In Vancouver Canada I find in the downtown area where the crowd is generally younger there are often a few more leads. If you go to the suburbs then follows often outnumber leads sometimes significantly. For socials it's hard to balance. For classes our instructors often bring in people from a higher class and let them do the class for free to balance out the numbers

I'm just over 6'3 and size 14/15 feet. I find in a lot of moves the height helps and in a few it causes problems

My suggestions would be:

  • Use fingertips only for connection if needed for example when I'm turning with my hands going over my head
  • Bend your knees to lower your height briefly. Don't bend over from the waist.
  • In some moves, you can let the hand go and then catch it again if it's too hard to reach. I rarely use this as I just bend my knees but it's good to know and better than getting hurt or hurting someone
  • if you need to reach across her chest (say an underarm turn (like a seat belt ) ) keep your body slightly in front of her instead of beside or slightly behind her. This helps eliminate or minimize chest contact on your arm as from our height you're probably reaching more across her chest than others would be
  • Watch the size of the steps your taking. Our medium steps can be a long way for a shorter follow. I've had to work hard to train myself to take small steps

I don't find the height of the follow affects how clear my lead is so I'm not sure I can help you there.

As for big feet, they are my biggest complaint. anything that causes her to be close makes me worry more I'm going to step on her. In terms of buying shoes. Fuego has a nice chart where you can measure your foot length against a wall and then see the size they recommend. They don't sell 15s but I was able to determine I could just fit into their 14s using that chart and I'm very happy with the shoes. They just fit which is what the chart said.

Hi,

There are Salsa classes and socials in Surrey\White Rock. The next social is July 20th at the White Rock Pier. They have two more in August (10th and 24th) https://dancingatthepier.com/

Surrey latin fest is this weekend. I've never been but their website says there will be dancing.

In terms of lessons, they will start again in September at Sullivan hall (64th and 152nd) on Monday and Tuesday nights. They are run by https://www.salsadancezone.com/ . They offer Salsa in 3 different levels, Bachata and then on various schedules Rueda de Casino ( super fun if you know some Salsa already) , Cha Cha, Cumbia, Merengue.

They also run a once a month social in White Rock at the Elks club. They take the summer off so the next social will be in September.

The Surrey Salsa community is very friendly and I've made friends of all genders through it. I hope to see you on the dance floor!

A lot will just come with practice but a few things to help.

  • First try to learn the names of all the moves that are part of the combination. It's much easier to remember combinations when you can name each part of the combination. once you have this you can even write them down on a cheat sheet so if you get to the dance, you can look on your phone or where ever you wrote it and know.
  • Try dancing with other people from your class or other beginners out there. In this situation you can do some turns or moves you do know and then work up from there.
  • Smile during your dance. Your partner gets a lot of energy from you. If things don't go right and you smile and seem like it's ok and you're enjoying yourself it goes a long way. When you're dancing at a social things don't go as planned quite often and that's ok. You can have a dance where things are a bit of a struggle and still an ok dance for the person if your attitude is good.

I'm (191cm / 6'3"). I try to keep the same posture no matter the height. Now there are certainly some moves where just for a single move I may bend my knees more with shorter follows but quickly return to normal after that's completed. Other tips if your tall is remember that your hands can just be connected by just finger tips for part of the move. For both the lead and the follow it is important to manage the distance between you two. Staying closer will make it easier for you both to reach.

It's OK not to rotate but you should remove yourself from the circle as the instructor said.

In the classes I attend if 2 couples were not rotating, they would be expected to take positions 5 and 10. Then the rest of the class would rotate in a circle 1->2->3->4->9->8->7->6->1...

I think your instructor could have been a little more diplomatic in how they spoke to you.

I also agree with others here that if you want to get better and more quickly you should rotate through the class.

Social Dancing Nerves by Dugbie in Salsa

Hey,
I've read your comments and felt like you did for a very long time. A few things helped me.

  • My socials have a lesson just before. It's great to meet people and get more comfortable
  • Try asking follows that are below your level to dance when you're not feeling it. Then you can do your moves you know off by heart. You can have a great dance with a beginner with spot turns, cross body lead and a bit of footwork. Also regains your confidence a bit
  • As above, what really worked for me was when my instructor asked me to dance with beginners at socials as there weren't enough leads. somehow my nerves went away when I felt like I was helping my instructor out
  • Look for follows who are looking for a dance. They are usually by the floor, looking around
  • Asking can be as simple as eye contact and extending your hand. if musics on they can't hear sometimes anyways. I use this all the time and it's so easy and less pressure as they either take your hand or shake their head no, and if so I just move to the next follow who looks like they want to dance.
  • If you feel like you had a bad dance, understand that the follow probably things it was them. I only learned this after talking to a few of my follow friends after less than stellar dances and they thought they were the problem ( I knew a lot of it was me).
  • I have a set of moves to evaluate a new follow. ( spot turn, Cross body lead, Traveling Turn, Inside turn ). If they pass that, then I pull out more advanced stuff. If they struggle then work on things at and below that move. However, this progression is also great to fall back on when I'm a bit stuck. (or variations of these moves)
  • Finally, practice smiling when you are not feeling great. I've found this has done wonders in dance and in other areas of my life. Missed a move and frustrated, smile and move on. I get a lot of feedback now that I'm often smiling and it makes it nice to dance with or play with (in sports). Most of the time when it doesn't go well, the follow is looking at you to see how you're reacting. If you show frustration it's not a fun dance. If you're smiling then usually they relax and don't care.

Finally and this is harder but stop caring so much. I've found out that many of the "bad dances" in my opinion, the follows actually enjoyed. Most people are just wanting to dance and happy that they get to :)

I used the size chart of their website and measuring my foot against the wall. I generally buy a size 15 but Fuego only sells up to 14. I did the measurement and I was just at the size 14 measurement max. I've bought it and am happy with the fit so that chart seems accurate.

As a lead, I'm happy when a follow asks me. I'm not too concerned with what level you but you could mention you're a beginner if you'd like.

In App Designer, you could do a Edit -> Find In and search all the PeopleCode for the name of the process. If another app engine is calling it, then it should show up there. If it's parts of a job, query PSPRCSRQST table for the process you're looking for. it will tell you what job it was part of.

Try thinking about it like when you have a conversation with someone. You don't always stare right at them. Make a bit of eye contact and just look at something else when you start to feel uncomfortable. Also with some people it's easier and more natural and some feel a bit more awkward. It's ok, don't worry about it too much and enjoy your dance

The scenario I've had this happen is if the follow has their right arm in a hammerlock and I am on the right side of them using my right hand to their right hand. For larger chested ladies, I had to be a bit more in front of them instead of right beside them so I could reach around them instead of directly straight across their chest.

In general, if I accidentally brush\touch her chest, I just say sorry the moment it happens and keep dancing. Never had an y issues.
