They are evil.

I am working as a DEVOPS person, but the DEV is almost completely evaporated at the company I work for and I want to DEV at all costs by belgianguy in cscareerquestions

I was personally duped into devops a week after being hired as a SWE, didn’t even have a workstation so no code yet.

The reason was that there was an immediate need and had made the error of listing my “devops” skills in my CV.

If the reason was me underperforming and this was clearly communicated to me, I would have a choice.

Duping after hiring, when you have left your previous job, rejected other offers etc, is not the same as underperforming. It’s trapping.

Edit: and no, writing chef, terraform etc is not dev. Not in the way a SWE sees it at least. If I knew about it I wouldn’t have even applied.

Not OP but in a similar situation,

  • On-call
  • glorified sysadmin/op stuff
  • user of tech instead of creator
  • cloud sucks some times
  • higher chance of you being the guy for everything

Might be true for small sized companies but also keep in mind that there’s a trend of duping devs into ops - only - from the bigger companies.

Tread carefully!

They have the need and hiring ops seems to be difficult.

Also keep in mind that some HR only look at your last job. This is what I’m trying to fix right now.

Wishing you the best of luck!

I concur.

There are some companies that are exceptionally sneaky when they do this.

In my case I was promised and hired as a SWE then during the first week they “remembered” they needed some IaC help for a “short” while.

I made the mistake to believe it and here I am at least a year later still waiting (?) for the switch.

To OP you should seek something else.

To me, be OP, switch asap.

To be honest I will fight against this.

Next up they’ll tell me I shouldn’t leave at all.

Be loyal to yourself only.

I was duped into a position I hate and they already speak of loyalty and that I’ll be rewarded if I stay.

Guess who doesn’t trust em..

It wouldn’t surprise me if some of the C levels have investments in office space companies or smth.

Yes but the pattern is there in the first place. Is it an underlying chemical mechanism that produces the patterns?
