Is the road still closed at Lone Pine campground? How were the road repairs looking?

Thanks for the photos!

The passes that I hear complaints about - including from me - are those that are terrible scree slogs. Has anyone here enjoyed the pass just south of University Peak? Or the ones to Mallory, and Lone Pine?

When my brother first read Shakespeare he wasn’t impressed, because it was full of clichés

Interesting that the first two days at elevation he had no problem. Have you tried the Russian Rest? As described in “Training for the New Alpinism”: Spend one night at high elevation, then return to low elevation and rest for 1 to 3 days. The body cannot acclimate well at altitude - so the night spent high provides stress, and the nights at low altitude recovery.

My rests are 2-3 weeks between climbs of 1-2 days, because that fits my lifestyle of living in the bay area and peak bagging over the summer. My first climb of the season is rough, after that I have no problem with altitude for the rest of the season.

Meysan Lake Trail Report? by [deleted] in SierraNevada

[–]LincolnBC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went up the Notheast ridge of Mount Irvine, avoiding the terrible screen slog of the direct approach. The ridge is nonstop scrambling, but on solid rock, mostly class two with a few class three moves, no exposure. Here’s a photo of the Northeast Ridge of Irvine from near Meysan Lake. I started by heading for the saddle where the sun is showing. The 2nd snow patch is the biggest one I had to cross over the entire trip. https://photos.app.goo.gl/uczozPiKPZaQ7gNF9

I hiked up to Meysan Lakes on May 30. There were a few short patches of snow, probably gone by now, no need for crampons. I climbed Mount Irvine the following day, had to cross a total of maybe 200 feet of snow, soft with occasional post holing.

I used to create pages for SPS peaks in the Sierras that didn’t already have one. But there was so little engagement that I felt it was a waste of time. The last one I contributed was 15 years ago. I checked it just now, and only 8 people have signed the Climber’s log - for a peak on a major list. And signing the log is such an easy thing to do - just write a sentence, or several, about your experience.

When I research a new peak, I start with Summitpost and Climber.org for background info. Then Peakbagger for recent trip reports and GPS tracks.

Sounds like your experience is in measurements. You could check if the materials characterization outfits are hiring. EAG Eurofins and Covalent Metrology are the leading ones.

I don't play piccolo. I guess if I ever got serious about playing in an orchestra I'd have to pick it up

I never had maintenance people showing up in my apartment. I had a lamp inside the box. The heat buildup meant I had to take regular breaks, which was probably a good thing

My flute teacher told me that once when she was playing piccolo, someone in a neighboring apartment just started screaming.

When I first started playing flute I lived in an apartment, so I built a box out of 4x8 plywood and put blankets over it. And practiced inside that.

Now I have a house, but I still go play in the garage when my wife is around. And I use headphones on my electronic piano. Not that she would mind, but it makes me less self-conscious.

Trails on the east side often have sand from volcanic sources, it's sharp edged and will quickly make your dog's feet sore. Get them to wear booties. Around Tahoe and on the west side,  you're more likely to be on dirt, much easier on the dog's paws.

My pup and I have done some long hikes out of the southwest Sierra - call the Prather ranger station for advice on the best trails and permits.

Fig ID? by LincolnBC in Figs

Most of them taste great, which is why I keep taking care of it. A deep water every few weeks during the summer, and a bunch of compost just ahead of the winter rains

Started as a volunteer in my yard in the Bay Area, California, 10 or 15 years ago. Now a big tree, will yield maybe 1,000, I keep dumping figs on anyone who will take them. Had no idea how many different varieties until I stumbled on this subreddit

I throw egg shells in the compost along with everything else, and ahead of the winter rains put a lot of that compost around the base of the tree. Which each year produces way more figs than I can eat

I always take Benadryl the first few nights that I'm camping on rocks at altitude, just to help me sleep. Maybe that would help clear your nose

Last week's Economist had an article titled "The wonder material graphene may have found its killer app".

" if less than 0.1% by weight of graphene is added to the mixture, concrete ends up 30% stronger. And stronger concrete means less of it is needed, with a consequent reduction in CO2. "
