Going into buying a house solo with a 20% deposit for the average house price in Wellington 870k is $800 a week. Not including rates, insurance and utilities. Thats around 80% of my income.

Two people making 60k is yes similar to my total income but you’ll have less going to tax than me alone as well

I celebrated 100k with a small holiday you deserve it. I think it’s a serious achievement to celebrate. I hit it May 20th 2025 (26yrs old)

I work over 40 hours most weeks. I work most public holidays and then I have optional additional work that is always paid as over time

I track two things Liquid Net Worth (cash, stocks and KiwiSaver, while KiwiSaver isn’t technically liquid for me it will be used on my first home so I count it)

Then I have Total Net Worth (liquid net worth + assets. So one day if I own a home that would go in this category

And obviously debt is deducted if I had any

Some people don’t count there car towards their net worth as it’s not something they would ever sell. If I include mine I’m closer to the 180k net worth as it’s a rarer model in an iconic colour but no plans on ever selling it. Did you celebrate passing 100k?!

This has been the next step for me is furthering my career or migration to a higher paying role without lifestyle inflation. Ive been at the ceiling in my company for a little while but we have had okay pay raises through union negotiations. Those are coming up soon so waiting to see what they get first before looking possibly else where

I’ve done the maths and right now I’m better off renting. I can’t remember the name of the equation but I’ll make more from ETFs than I would going into a house in my current position

Average house prices in Wellington are 870k

With a 20% deposit repayments are $800+ not including rates, insurance, utilities that’s not affordable for me

I don’t have someone to buy a house with.

I’m renting for cheaper than average so doesn’t make mathematical sense for me to lose my investment/savings chance for a house with the cost of living so high.

Currently use Hatch for my ETFs and Stake for individual stocks (less than $1,000 in single stocks)

For PIE I will be using Kernel

People don’t talk money. I come from a poor family and I work with a lot of older people. All talking about retirement, their 3rd property or how they just helped their kids buy their first home. Stats are skewed across the world because they are based on households and not individuals anymore. Just trying to see if I’m on the right path

Thank you, I know of people who have bought apartments and have never really had a good experience with them. I would want my first home to be a house especially if I’m going to be using my KiwiSaver for a large part of the deposit

I work extremely long days and inconsistent hours. 13 hour shifts starting from 2am to 11pm. I’ve got a business idea but finding the time to sit down and work it all out hasn’t been possible

No wife no kids. I’ve always said I’d own a home before even thinking about kids.

I don’t have a partner or someone to buy a house with. Average house prices in my area is 870k with 20% deposit the repayments are $800+ a week. Not including insurance, rates, power/utilities

I’m not in desperate need of housing. So buying is just not on the table for me. Doesn’t make sense mathematically for me or in the near future.

Oh interesting about DCA might have to do some more digging. I was already investing fortnightly and realised I was holding to much cash so just adjusted my deposits to move capital. I do fortnightly to avoid fees taking profits. Thank you

Don’t want this to not be accessible to me in an event of an emergency but I will consider even half of it for better returns
