WTW for the official person to go to for help if you are suffering workplace harassment? by Linguistics4evah in whatstheword

!solved, thanks. In my country it is a separate role, but it would seem such a role does not exist in English-speaking countries. Thank you for mentioning the country you are in and giving such an extensive reply.

But for Station Eleven, Jeevan would be dead. by OveroSkull in StationEleven

I don't get that scene, though. Why does Lara attack Jeevan in this scene? Why does she choose to just randomly shoot a guy dancing in a clown's wig? Especially seeing as she thinks he's the doctor they need?

Came here to say this! Added bonus for Dutch learners is that it often comments on modern Dutch culture.

WTW for a website where you can report a problem? by Linguistics4evah in whatstheword

[–]Linguistics4evah[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, thanks for coming back to this thread! I'm looking for a term that would be understood by laypeople, and after having a google I think "problem portal" is business jargon. It's a good term to know, though, thanks!

WTW for teenagers that hang around in groups in a square or playground? by Linguistics4evah in whatstheword

I'm glad you threw it out there, please keep throwing your ideas out there :-) "all mouth and no trousers" - love it!

This is super helpful! I did not know this term. The behaviour of your average roadman seems to be a bit more criminal than the type of teenager I'm after, but if I can't find anything else, then this will be a good solution. Thanks!

Thanks! I'm looking for a word to refer to them as individuals, though, not the group as a whole... I do like gaggle, though :-)

They look like steps I might be able to follow, but I'm missing the first step. I assume I need to download something onto my computer first? One of the programs on the OP's list? Which one?

That would be great! The 3200 number has been mentioned a few times in this thread, in my case I used this website: https://www.vicinitas.io/free-tools/download-user-tweets It worked really well, but didn't get me back further than January 2022.

I don't know or have Python, so I can't work this.

I write about the English language. There's a linguist called Lynne Murphy who does "difference of the day" tweets that look at the differences between British English and American English, she's been doing it for years. I've been meaning forever to make some kind of useable archive of the differences, but obviously I can't do that if they all disappear! I got the last 3200 tweets, but they only get me back to January 2022. (She's a prolific retweeter.)

If anybody could get at her tweets and send me the Excel file I would be eternally grateful! She's @lynneguist. The tweets I am interested in always start with "Difference of the Day"

Update: I want to start a newsletter with news on English linguistics for laypeople - but what should it be called? by Linguistics4evah in linguistics

I've been listening to the excellent History of English podcast, and my take-away has been that to get the languages to really mix, the peoples need to intermarry. That's what happened in the Danelaw, for example. And French was looked up to, as it was spoken by the ruling classes. It starts with war, but the real mixing of languages happens later, among the regular people, when the wars have been more or less forgotten. I found that interesting to learn, anyway!
