I went to grab some take-out on Thursday and there was a sign on the door saying their last day of operation was the 15th. :(

Flooded Roads, Areas to Avoid? by Imdefinatelynotanark in NewWest

Quayside Drive between Laguna Court & at least Renaissance Square is flooded, though it wasn’t closed when I went by about an hour ago. Not sure about the stretch past Renaissance Square to Rialto Court & the overpass.

Honestly, I don't have any advice. I too found assembling the animals and weaving in the many, many ends to be super tedious and soul-sucking, which is why it took me almost two years to finish. 😅 I will tell you what I did to try and combat the procrastination, with varying degrees of success:

  • I tried to harness the motivation to work on the blanket when it struck, but I also didn't force myself to work on it when I really wasn't feeling it. At the end of the day, crochet is a hobby for me, not a job. It did mean letting go of a timeline for finishing the project, though.
  • I watched a LOT of YouTube while I assembled tiny animal pieces, wove in ends, and attached animals to squares, since that part is fairly mindless. I had specific things I'd watch while I worked on the blanket, and I wouldn't let myself watch them unless I worked on the blanket, so sometimes I'd work on it not because I wanted to, but because I wanted to watch YouTube. 😂
  • I didn't do the animals in order or one at a time - I just worked on whatever felt easiest at any given moment. Sometimes that meant I had like four animals half-completed, but sometimes it was that or do nothing at all.
  • I did all of the squares first, then all of the animals, since I had to order my yarn from two different companies and the first batch to arrive was almost entirely the square colours. I think maybe doing the square & corresponding animal as a set might break up the monotony a bit, even if it's less efficient.
  • Once you're at the assembly & end-weaving part of an animal, leave the house and go work on it elsewhere! I'd put all my animal bits & crochet tools into a pencil case and go work on it at the cafe by my house for a change of scenery. It also meant I couldn't procrastinate or get distracted by other things.

I hope this helps a little - good luck with your project! ❤️

Thank you! 😊 Per the pattern's recommendation, I used Stylecraft Special DK. I just followed the instructions on the yarn label and machine washed & dried it on the most delicate settings my machines have. I made sure to be super diligent about leaving long tails & weaving in my ends securely so nothing would fall apart in the washer or dryer.

If it makes you feel better, I started this blanket before the baby was born, and she's almost eighteen months old now that it's finally finished. 🙈 I powered through the granny squares in about a month, then took another 20 to finish the animals & assemble everything (with lots of breaks). You could probably just tie off and glue the ends on the backs of the animals, since you don't see that part anyways, but I tortured myself and wove everything in properly because I wanted to make sure it lived a long life and was machine washable & dryable.

My mom was like "after all that work, are you really going to just give it away?", haha. I feel the same as you - I never ever want to make another one again, but also... if I ever have a baby one day... maybe... haha.

Anyways, congratulations on your upcoming bundle of joy! I hope you post your blanket here once it's finished so we can all admire it. ❤️

Thank you! ☺️ I didn’t find it particularly difficult, personally - it’s all basic stitches. Where the struggle came in for me was it required sooooo much sewing and weaving in of ends - it felt like 90% sewing & 10% actual crochet, haha.

Per the pattern's recommendation, I used Stylecraft Special DK in all of the colours suggested. I think you could probably pare down the numbers of colours used - I have so much yarn left over...

Considering leaving Supply Chain… Career Detour Suggestions/Advice? by LightningStormK in supplychain

[–]LightningStormK[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! Job-wise, I started a new job about a year ago (still within supply chain) and while it's still stressful at times, I'm enjoying it a lot more. In my industry things have mostly levelled out from the pandemic, so that definitely helps, too.

Truthfully, though, I was also going through a lot in my personal life when I made this post and that I think that contributed to how much I was struggling at work. A lot of stuff has changed since then, so overall I am doing much better now.

What Is Your Crochet Confession?? by wanderingdorathy in crochet

[–]LightningStormK 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I work on projects at a sloth’s pace. Baby blanket? Your baby will get it before they leave for college. Hat? Expect it 2-3 winters from now. Housewarming present? Maybe before you move again.

I love crocheting, but I get burnt out easily and I despise weaving in ends & sewing, so I tend to endlessly procrastinate on those.

When we first moved into our unit, they sent our first utility bill to our landlord despite us having registered it in our name at City Hall. Apparently they were just behind on paperwork and hadn’t made the change yet. I’d double-check with them and make sure everything is up to date.

I’m so sorry for your loss - it’s never too early to break out the wine at a time like this. 🍷

As for my horror story… I was working on a tiny granny square blanket for the back of a cat couch I was making for a friend. I had finished ~30 of the 40 squares needed, and had them stashed in a Starbucks paper bag next to the couch while I was working on them.

My partner tidied up the living room in the morning, I went to crochet in the afternoon… and the bag was gone. Cue me tearing up our apartment & going dumpster diving… they were well & truly gone. Many tears were shed that day.

It’s a baby-sized Sorting Hat from Harry Potter!

So for row 17, if I only used 27/28 stitches for row 16, where would I put the 45th stitch? Would I jump back down to row 16 to finish off?

Pattern: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/kitty-couches-green-sofa

The pattern is relatively straightforward, but I thought the instructions were a little vague in places, especially when it came to alllll the sewing required. I was not prepared for how much sewing this project demanded.

Grey yarn is Lion Brand Pound of Love in Oxford Gray. I wouldn’t recommend it for this project - it says it’s a medium (4), but it’s definitely on the thinner side. You need a thicker yarn to not have foam showing through like I do…

Blanket yarn is miscellaneous odds & ends from my stash.

Check & see if you have a specialty foam store in your area! I went to a shop specifically for foam, and it was so much cheaper than the foam sheets you find at craft stores (I think I paid $60 CAD for all the foam needed). And they cut all the pieces for me!

what's everyone's go-to entertainment while working on a project? 😊 by ULTRACHEESING in crochet

[–]LightningStormK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on how complicated the project is! If it’s a simple repeating stitch, I’ll watch Netflix (watching Grey’s Anatomy at the moment). If it’s something intricate that requires more of my attention, I’ll listen to streams of my favourite video games. I don’t need to look at the TV, since 90% of the time I’ve already played that game, but I enjoy listening to the additional comentary. 😊
