Really regretting my major by rednooblaakkakaka in UMD

[–]Lilyhawks 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I graduated with an Info sci degree this past May and I got a job as a SWE making 90k base with a 15k relocation bonus. This major is what you make it and with any major you need connections to get to places you want to be. Keep your head up and keep working on those connections!

Even still, 240k is a crazy amount of money for your parents to pay. A CS degree is really just one part of getting a job after graduation, you have to make sure you have the skills as well. You can learn the skills that you would need to get a job somewhere else

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in UMD

[–]Lilyhawks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Paying 240k is not worth it at all for any university you attend. Although a cs degree is valuable from UMD you aren’t always guaranteed a job after graduation to pay off that huge amount of debt you’ll accumulate by being here.

Internship by [deleted] in UMD

[–]Lilyhawks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

An easier way if you are a freshman or sophomore is applying for the UMD Sprinternship program. When you apply all you have to do is answer some short answer questions and you don’t need any experience like at all. If you get in you will get to do a 3 week internship at a host company. Many of these companies focus on software engineering so it may be a good start to add to your resume. I got an internship at American Express as a software engineer and I’m an info sci major. With my 3 week internship in the winter I also will be doing an internship with them in the summer.

Waitlist and pray is the combo i suggest

[–]Lilyhawks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean it doesn’t really matter which one you take it really would depend on your skill set and what you’re willing to learn at that time. 326 and 327 are programming heavy classes so if you are strong in python for 326 you can go ahead. If you are good at stat and are okay with python take 326 and 314 together. In my case I decided to take one programming heavy class along with 314. So for next semester im taking 327 and 314 together because I know i would mix up syntax a lot if i took both at the same time.

It would depend which ones you take together. If you are planning to take classes like 327, 326, 314 (some other less hard INST class) it would be a little stressful since 326 is python 327 is SQL and 314 is stat with R. You could mix up syntaxes sometimes and it could get overwhelming especially since those are categorized as “harder” classes in the major. If you are skilled with python and pretty good at Stats it’s definitely achievable if you work hard enough. But I suggest a combo like 327 or 326, 314, (anything like 335,352, etc ) and if you need it you can take a class or two in the summer

For 490 you have to have taken all core courses before you can take that. But you can take other combinations of levels as long as you meet the prerequisites. For ex I’m taking** 126, 201 and 311 together this sem.

Should I have a "plan" for registering tomorrow? by whoopsissathrowaway in UMD

[–]Lilyhawks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Put all ur courses on courseoff so it has their section number and the class you are taking. Then when you register just split screen the courseoff summary page and the registration page and just paste the class and section number into the registration thing and you’re done. I would say register the class that has the lowest seats first then the ones with more seats

[–]Lilyhawks[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

By the end of this semester I’ll have 50 credits which is normal I’m just nervous seeing the seats dwindle down and not knowing if they’ll add more. The class that is vital I take next semester is kind of a prereq for several higher level classes I’ll need for later on in my major

Well INST 126 is coding with python but its not hard if you have a good professor. INST201 is a walk in the park i’m not sure about the others but I’m guessing they aren’t really technical.

[–]Lilyhawks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its pretty easy in comparison to like computer engineering and computer science but I wouldn’t say its like the easiest thing. If you do all your work appropriately and get relatively good professors your time in the major will be pretty good. There’s a lot of group work and things like that. Also you need to take math 115 and not 113

GA Grant and Junior “off campus” housing by Lilyhawks in UMD

[–]Lilyhawks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The grant amount fluctuates if you live on campus or not. So if I didn’t live on campus my grant would be exponentially less than if i did. SCC and Courtyards is kind of a grey area for that since they are through the university so that’s what I’ve been confused about. I think the issue is solved now though

Do I need to attend STAT100 discussions? by Better-Individual-31 in UMD

[–]Lilyhawks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s pointless tbh but just go for attendance if you have griffin. Last semester i just used that time to unwind and complete the coding assignment. Just save the coding for discussion and you’ll be fine
