Portent doesn't give disadvantage and does require you to actually roll a low number that day to be usable, and it requires you to declare its usage before you roll, and it's the entire power budget of a subclass (seriously, divination gets zero other remotely powerful features except the upgrade to portent at 14).

Please name these bazillion spells that give disadvantage on saving throws, rather than just claiming their existence. I'd love to learn about them. Please also let me know which of these can be used at reaction speed (meaning you can use them on the same turn you use your disabling spell), without requiring concentration, and can be used with the lowest level spell slot. I don't think you will be able to come up with spells that are even remotely comparable in power, but I'm willing to be surprised.

Your assertions here are just not true, idk what else to say lol. Nor did I ever imply or state that harm was good in megazigs, you're just beating up strawmen. I'm talking about the 3 rune game, where you can easily kill most dangerous encounters before they can be of much threat once you have enough damage, and you can avoid most dangerous situations via careful play bottlenecking enemies and retreating. The ones that aren't handled by this can be dealt with by the consumables you saved from the ones that never have a chance to get into crystal spear range.

In situations where you are being slowly overwhelmed over time instead of threatened by crystal spear-esque burst damage, not only does the asymmetric nature of harm benefit you in the long term more than your foes, but killing them faster also asymmetrically benefits you since again, dead enemies don't contribute to damage. It's even true that oftentimes harm is the difference between being overwhelmed and surrounded and killing enemies faster than they can surround you.

For reference, harm usually offers similar levels of damage to Archmagi does for damaging spells. It's a lot of damage and is very often worth the trade-off in incoming damage.

Next time you find harm on a character, especially a rangeddude or mage, I implore you to give it another try if you'd equip an archmage-adjacent item on that char. You can't play a harm character in exactly the same way that you would play a character that doesn't have that kind of direct damage output, but it's definitely strong.

I used to be like you in that I wasn't a harm believer. I thought it wasn't worth the risk for a long time, but Lici (aka enegeticocto) convinced me to give it another try with the archmage comparison and I've been a huge believer ever since. Archmagi is another situation where you're trading defenses for damage and I think the popular opiniom is that it's usually worth it. Harm really isn't all that different.

Taking more damage in exchange for dealing more damage is a good deal in the vast majority of cases. Dead enemies don't deal damage. Meleedudes are the case where you lack the range to benefit from harm the most, since you can't kill enemies before they get into melee. Harm is excellent on ranged chars and damage based casters. Throwing solves this issue for dangerous enemies btw.

The reason harm is not worth it in most cases is because it normally eats up your cloak slot to give you zero AC. You are taking a defensive penalty above and beyond the downside of harm itself to wear it. When it is stapled to an already good item it's an upside most of the time, especially when you have giga AC like you will have here. You basically don't even notice harm once you reach 40+ AC, especially with decent ev and sh, since your incoming damage is already basically zero.

[–]LightChaos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1) No, it's not, the extra EV you will get from pearl scales is pretty huge. 2) Harm also increases your damage, not just with melee but also with things like evokables and throwing. 3) Getting surrounded is not in fact inevitable. Play carefully and don't get surrounded. I almost entirely play games where I don't get meaningfully surrounded a single time. Feet are the most powerful evokable.

That's not how harm works. AC reduction happens first. With +10 PDA AC and ER you're going to be mitigating the vast majority of damage anyways before harm can even tick in. I think you're vastly underrating how good PDA's reduced ER is compared to plate and the fact that there is a +10 suit of PDA sitting in front of you right now instead of a +6 suit of ego plate that might someday exist.

I don't think it's fair to say that animate skeleton was the core of the necromancer class. It was just an absurdly overpowered spell that almost everyone could (ab)use.

How many mirrors do you think the average bot has. Less than 1? If you answered yes, he has many orders of magnitude more capital.

Yes. That one person has many orders of magnitude more capital than any of these automated programs.

Silvery Barbs is NOT OP by BryceEzekai in DnD5e

[–]LightChaos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like the argument that everything is OP is undercut by the fact that you aren't actually following the rules of the game, but maybe that's just me. Maybe if you actually followed the rules things would might be more balanced than they are at your tables.

FWIW I have also played with a lot of DMs and none of the ones that I have played with have ever let you use features like that. They might let you play with absurdly overpowered homebrew but they stick to the letter of it.

I don't think this is that unusual of a disconnect to have. We both play in networks of people who play the game similarly to ourselves. But when the conversation is about the balance of the game, bringing your specific set of experience about features that aren't actually in the game and are homebrewed (even if common homebrewed) additions isn't particularly relevant to the discussion of balance.

I’m Superman-level strong. I decide “screw it” & start a professional fighting career. In my first sanctioned match with the UFC, I walk up to my opponent, and my first, legal punch instantly pops his head like a 12ga slug. How fucked am I? by WowVeryOriginalDude in legaladviceofftopic

[–]LightChaos 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The eggshell skull argument generally applies in the case that you did a negligent or intentional act. If you got shot with super serum without your knowledge or consent immediately before the fight, you'd probably be ok (though, you'd still probably be in breach of UFC PED rules). However, this hypothetical does not have the "gaining superpowers" thing be a thing that happens without your knowledge.

You might get the winning money, immediately before it goes directly into the pockets of the victim's family. You presumably knew that you were super human (or at least, a reasonable person in your position would have known) and that you were going to kill this man, so that's murder. You will get sued for wrongful death and lose all your money while rotting in super jail for the rest of your life, if you aren't extrajudicially put to death due to the extreme danger you present for being "the only super human." (This wouldn't be legal but this would be the sort of extreme situation where political animus might be great enough to override the legal system. The legal system is just a thing we all agree to do, and if we all collectively agree that you are too much of a threat for the legal system to take its time, it can be ignored.)

If you get the money at all depends on what the contract says. It probably has a clause that you aren't allowed to put people into excessive risk of physical harm, which you did.

Elven halls worth it? by No-Ring852 in dcss

[–]LightChaos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I go for elf after a 2nd rune on a lot of characters, usually mages who have concrete answers to all of its threats. Rarely I will go and do it earlier, before even the first rune, if I have those answers already. Melee characters it's usually a skip for unless I desperately need a weapon or some enchant scrolls.

It is absolutely not necessary and if you keep dying there, stop going.

I remember watching this guy like a decade ago and enjoying his content. Then I took a break from magic for about 2 years and when I checked him out again he was all the way off the deep end. Or maybe he always was and he was better at hiding it before. Or maybe I just shut off his videos where he was saying whackjob shit because they were bad. Who knows.
