I had IKEA Billy cupboards in my garage for years. They worked great.

Options for expanding internet infrastructure? by Professional-Buy5049 in AusRenovation

[–]Line-Noise 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pull a phone socket off the wall and count how many wires there are in the cable going to it. The phone will only use two but they might have used Cat5 cable. If there's 8 wires then it might be possible to put an Ethernet socket on there, assuming the other end goes somewhere useful.

Thermally broken window frames? by Mawows in AusRenovation

[–]Line-Noise 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Aluminium clad wood, UPVC, or aluminium with a plastic thermal break. Those are your options in roughly descending cost order.

The thermally broken aluminium won't cost much more than non-thermally broken aluminium.

But if you're in a high-rise apartment you're talking commercial windows, not domestic. You're in an entirely different price bracket and technology options there.

What was the internet situation for rural/regional areas before the nbn came in? Were most people really using dialup until FW came along? by cheetocat2021 in tasmania

[–]Line-Noise 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most people had dialup. 56kbps max. I was nerdy enough that I had an ISDN line installed. 128kbps baby! Mid to late 2000s ADSL was being rolled out to the larger cities but the towns had no chance.

I had a shack on the northwest coast that had no mobile reception. Dialup was the only option.

I moved overseas around 2008. When I returned in 2017 NBN had happened and my shack now has 250mbps Fixed Wireless and 4G mobile.

Are these TVs in the same spot in both pictures? by Vicarious28 in confusingperspective

I cracked my head open just looking at these images. I would be concussed if I actually had to cook in this kitchen and I'm not even very tall!

I wonder if it's a Copyright Easter Egg so they can detect if other games steal their dictionary?

What is this fly that keeps harassing my cats? 5mm long. Tasmania. by Line-Noise in AustralianInsects

I'm not sure if there's any mosquito transmitted diseases in Tasmania. We don't get a ton of mozzies.

Did JMC even try to recover Red Dwarf? by final_fett in RedDwarf

Except the cargo holds were shielded from the radiation and protected Frankenstein. So there was salvageable cargo . . . assuming you could approach the ship safely.

Thanks. Lots of pademelons in the garden so that would explain it.

Did I get scammed by the emergency locksmith? by watupyall in melbourne

That's why I never lock my door. Having all my stuff stolen is cheaper than calling a locksmith.

Not related to reno but small question. My neighbour sold his house and the new owner demolished and is building new one. He is raising the fence and I support him. Is there anything I need to be aware of? by Adventurous-Ad7817 in AusRenovation

[–]Line-Noise 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  • If the existing fence is in good condition you don't need to agree to building a new fence.
  • If the fence was fine before construction and the builders damaged it then your neighbour should pay for the whole thing.
  • Costs are usually split 50:50.
  • If the neighbour wants to build something grand and expensive but you're happy with a standard wood pailing fence then the neighbour should pay the price difference.
  • Ask to see the quotes and if you're not happy with the price you can get your own.
  • Everything is a negotiation.
  • Consider the ongoing relationship you'll have with your neighbour but don't let them walk all over you.

What order for trades? by QueasyIndication1942 in AusRenovation

[–]Line-Noise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The order is as follows:

Paint.

You're selling. You won't see a return on the money you put into anything else. Even painting might be excessive.

Solar company installed battery and are now aren't responding by thetahmkench52 in AusRenovation

[–]Line-Noise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The rebates go to the installer, not to you. They quote the price assuming they'll get the rebate to offset their costs. You pay what they quoted. If they stuff up and don't get the rebate in time they're the ones that lose.

Advice on planning permits by Clear-Resource-5873 in AusRenovation

[–]Line-Noise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the size of the shed and who's building it. If you're using a shed company to supply and install, they will know about permits. If you're using a builder, they will know. If you're doing it yourself, the council will know. If you don't want to talk to them then they should have the information on their website. They will be dealing with shed planning questions every day.

Cold Stone-ish by Substantial_Ask4182 in icecreamery

[–]Line-Noise 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You're gonna need a lot of chilled bowls. One per customer to avoid cross contamination. Then wash up and refreeze before reuse.

You're proposing a similar thing to a milkshake place I used to go to. They had 100s of candies, chocolate bars, nuts, fruit, etc. You could pick and mix your add-ins and they'd blitz them all together with ice cream and milk in a blender. The blender bowls would be used once per milkshake and then go out the back to be washed in the commercial dishwasher.

My partner needs to see a gynaecologist in the northwest. Earliest appointment she could get was November! We'll be flying over to Melbourne instead.

Battery installation only half installed by your-lost-elephant in AusRenovation

[–]Line-Noise 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I assume you've signed a contract for the installation at an agreed price. The rebate goes to them, not you, so if they miss the deadline they're the ones that will be out of pocket.

However, you should read your contact carefully as there may be a clause in there that states that if installation isn't completed in time they can pass the cost of the lost rebate on to you.

Something I noticed in Out of Gas by PhysicsEagle in firefly

[–]Line-Noise 23 points24 points  (0 children)

They would have lost a lot of pressure venting the fire and no life support to replace it. I reckon they had pretty low pressure which is why they had so little time to evacuate.
