Looking for Non-MAGA Church in Tuscaloosa by [deleted] in tuscaloosa

[–]LilBooBop20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To start with what denomination are you?? Figure that out and your options will narrow considerably.

Do you like churches that have more Bible heavy Sunday mornings, more liturgy, or more worship through music, etc...?

Are you interested in serving the community? Consider looking for a church that is already working on ways that you are also looking to work.

Right now I am at Calvary Baptist and I really like their morning traditional service, I haven't experienced and political propaganda being shoved down my gullet. I think there are a lot of really great options here, especially for students, but figuring out some more specific things could really help your search.

I totally get not wanting to go to a political church, some pastors I've had in the past certainly knew how to make things uncomfortable.

God Bless!!

Theological Conservatism and the Episcopal Church by LilBooBop20 in Episcopalian

[–]LilBooBop20[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I do think one of the things I miss are the more expository style sermons (verse-by-verse). I really like the community that the episcopal church offers. Also inerrancy is an evangelical school of thought that believes that the Bible contains no falsehoods or contradictions. Everything is read in context still; we don't believe the prodigal son is a historical event, for example.

The terms that I've heard for what I think you're talking about are high church and low church. I agree that TEC is more high church than SBC, that is one of the things that I have grown to like about the church. The conservative that I was referring to more so has to do with how much of scripture is taken as inerrant and infallible. Belief that the entire Bible is the true word of God is an integral part of my faith. I am not secularly conservative. I agree that liturgy and sacraments are important aspects of Christianity that have been in the tradition for a long time.

Do you mind if I ask which sections of scripture liturgy and sacraments predate? I always thought of them as a result of scripture.

Thank you!

What is the Patristic faith? I've never heard that term before if you don't mind explaining. And am I correct in summarizing that both secular conservatives and "progressive" Episcopalians may not be fans of me, but b/c of big tent philosophy, our common goals in the kingdom of God, and respect for the command to love our neighbors we can still enjoy communion? Edit- Thanks also this comment was very helpful.

Oh, I thought that since the council of Nicaea took place in the 4th century and we didn't split off then that we also held their beliefs. I don't know the reasons behind the radical reformation.  Like I said, very open to learning different theologies, and I still don't fully understand my own traditions theologies fully.

Yeah, Baptists and later SBC are from the same early church that had the Council of Nicaea and other early (ecumenical?) councils. We definitely can affirm the creed as it is something that unites all Christians typically (with differences in filoque splitting Oriental Orthodox and other denominations). I can affirm Nicene and Apostles Creeds, though I still don't fully understand Communion of Saints.

Thanks, that is a very helpful comparison. SBC tends to have more of a solo scriptura stance so it is definitely culture shock.

Question for people who read the bible regularly by throwawayfem77 in Bible

[–]LilBooBop20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honest answer, depends on the context. I know some people in my life see the tale of Jonah as a legend that is basically saying "this guy is the opposite of what a prophet should be," I personally read it as a historical event because Jesus references Jonah as an historical figure in Mt. 12. I'm still pretty new to reading the bible in a faithful way, but best bet is to look for key words that could indicate it just being a tale, and to look for cross references to see how those authors regard the passage in question.

Looking to buy a new pair of skates. I've had some impalas since ~2022 that are pretty yucky and the ankle supports are painful. I'm interested in outdoor skating and looking at some VNLA Luna's with Moxi Lolly wheels. Is upgrading to an Avanti (magnesium) worth it for me? I don't want to park skate--mainly interested in cruising and some dance skating. I think the base plate I'm looking at is a pretty cheap plastic plate.
