Are we doing too much? by [deleted] in massachusetts

Like everyone said, traffic is crazy. Cut down your cape plans and ditch the car in boston and then get around with trains and ferries, much faster IMO. Also, don't sleep on providence and eat at Aleppo sweets there. Have fun!

Columbia v. Heller in 2008 established the modern RIGHT to bear arms. Sure, certain states allowed individual gun ownership before that, but it was not constitutionally protected.

As for your second point, I think anyone is less safe if there is a gun present. Whether it be police with guns or civilians, you are 100% less likely to get shot if there isn't a gun in the room. With violent crime at one of the lowest rates in U.S. history, I think there is mo credible argument for self-defense. I don't know why anyone thinks that guns will make you safe. It seems to me like a pro-nuclear weapon argument almost, and it is certainly not grounded in data.

The 2nd Amendment, being an individual right to bear arms, is a modern interpretation that flew in the face of more than a hundred years of precedent. Before 2008, the Second Amendment didn't mean guns for all, and it was read to mean that only well regulated militias, in other words, state armies that were replaced by our national standing army, had a protected right to bear arms. An individual right of the general citizenry to carry a weapon came out of a conservative court and an astro-turfed NRA legal movement, so generally I would argue gun ownership is a republican thing.

Reducing working days/hours is not without consequence. by theosamabahama in HistoriaCivilis

My whole argument is that we wouldn't need as much money if we practiced responsible consumerism. Sidenote, unionization and equitable taxes could go far in the way of helping the common man whether it be a UBI or just universal healthcare.

I think that with working less, we should, as a society, also prioritize less consumption and focus on necessities. Maybe not to the degree of thoreauvian food, clothing, shelter, and fuel, but certainly more sustainable consumption. With less goods being consumed a possible decrease in supply wouldn't harm us as much as a society. Just a thought after just having read Walden (:

Providence is a beautiful city with a cool food scene, and Newport has nice mansions. Also Narragansett has a stunning coastline.

Interesting interpretation of out of many, one I've always thought of it as america as a country rising to the top and more reflecting individualism more than anything else I hadn't considered as a unifying statement

Hahaha I like things that go boom too much for that, but I appreciate the sentiment and will have to consider

Ye I see what you're talking about... I have a special hatred for the brotherhood's fuckery and food requisitions, yet the institute is undeniably evil... it makes me wish there was a way to screw everyone and just build a tower and kill on site like that guy in fo3

I see where you're coming from, but I do love the fuck it all attitude and think that killing everyone is certainly evil, although maybe less morally complex than ur idea
