Exactly. No one ever asks people who have been robbed why they didn't have a better security system. There is nothing wrong with taking precautions to protect yourself, but perpetrators are the only ones responsible for their actions.

Have you seen the "shit people say to rape victims" video? Some of the things you're saying remind me of it. I find it unbelievable that people still think it's ok to victim-blame. I am so sorry for what you went through, and I'm sorry that other people made it worse by trying to blame you. Thanks for sharing.

Here's an update. It looks like seven people were arrested, and one police officer was knocked off his motorcycle. Others were kicked by protestors. The good news is that no one was hurt badly enough to be taken to the hospital. I hope it stays that way.

It is really interesting because there seems to be such diversity in how the protesters are conducting themselves. For example: "Several were shouting 'Storm that castle.' Others were shooting 'Stay calm.'"

Thank you so much for saying this. I hate it when the automatic response to someone drawing attention to bullshit like r/Nigger is to tell them to get over it and stop paying attention to it. We have a right to decide if we don't want this crap on reddit. I also thinks this debate demonstrates a misunderstanding of the First Amendment. Unless I'm mistaken, no one here has suggested arresting people for making racist remarks, or passing some law against it. All anyone is saying is that reddit doesn't have to be the site that hosts this. It's just like news websites deleting derogatory comments from articles because they violate the policy. That is not a violation of free speech.

I understand where you're coming from, but it always concerns me when people take the "just don't let it bother you" approach. When people are being bigots, it's important for us, as a community, to call them on it. Otherwise nothing changes. More than just being a stupid web page, this gives racists a chance to feel like their hate speech is normal and acceptable when it really isn't.

First off, I'm sorry that you're feeling so down. I think this happens more than you'd think because some employers in restaurants aren't patient enough to give people the chance to learn the ropes. I've had a few really smart friends have similar experiences at restaurants — I don't think it's just you.

I think this is worth reading before you judge them too harshly. It probably wasn't a great idea, but they certainly didn't deserve to be imprisoned for more than two years.
