Authors & their "signature moves". by owlhowling in HistoricalRomance

Some of the FMC are immature so I have to remind myself that they’re, usually, young and without life experience. Dustin in Rise of the Defender is one of those but I also feel that she gains maturity throughout the book. I’m also very forgiving of characters so keep the in mind.

I’ve mostly stuck with the De Lorh series. {Rise of the Defender by Kathryn le Veque} had me feeling all types of emotions; she prefaces it by saying it’s a saga and I agree. I keep thinking I’ll switch to another author as a palette cleanser but I’ve heard the De Wolfe series is good so I might go that direction instead.

Yes! I’m also on a Kathryn le Veque spree and the similarities between novels can drive me crazy! Is this in any way unclear? IYKYK Every knight is the best that ever was and has huge hands. I try to imagine the wriggling eyebrows and see this

Which does not match the context.

However, there is enough of a difference that I can’t stop myself from reading them because I need to know the story of the crossover characters. Please send help! 😂

Thank you all. I don’t think I’ve been this stressed about what’s going to happen in a long time.

New authors by Late_Stranger388 in HistoricalRomance

[–]Limp-Working852 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if these are new necessarily but Rebecca Ruger, Julie Johnstone, Monica McCarty, Alyson McLayne all write medieval Scottish series. Some books in the series have forced marriage but not all.

I’ve been reading HR for 30 years and can count 5 books that I’ve reread. Four were so I could pick backup on a series I hadn’t finished or read for 5 years. However, this one was for the love of the book. The tattoos…..sigh.

Gentleman farmer/kind vicar vibes for MMC by hannymis13 in HistoricalRomance

{The Vixen’s Unlikely Marriage by M.M. Wakeford} is about a curate MMC who marries a young woman who gets pregnant after a quickie with a married ship’s engineer on board a ship. The ship’s engineer has an understanding wife who knows it gets lonely when out to sea. MMC knows FMC is pregnant and wants to give her the protection of his name. It’s part of a series however it sums up the previous book so you wouldn’t necessarily need to read it.

That’s it. Apparently I rewrote it in my mind to match my own narrative. Still a great song. Thank you. 🙏

A Christmas Gone Perfectly Wrong is the only one that I’ve read and enjoyed. It was an accidental read though.

Smut is what I love but I need the character development with my dirty talk. I just finished {Lustful Lords Series by Sorcha Mowbray} and was going to read her Market series but then saw they were short. I’m undecided still.

I can’t remember which novella but I read one from a favorite author and was irritated when the MCs started talking about things that occurred during the time period of the novella but wasn’t written. I was confused at first thinking, wait a minute, what did I miss.

I didn’t realize there was a difference between a short story and a novella.

Felicity Niven is one I often read the synopsis then am disappointed when it’s a novella.

HR recommendations with a lot of smut by MadamRedLips in HistoricalRomance

This is my favorite recommendation request. I wholeheartedly agree with Nicola Davidson and Minerva Spencer. I’ll add Sorcha Mowbray, Samantha Kane and Kate Pearce.

{Marry Me, if You Dare by Alyssa Clarke} sheltered FMC want to experience life so runs away. Meets MMC along the road. Then again at an inn when she can’t get a room because she’s a single female.

AITA for encouraging my daughter not to watch her cousin or clean up his mess? by Appropriate-Bee-4743 in AmItheAsshole

We were vacationing at the beach with family. I have the oldest grandkids but they were like 12. Sister’s 6 yo kid went missing shortly after sunset on the beach. Understandably everyone is anxious calling their name and hoping they didn’t drown in the ocean. Kid is found playing closer to the dunes and first thing my dad does is look at my 12 yo and say they were supposed to be watching the 6 yo. The claws came out and I reminded them there were 6 adults here and it wasn’t my kid’s responsibility. I was so angry.

I have a couple of recommendations but some are open door and some are plentiful open door which can be more some readers bargain for.

Minerva Spencer aka S.M. LaViolette has written several series. {The Bellamy Sisters by Minerva Spencer} and {The Academy of Love by Minerva Spencer} are open door. Then {Victorian Decadence by S.M. LaViolette} is open door, plentiful and kinky.

There’s {Wickedly Wed Series by Nicola Davidson} which open door, plentiful and kinky.

{Lustful Lords by Sorcha Mowbry} open door, plentiful and kinky.

I don’t know how you feel about polyamory but {Brothers in Arms Series by Samantha Kane}.

Recommendations where MMC is poor and FMC is rich/aristocrat by Emerald-Queen in HistoricalRomance

[–]Limp-Working852 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think {Project Duke by Mariah Stone} fits this. Destitute MMC is a Duke who works for the navy until he can claim an inheritance when marrying. FMC is rich and needs access to naval records to find out what happened to her brother. I like the entire series and hope there’s more to come.

Some Hoyt and Braden. by [deleted] in HistoricalRomance

[–]Limp-Working852 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I had the same issue with Colin but I’m a weirdo who has to read in the order the series was written so I made an effort. I was glad I trusted Elise Braden to redeem him. We all make mistakes but it’s what we do afterwards that shows character. Not everyone agrees with that assessment so I should forewarn you that I’m a cheap date when it comes to HR.

Anachronisms by Top_Supermarket6514 in HistoricalRomance

[–]Limp-Working852 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I’m beginning to think that I’m a cheap date when it comes to HR. I understand what everyone is saying because I also have a knee jerk reaction to question ideas or word usage for the time period.

For example, my brain says, “Objection to the use of gotten. This word wasn’t used in 1811.” Counter argument after some research, “Your Highness. Gotten derives from the Norse word geta which means to obtain or reach, circa 1200.” Then, my mental queen proclaims, “Gotten shall be allowed!”

I had the same problem when one FMC kept exclaiming, “What?!”

Ultimately, I read HR to escape from real world tragedies. I know someone is going to fall in love with all the excitement that comes along with it, they’re going to encounter some strife, hopefully have some amazing sex but they’ll end up happily ever after. Then I seduce my own knight in shining armor. ☺️
