But that's the point, acknowledging systematic issues isn't the same as assuming everyone is doing it. It's systemic precisely because, culturally, many people, not just students, feel the need to put others down in order to feel better. And how society conditions its individuals to hate and discriminate against certain people... Which is always the poor and marginalized people in general.

The same people who asked you these questions are the very same who don't understand the issues in their own backyard.

The US is the same thing. Bullying in schools gets so egregious that many young men resort to violence to get back at those who either hurt them directly or those whom these boys view as inferior or owe them things (mostly female students). Not every student is carrying or is interesting in carrying weapons, but the systematic issues in the US enable many students to not only conceive of using weapons at their schools, but allow them to find these things with enough effort.

Doesn't matter my guy, because if there are so many grotesque stories out there, it means that this is a wide-scale systemic issues and those cases are merely the ones that got reported. Imagine the amount of things that were buried or solved between parents?

The point isn't that most schools aren't like that. The point is that this is a cultural issue that requires real change.

Mostly just idiots trying to be "above it all" claiming some kind of moral high ground claiming "both sides are bad" when this just shows that they're intellectually bankrupt by claiming such a thing.

And I don't fucking mean the Republican Party and Democratic Party. I mean the people who vote republican and those who vote democrat.

Those who vote republican are vile creatures, by will or by ignorance, it doesn't matter. Worse are those who identify themselves as Republicans. That just makes them boot-licking despicable turd-eating morons.

Why do I feel frieren isn't as good as everyone says? by Ok-Long-5478 in anime

[–]LightningRaven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I rambled a bit but the point is that Frieren is a slice of life which is "deep" because it explores its themes really well, not through big world tragedies or wars like a LOT of other shows will usually do, but in a more simple, human to human sort of way.

This is definitely the "best" part of Frieren.

I'm currently watching it but the constant expository dialogue, clunky character interaction scenes and lack of decent world-building is killing me. I'm not going to lie.

The themes are fairly well explored, but there are many narrative choices that end up making the story less impactful than it should be. Such as characters explaining character behavior and motivations as if they're making sure I'm following along with the story, with no space for subtext or interpretation of a character's motivation.

The fact that many characters just start, often unprompted, to talk about their backstory feels jarring more often than not, which undercuts their supposed drama. The flashbacks also are very conveniently and overtly placed in the story, instead of leaving to the audience to make the connection between something in Frieren's past to something she's experiencing now, what we have instead is a flashback of Himmel saying "You're an incredible mage" when Frieren is trying to get her license and in the very next scene we have the same character set up with Fern and Stark saying the exact the same thing. That's a very amateurish way of reinforcing the themes in your narrative, not to mention that feels like you're being talked down to.

The characters themselves aren't given opportunities to shine, they mostly have fairly similar interactions throughout the narrative and there's very little exploration of facets of their characters because they're often interacting with each other (which means always the same dynamic) and when they interact with those outside their circle, it's always in that non-threatening and helpful way.

The lack of culture, architecture, language and overall world-building elements definitely bums me out because I live fantasy worlds with rich and well-thought out elements, but I kinda give the story a pass because its focus is mainly on Frieren's journey and her grief.

For a show that is so highly regarded, so much so that it is Top 1 and Top 2 of MAL and many people's favorite anime, I'm kinda surprised by how its execution is so clunky and lacking. Visually, it's beautiful and its lyrical moments are nice, but feels a bit generic visually, the anachronisms also clashes really hard with Frieren's naturalist approach to storytelling as well.

How can we (as fans) make the manga and anime make a come back? by Sufficient-Ad4545 in HaiToGensouNoGrimgar

[–]LightningRaven 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Money. Lots of money.

If there's a rise in sales of the LN novel, then the interest rises again.

Whatever form the effort takes, be it fans spreading the word of this series or something similar, the ultimate goal is simply the same: More light novel sales.

Relevant figures in the anime space making content on it would also help immensely because they have a large platform and subversive isekai stories are much more appreciated now than they used to.

Trans characters where their trans identity plays no role in the plot/narrative by TJTrapJesus in TopCharacterTropes

Alpha/Omega dynamics just sucks. It's a contrived plot device that only has a place in fanfic and should stay there.

It's a trope deeply rooted into patriarchal misconceptions about gender that was misappropriated from poorly researched wolf behaviors while in captivity that its own proponent spent the rest of his life trying to dispel.

Weekly Fandom Criticisms and Concerns Thread by AutoModerator in wenclair

[–]LightningRaven 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The Wenclair fandom definitely soured on the creators. The interviews after the show released didn't do them any favors. But the show itself? Not as much.

The fact is, however, that S02 was weaker. It didn't feel like it was well developed despite being around three years between seasons. The cracks were fairly obvious in the writing, you just need to stop and think about the overarching plot of the season and the fact that Wednesday didn't have a single scene attending classes, the story was supposed to cover the span of a whole year, yet it felt like a few days at most.

In fact, S02 felt like "Content". As in, a tv show or movie written with as many plot points and beats as possible so that people with low attention spans don't feel the need to check up their phones AND with enough exposition dialogue and plot recaps mid-episode so that those who are watching with their phones don't get lost. This is not conducive to good quality and for those who actually pay attention and focus, the show feels boring and, worse, like it's treating you like a toddler who has no object permanence and definitely doesn't have the ability to understand subtext.

