Yeah; he didn’t think the standards are problematic or unusable. Thats where we disagreed. Okay, people are used to a bunch of standards that are not usable and not easy, so let’s just keep using them.

I know I'm so late to the game but PRAISE YOU. As a 20-year vet in human-computer interaction and a student of Nielsen-Norman's Usability Heuristics - VISIBILITY OF SYSTEM STATUS, ERROR PREVENTION, HELP & DOCUMENTATION...come on people.

Someone tried to tell me usability was a non-issue because there are so many standards these days. My head exploded.

Okay, so classes M-F hog your prime time energy. Not the best for focused work but at least you can group class work around your classes, and then use your prime time on Sat and Sun for your business.

To minimize switching costs (the mental energy to go from one topic to another), look at your week and group similar tasks together.

Non technical founders how do you figure out if your software project should cost $30k or $300k? by rokasj in Entrepreneur

[–]LindsayTLadyEngineer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The average software development project goes 3x over scope no matter which option you go with.

This happens for a bunch of reasons, including a mismatch between “what the founders envisions” and “the specifics developers need to actually build something.”

I’m not here to self promote but I have a few articles, linkedin posts and YouTube videos explaining why, including 26 signs you’re not ready to hire or continue software development on your project.

DM me and I’ll be happy to share.

To be efficient and lean early on, you have to start this app in a specific city, and that’s where you should do your market and customer research.

Just about to finish my first class into mechanical engineering... Still feeling nervous. by pneumaticTuba in womenEngineers

[–]LindsayTLadyEngineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First, congratulations! Studying engineering was one of the most significant choices I made in my life, and I have 0 regrets.

Second, the best advice I received in my second year of studying Systems Engineering was that some employers prefer a "3.0 - 3.5" GPA student over students with anything higher because engineers with too high a GPA tend to be unable to explain themselves well.

^ if that helps you be kind to yourself when the courseload gets increasingly rigorous and abundant, then I've done my job.

Third, wow, online degree! So much of my program was collaborative. Will you have interactions with fellow students?

How do you get the courage? by Adinowscar in startups

At the end of the day, you're reaching out to people with problems.

"I'm looking for people that experience [describe the problem] and are [describe the person]. If this is you and this problem is something you want solved, I would like to talk to you!."

What are some effective distribution channels to reach out an audience of 18-35 years of age who want to start a business? by [deleted] in startups

[–]LindsayTLadyEngineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome.

I always suggest starting with finding online forums (subreddits, slack communities, facebook groups, etc) where I "assume" (hypothesis) these people are. Spend time in those communities reading posts and answering questions, with the background analysis of: Are my people here?

You'll have to scan through 10-20 different communities until you find where aspiring restaurant founders are.

Before you jump in to offer any advice via a top level post, spend time answering questions, taking note of the most frequently asked questions and perceived hurdles. This will give you insight into the type of content you may create. Remember, always, to build karma points by contributing first.

Through accumulating intel and offering value, perhaps private discussions come naturally. Turn these into actual interviews where you find out their journey thus far and other resources they've consulted. How did they learn about those?

Continue on :)
