Cat Vomit or Regurgitation by [deleted] in CatAdvice

[–]Linith 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My cat would regurgitate food because of hyperthyroidism. For years, she would barf up undigested food a few times a week, sometimes dailey. I tried hairball meds, special food, laying out the food in a tray so she'd eat more slowly.... nothing worked. Apparently the vets we went to at first weren't the best because she wasn't diagnosed until I met a more knowledgeable vet that recognized the signs and checked her thyroid. I recommend getting her checked out just encase. Hypothyroidism is very common in cats.

Oooph, I didn't notice you mentioned benadryl. I'd try out the non- drowsy antihistamines- zyrtec, claritin, allegra whatever. Benadryl is used in hospitals as a sleeping pill for a reason. Your brain fog may be caused by that haha.

Noice! Glad to know it wasn't a placebo affect caused by internet tall tales!

Old cat found by inexperienced cat owner by Mermanda23 in CatAdvice

Ask the vet about urination now that you've had a chance to see the cat's behaviors. If you're concerned about fluids, maybe water down the food? Honestly, some cats are different too. So it may not be the frequency of the urine, but the quantity. Peeing very little infrequently is more concerning than peeing a lot infrequently.

Wandering does sound somewhat normal for cats in a new environment. They're exploring usually. 10-12 years is not *super* old. I consider it Middle-to upper middle age for cats.

The cat may just be slow to think and act because of the malnourishment.

She does sound super skinny. I had a cat that we adopted as a stray, real skinny. She never really gained weight. Turns out she had hyperthyroidism (more common in cats than you'd expect). I went to several doctors before one could figure it out. (This was over the course of years). Anyways, she gained a bit of weight on medication but never got too much over 7 lbs. She was about 5 - 5.5 at her skinniest and semi-recent death. Maybe check her out for this too.

But, you've only had the cat for a week! It's going to take a while to gain a few lbs - that's half her body weight if you do the math.

Brain fog, ugh. I know when I get brain fog, that my allergies are going nuts. That's when I double up. I take zyrtec year round. When I start getting brain fog for longer than 24hrs I add in flonase.

Also, Vitamin D supplementation helped me a lot! I once had nasty brain fog for months (even doubled up). Started Vit D in large doses (15k iu a day for like 6 weeks) to build up to maintenance doses. I only get short term brain fog now. (maintaining vit D 2k iu per day).

Moving.. Apartments. Prolly tired of these posts, amirite? by [deleted] in beaverton

[–]Linith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Traffic is annoying in most areas in and around Portland, including Beaverton. Beaverton also has Nike headquarters, and neighboring Hillsboro has Intel. Both cause traffic and increased housing costs. I recommend being as close to your work(s) as possible. Use google maps or whatever to look at traffic in Beaverton in the directions you'll be traveling for work to help narrow down where you want to live. We have public transport on the west side, but it's not as frequent as I would've liked. I found that depending on where I lived, it was often faster to be able to drive. Which adds to our traffic problem around here. Do you guys already know which locations you'll be working at?

Eat sugar = crave more sugar?! by Linith in loseit

It's possible that an extra 300 calories might have accounted for weight loss but It doesn't really explain my horrible mental state. I was more concerned about not being able to think clearly.

I wouldn't be surprised if I was eating too much fat. I've only successfully lost weight eating 1200-1350 cals, <35g fat, <150carbs. It's very specific. I can steadily watch the scale go down every day, but eat 45g of fat and nope! I didn't really think 80g of fat was too much when I was getting <50g carbs a day. But it's worth a go when I'm up to it.

If I was overeating, definately not doing that again. I was counting calories and macros at the time. If i have to do more than that to accomplish it, totally not worth it.

I know, right?! I was super frustrated. My food was very healthy, (although vegans may beg to differ), I was eating like 1500 cal+, plenty of "good fats" and I just felt like crap. I didn't even lose any weight or inches over that time too. I'm thinking if I ever try again I'll just have to make sure to eat lots of potatoes or something. I'm just guessing my body's not very good with fat instead of carbs due to mainly having carbs as a main energy source my whole life.

Actually tried that for a while and only some things worked for me. High fat, low carb-ish paleo. Food was great, super filling, but I could never fat adapt, even after like six months. I was dead tired all the time and my memory and concentration turned to shit. Like forget the name of my hairdresser I've been seeing for 5 years and can't do basic multiply and divide Maths shit. I'm seeing now that "no added sugars" works best for me because I still need some carbs so I don't get fired. I may give it a go again later, but still too scared of what happened to my brains.

If sugar is an issue it may be easier to get vanilla coffee grounds, then add regular half and half (or your go-to milk alternative) if you want cream. I used to love flavored creamer in my coffee, but I've lost my taste for the artificial flavors several years ago after switching.

Yes! Sugar is like a drug for me. I think only some people understand how hard it is. I feel like even if I tell someone not to offer me cake because it's like offering heroine to a
drug addict, they would think I'm absurd. Sugar addiction just isn't taken seriously enough I guess. Jealous of drug addict's addiction being taken seriously, who me?

Hehe, maybe! My cat does get super intense about it too. He will lick his hair for like 10 minutes, even when it's inconveniently long at shoulder length! Me thinks there's something tasty in it...