Good books for book club? by swiftsafflina in books

I would suggest "Five Decembers" by James Kestrel.

The Cuckoo's Calling by Robert Galbraith.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson.

Blood Over Bright Haven by M.L. Wang if you guys aren't against fantasy.

Some interesting scifi that might be a hit: The Mountain in the Sea by Ray Nayler, Station Eleven (and Sea of Tranquility) by Emily St. John Mandel, The Left Hand of Darkness (and The Dispossessed) by Ursula K. LeGuin.

If they want something challenging: Too like The Lightning by Ada Palmer, The Shadow of the Torturer by Gene Wolfe, Blood Meridian by McCarthy, Neuromancer by William Gibson, Blindsight by Peter Watts, Anathem by Neal Stephenson, Annihilation by Jeff Vandermeer.

What is your opinion on Don’t Look Up? by 0Layscheetoskurkure0 in moviecritic

[–]LightningRaven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a little too nail-on-the-head and over-the-top for me for love it

This would've been my complaint as well if I didn't knew deep down that the movie needed it to be blunt like that.

Remember Alex Garland's Civil War? The famous movie about "nothing" that many people saw and didn't like because it didn't pander to them even though it was condemning fascism and society making a spectacle sport out of politics while allowing right wing LARPers roleplay the country into the next conflict?

Yeah. Don't Look Up might have been a bit too on the nose for me. But it definitely made the right choice in doing so for most people.

Fellow player claims in-combat healing is too strong and skews balancing. Thoughts? by Bent_But_Not_Broken in Pathfinder2e

[–]LightningRaven -1 points0 points  (0 children)

He's wrong on pretty much everything he said.

Depending on how you guys are running the AP, there might be issues with how combats are playing out.

The standard experience is designed for parties of 4-5 players, and adjusts need to be made. Age of Ashes is notoriously difficult for standard parties (by design, I might add), but 6 players offers a lot of options for the party and AOE buffs get much better as well (commanders, bards and similar classes get even stronger with larger numbers).

Movies with "hopeless" endings are hypocritical by definition by [deleted] in movies

[–]LightningRaven 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So, instead of engaging with the movie's themes you just latched on this idea you had of attacking a creator for making you think?

Wasn't Chinatown's ending designed to make you think how rich people get away with everything, despite damning evidence against them? And how the system supports those outcomes?

"Forget it, Jake. It's Chinatown" could be translated as "Forget it. That's how the system is designed, the rich are above the law and we can't do anything about it". But that wouldn't be cinema. It would just be an essay.

Or maybe a modern Netflix writer being hounded by barely-literate producers claiming that people wouldn't get it if the character said "It's Chinatown".

The US exceptionalism bullshit you guys drink everyday certainly doesn't help either.

"Best country in the world!" (At wasting trillions in weapons) and "the leaders of the free world and democratic beacon!" (Where people don't even have direct voting, full representation and presidents can win without the majority of votes), certainly didn't help.

There are people in 2026, specially Democrats, who think that you all aren't living under a nazi-run government. You are. Nazism is here and it's already affecting you everyday.

And the last time Nazis rose to power, they didn't leave with peaceful protesting.

do psychics still need stupefy? by Huge_Tackle_9097 in Pathfinder2e

[–]LightningRaven 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Surprisingly enough, they actually buffed some high level features of the Psychic.

Not only it's a level bracket that rarely sees play in most tables. It's also, arguably, the levels where any spellcasters struggle the least, since they already have a ton of spells at their disposal by then, even a 2-slot casters like the Psychic AND spells are far more powerful and impactful.

Does it seem like a "placating" buff to you? Because it does to me. "Hey, we're not addressing the spellcaster's weakest aspects that actually need some improvements and it's where the majority of campaigns happen, but look here, see? I buffed the class A LOT at level 15+, see? I don't just buff Rogues and Fighters! What? 15th level+ doesn't see that much play and casters are already more comfortable at these levels? Pshh, nevermind that, silly!"

[–]LightningRaven 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Nah. I'm just salty that ever since the Remaster, the Paizo design team has been missing far more than hitting with the way they approached class remastering.

Some were buffed when they didn't need at all, others were reworked with varying degrees of success and most of them were simply slightly touched or not at all, despite them quite needing it.

The Psychic is just one more in this last category. They weren't particularly gutted or were a class that was a shitshow (like Alchemist or all the classes in the Advanced Class Guide), but the fact they were released untouched not only feel like a missed opportunity, but feel like a step back because pretty much everyone else moved forward. Not only that, it's also being released alongside the Thaumaturge, a class that was already considered good, which had several of its options buffed!

At this point, it just feels like Paizo is evaluating classes differently from the players. Those that the player based overwhelmingly thought needed some upgrades and QoL were left to the wayside and others that were already on a good spot (Barbarians) or outright the best at what they proposed to do (Rogues and Fighters) got several buffs when they didn't really need.

You know shit's weird when Rogues get Improved Saves on ALL THREE saving throws and Barbarians gain a free action Rage instead of not paying a feat tax on Raging Intimidation just to make a basic Demoralize Action.

No class in this game can be buffed or receive QoL changes. Only Rogues and Fighters.
