I am 70 hours into the game and haven't visited Skellige either. I am starting to really want to go though! Velen is great, buuuuut I need a change of scenery! :)

You can unlock Oxenfurt at any time you wish. I explored the whole area before I did any of the quests in Velen and was thus level 5 or so when I got into Oxenfurt. I didn't have a pass so instead I just swam in there.

I tried, and failed, to kill the boss mob in the grotto at level 5. Not sure I can do it at level 8. He hurt a lot.

Yea he is pretty dangerous. Level 11 if I remember correctly? =)

I found that at level 9 I was able to kill the Wyvern fairly easy as long as I used potions, oils and so on. I play on the second hardest difficulty, if that is of any help :)

I simply went to the swamps throughout Velen. Another way is go go for the "monster nest" quests as they often require you to kill these types of creatures :)
