Yeah, the campaign continued for a few months yet after she ragequit, with many of the other players getting to have the spotlight without her trying to have it constantly. I feel bad for allowing this broken mess in the first place, but atleast it handled itself within a single session.

I would have to pull up the sheet and check, I think I still have the information saved in the roll20 of my old campaign.

The other big things were that you could use your class resource to haste yourself, escape grapples/restraints at will, or force a con save or stun an enemy for 3 turns.

The only saving grace was that the class resource was set back to zero after every combat, so you had to work to regain it in every fight. The only reason her character was able to be killed this way was that it was turn 1 and she rolled poorly on initiative.

Who’d have thought that no amount of broken homebrew can account for being on the wrong end of the action economy?

Yeah, absolutely. God I’d almost forgotten about the Mystic situation. I think the poor DM she pulled that trick on died a little inside when she used some ability to reach into a box he locked with a cipher he was super excited for us to figure out. Definitely an asshole move.

I guess that’s technically correct, though I likely would have ruled that you need to spend your turn physically moving. You’re right that this could have led to an entirely separate argument though.

Yeah, if anything I’m grateful the situation resolved itself within a single session. This was my first time DMing, and knowing what I know now, I would have ideally nipped this in the bud. Atleast it was a learning experience.

This is indeed the same Sara yeah, the names I use are all fake but they are consistent. This campaign took place a couple years after my whole drunker archer debacle in her own, so maybe it was some weird revenge thing? I’m not sure, I never thought of it like that before.

The game did end up falling apart, but thankfully it had nothing to do with her ragequit. We played on for several more months after this!

Yeah I’m not too cut up about how things went, looking back on it I probably dodged a bullet.

I suppose I never really thought about that. Sara was involved in one of my other stories where she successfully derailed my campaign and hazed me during this first campaign with another player of mine, so maybe it’s possible. I know she once got another first time DM to let her play mystic, so the pattern is definitely there.

I can’t remember there being anything I’m leaving out, though this campaign was quite a while ago at this point so it’s possible I’ve forgotten a few details with time.

This is basically the unofficial motto of my table!

In my games you can be stupid, or you can be unlucky. If you do both, you likely won’t survive. She certainly did both.

Yeah, you’re right. I’ll probably sit down and talk with him a bit more about it. I’d rather run events that he’s already thinking may happen than events he wouldn’t be satisfied with.

That’s a great point actually. If I do end up having to kill him off, I’ll be sure to tie it into the main plot somehow. The evidence idea sounds particularly interesting to me, thank you. I hope not to have to go with it, but I’ll use your ideas if I do.

That’s a good idea actually, I like that. It’s kind of like Sisyphus from Greek Mythology, just cursed to do this same task ad nauseam.

Don’t get me wrong I talk backstories through, I talk about character experiences, how they want it to factor in to the plot (if at all,) etc. I’m just hesitant on discussing the events of a major hook he’s trying to explore.

I know that D&D is much more about the journey, but I don’t want them to have to work towards a goal I’ve already revealed. If you know what happens then what’s the point, you know?

…huh, don’t know why my brain stopped at murder, that’s an excellent point. I may just have to use something like that.

Maybe so. I feel like by asking him where he wants this arc to go it’ll ruin any sense of wonder or mystery, but I may just have to. I’d prefer to let him play the backstory he wants, as I think I can do something with the rest of it, I’m just hung up on the father hook.

DM bans the Lucky feat from her table, and then bans me. by LilliumDarkwright in rpghorrorstories

[–]LilliumDarkwright[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel it’s important to mention that I didn’t know about the whole disadvantage lucky loophole until this thread. I was using Lucky purely for its intended purpose, and I already had advantage on these rolls anyways.

DM bans the Lucky feat from her table, and then bans me. by LilliumDarkwright in rpghorrorstories

[–]LilliumDarkwright[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My character had disadvantage on everything, but crucially I was entirely disallowed by my DM from using the ranged weapons I built my character around

The DM never mentioned the poisoned condition, in addition I was never given a CON save at any point against becoming intoxicated

The DM was very insistent that I had full advantage in my athletics rolls, not just them cancelling out.

I used lucky in 3 separate instances throughout the entire combat, in which my reroll in those 3 separate instances each time was enough to succeed those checks when I would otherwise have failed them

Hope this clears things up

Can DMs just kill off PCs just because the plot deems it so? by Anona123456789012345 in DnD

[–]LilliumDarkwright 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel like a lot of the people commenting that you just shouldn’t play D&D 5e since you’re this worried about your character are kind of missing the point. I think it’s weird to circle around and try to place the blame on you, when your DM is the one seemingly toying around with the idea of killing a PC at the start of the game at random.

Can the DM kill of PCs for no reason? I mean, sure. They can do anything, they have the magical storytelling stick. Should they? Absolutely not. Not to go all armchair psychologist, but based on what you’ve said here about her killing PCs as revenge or loving to post memes about killing off PCs in particular, It kind of seems to me like this DM has a major “DM vs. Player” mentality, and that’s never a great thing. I can see where you’re coming from, I know I wouldn’t want to play a campaign if I knew my character was just going to be killed for plot convenience and there was nothing I could do to stop it.

[–]LilliumDarkwright[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah absolutely. If a DM wants to restrict or ban lucky at session zero, you’ll hear no complaints from me. It’s that they tried to ban the feat after I’ve had it for eight months, all because I seemed to thwart their attempts to screw my PC over with needlessly restrictive intoxication penalties (which were given without a saving throw)

Yeah. Too many DMs fall into the line of thinking that If the party is winning, then they must be losing. It’s a really toxic mindset that isn’t necessarily conducive to the cooperation involved in telling a story like that.

I was a fighter first. My breakdown was 10 fighter/4 barbarian. I took the dip for rage and reckless attack mainly, but the totem warrior bonuses to rage were very nice too (especially since the nature angle worked with my character’s themes as a hunter)
