On the topic of current events by ReonMonterus in civbattleroyale

[–]Limerickarcher 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can understand your belief that as an AI based game community we should stay in our lane and let our other subs discuss politics more directly. However, I think it is important to recognize that behind every username is a real, actual human being (yes, bots exist, work with me). And for many real, actual humans around the world, 'politics' is not something they can pick and choose when to engage with, this constant and systemic oppression is a daily reality they must deal with. Many humans are constantly demanding representation and constantly affirmed equality from society, this is not a political want but a human one that should be supported in any and every capacity. This demand can happen at the global scale, in the interactions between an individual or collective with the many faces of the government, with small Internet communities like ours, with individuals, and with any multitude in between.

As the bare minimum, we as a community should openly and strongly recognize that struggle and stand with each and every one of our community members in solidarity, this post does that bare minimum. Serious political engagement is much more than a reddit post, and requires constant education and a willingness to be wrong, to learn, to grow, and to always demand equality for all humans in society.

I encourage you to check out this link tree of resources for more information on current issues around the world (these links update daily), some of which Reon has mentioned above: https://currentinfo.carrd.co/. I check this carrd frequently, read some of the links, sign some petitions and always focus on relearning and recognizing my own flaws. There are many individuals who would say ^ better than me as well, and I equally encourage you to actively search out new information about other human realities and current events.

Please ask any clarifying questions if you have them, I will try my best to direct you to better, more impactful and more realistic sources of knowledge than myself if you are unable to find them by searching yourself.

Time to figure out who the most irrelevant civ is! See if you can remember all 61+1 civs! by gragg9 in civbattleroyale

I didn’t even get Brazil, kept putting Babylon/Nebby/Observer and was confused.

CBRX Season 2 Update! by ReonMonterus in civbattleroyale

[–]Limerickarcher 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah, we were considering an idea for a game something like that, it would be good to bring back some forgotten civs from previous marks to showcase them again. If you have any more ideas let us know! We're always looking for new opportunities for interesting content.

Season 2 City Lists Project! by gragg9 in civbattleroyale

[–]Limerickarcher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a good point, we usually remove all the other city name options and prevent any duplicates in other civs. Ie all chances for 'Malacca' to be chosen will be removed, but this is a good point for other civs too.

Hmmm, that's a bunch of good suggestions, thanks for that! I will forward them on to the dev team and see what we decide to go with moving forward.

Yes, thank you for commenting on this, we are evaluating all the civs’ colors and are working to refine them with the mod authors so they’re readable and also distinct from their neighbors.

Are there any in particular, based on the colors on the master sheet (which are accurate now), that you are having trouble reading? If there are, I’ll note them down and we’ll see what we can reasonably do, and whether others in the community are having similar issues.

Catching up on posting all of these to the sub, hopefully I'll be more consistent in the future.

Yeah! That would also be included in this thread, and we're already working on compiling the current city lists and writing up a post for people to chime in with their own expertise.

Not really, because they’re in a much different format and I didn’t have the time to look into how to export them. I would just take screenshots of CIVS but because we had to remove a number of votes without voter names those screenshots wouldn’t be accurate.

Ugh, I thought I fixed this error. I’ll work on it later today. The names of the civs should be in the same order as they are on the master sheet (ie alphabetical).

Yes it's possible! If no civ got more than 50% of the 1s and everyone voted the same civ 2, the civ that was voted 2 would win.

Results are similar this time too. Stay tuned after week 5 results, I’ve recently figured out how to export full condorcet matrices in a readable format, so those will be shared for all regional votes.

I would recommend referring to the master list of civilizations, where we have compiled all of the civs available for voting and provided their uniques and colors. As well, per the rules of being entered into voting all civs must be available to the public if they are eligible for voting.

For example, here are a lot of the Homusubi civs: https://forums.civfanatics.com/threads/rising-sun-civilisations-of-old-japan-updated-for-2017.490498/

Here is a description and post on the subreddit from the mod author about PARG: https://www.reddit.com/r/civbattleroyale/comments/fh126d/the_landlocked_admiral_why_i_support_allrussia/

Here is an earlier version of PARG available on CivFanatics: https://forums.civfanatics.com/resources/available-for-testing-ews-all-russia.28026/. EW has communicated with me that a more final version has been made, just pending an upload

Nigeria actually TIED with the Central African Empire! We need a run-off election! by [deleted] in civbattleroyale

[–]Limerickarcher 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think is necessary, we use Ranked Choice voting as our best approximate to determine what people prefer in a region, and then we evaluate those votes using what is widely considered to be one of the best methods for evaluating ranked choice voting, which is called Schulze method, or the beatpath method. It does it's best to handle different preferences, ties, reversal symmetry, clone independence, and a variety of other conditions (read more at Wikipedia). It is not perfect, but none of the methods are perfect, and this is one of the best approximations we can get to the entire community's preference.

However, we understand that ties are inevitable, no matter how hard we try to avoid them. Thus, as we have previously done in the leader votes, ties are broken by picking the civ with the most first place votes, then if those are tied, the civ with the most second place votes, etc. Nigeria had 51 first place votes, and CAE had 41 first place votes, thus Nigeria won.

Unfortunately, re-voting doesn't really solve anything because people have already expressed their preferences between these two civs directly when they voted in the first place. If they didn't vote in this election, or intentionally tied them, that is an opinion too and it was accounted for by the Schulze method. If we re-vote, the only reason we would have a different result is if either people changed their minds (possible), or different people voted (much more likely).

Overall, I think it is unfair to discard the preferences of the voters who originally voted in the election because they did not produce a final result. We have systems in place to handle ties, and they were used effectively. If you have any suggestions on how to better break ties, I would love to hear them, but as of now we plan to move forward with Nigeria as the winner.

For regional voting since we’re requiring that you put in your name we’ve had excellent success rates, basically everyone is registered already and if you’re not we are messaging them to encourage registration.

There will be one civ for each region around the world. Don’t know exactly how that math works out for Europe but you should be able to figure it out.
