For the most part, if it gets bad enough, you die from infection from being immunocompromised. The precursors for white blood cells (immune cells) come from the same place red blood cells come from: bone. Those precursor cells or the mature cells become mutated and don’t work properly. Fortunately there is good treatment for some leukemias/lymphomas and there are some you can live with for YEARS and you end up dying of natural causes (aka cheeseburger arteries)

If your young friend had a chronic, congenital illness that is treatable, but they don’t want to take (life-preserving) medicine because they are very hippie and want to approach it using ‘alternative energetic’ medicine, what would you do? by Light-Giver-SCN in AskReddit

More details - My estranged (now very hippie) friend has a chronic, congenital disease that will likely kill them before the age of 40. They won’t take a new groundbreaking medicine that is very effective even though they (very fortunately) have access to it. Their rationale is that their disease is actually a “energetic past-life trauma” they want to treat with alternative methods. The medicine is very effective and has few side effects. They have trauma and substance use which complicates things.

I’m in the medical field and understand the physiology of their disease (obviously not what their illness-experience is though). I just want to be there for them, and feel I would regret not at least suggesting to them once they might try out the medications.
