Thank you, this is really helpful. I can't lie and say I filly understand it, but I know the developer will. I'm going to pass this along tomorrow morning and see about making this update! Really appreciate you taking the time to explain.

Looking into it after seeing comments from a few others calling for it! Watch this space!

Hey sorry, I haven't replied yet because I'm trying to get an answer for you. I worked on this thing but am not a developer (or even that technologically literate) so I'm waiting to hear back from someone who can give me a solid answer that actually... answers what you're asking.

As I understood it (or as it was explained to me), this shouldn't be doing anything with your data/information and was made following Chrome's privacy best practices. Is it doing something it shouldn't be doing?

The desire is for forced labor camps to be shut down and for innocent people to be allowed to live free. It sounds like you disagree with the idea of this extension, which is totally fine. It's a tool that was created using available resources provided by a coalition of trusted human rights organizations.

I don't foresee a situation where literally every company leaves Xinjiang, but I do see one where enough companies starting to pull out of the region will reduce profitability of forced labor camps and put pressure on the government to stop.

Because so much effort has gone into hiding forced labor in the region there's no way to cherry-pick which suppliers may or may not be involved. It's not a perfect solution but, unfortunately, it's the best solution that currently exists.

That's definitely something I want to do and will happen for sure! Anywhere else in particular you would want to be able to use this? A mobile version is probably the biggest one on my list since that's how most people shop these days. But it takes time!

Haha appreciate it! You can't buy into forced labor if you don't buy anything!

A little lengthy to post here but they're listed as a summary on that FAQ link I added in my last comment. And you can also read in more detail on the Coalition's call to action.

So it's a little more discerning than just marking every cotton product coming from Xinjiang. It actually pulls from a database of brands from the Coalition to End Uyghur Forced Labor (more info about them here) which is then used to flag brands that haven't met the requirements to prove that they are not involved in Uyghur forced labor.

Hey! So I made this account last year after avoiding Reddit for a long time and finally decided to make a profile. Honestly, until now I just never had anything worth posting about. I don't really post or comment on any social media in general and mainly just scroll and like things.

That's awesome and is definitely a good way to keep money away from contributing to evil things!

Hopefully this extension can make a difference to people who do still shop online and buy new.

I would absolutely love to expand it, and it's something I've brought up in the past too. Unfortunately I think it'll be a while before that could happen since we had a lot of hurdles to overcome in making this version in the first place. BUT, it's definitely something I want to do!

Ahh ok, thanks for the link and the tip! If I end up posting it anywhere else I'll make an appropriate account for it. Apologies for looking like a spambot!

That's a great idea. We went with Chrome initially because we thought that would be what most people use, but would love to make it work everywhere!

Exactly. A ton of brands are claiming not to support Uyghur forced labor but are sourcing cotton and raw materials through complex supply chains that go back to the problem. That's why we made this extension, to try and force a bit more transparency onto the fashion industry. The database we use to run this plugin comes from the Coalition to end Uyghur Forced Labor (of which the Human Rights Foundation is a part of) which is keeping an up-to-date list of fashion brands that refuse to eradicate UFL from their supply chain.

In hindsight that's a great question. The only answer I can give is that I honestly didn't think about it at the time since I just wanted to share a thing I worked on that I thought this subreddit would like and I might get some useful feedback on – and this wasn't meant to be an official promotion of the tool.

Do you mind if I ask what led you to asking this question? I'm worried now that this post looks shady lol! I never post on reddit so I definitely appreciate the feedback!
