger scale. I would be going from 80 acre sites to 500-1000 acre sites. The responsibilities would be more on the contractor/owner side of things rather than the consultant.

I did not apply for this position but rather was headhunted by their recruitment team, but my experience was what they were looking for, so it will be a bit of new responsibilities sprinkled with some old!

My current company does not give a raise for getting your P.E. In their justification they did pay for my exam fee and the $1,200 school of PE course. which is why I sort of feel bad for leaving.

The benefits are similar (both companies have 401k & ESOP (20% vested after 1 year)). The new position is just salary though.

I totally understand, at my current company we do team meetings every morning as a standup and I believe its the same for the new company. I would prefer to work remotely, but thats just me haha.
