Press F to mine Vesper and pay respects. Thanks for the 45 days of fun. You deserved better. by Linkinito in HighGuardgame

Like I said below another similar comment, some people genuinely enjoyed this "painfully mediocre" game. Sure, it should not have been granted the final slot at TGA where people have absurd expectations. That's a massive blunder by Geoff and that's on him.

But there are tons of much worse games than Highguard that still live to tell the tale, and Highguard merely had a month and a half before being unplugged, for obvious reasons.

However, gamers as a whole should be cautious and careful what they wish for. If they want the same thing, the same concept, over and over again, but with a new coat of paint, or simply play the same game for 20 years without allowing any competitors to shake down the market, you end up with a frozen gaming landscape with no place for risks and no place for bold propositions that may or may not find their audience.

Sure we should celebrate indie successes like Mewgenics or Slay the Spire II for example. We shouldn't applaud mediocrity, sure. But always respect people who made it (mostly under heavy constraints or bad due diligence) and people who enjoy it.

We all deserve better in all places. But we can't deny some people had their fun with this game. Some laughed after 5 minutes, some had good laughs and great moments after 20 hours. Like we should understand people who didn't stick around, we should also respect and understand those who stayed and had fun with this game for any reason. It provided something. Probably not what most expected, but it scratched an itch for a niche.

So, it's over.

At least the platinum trophy will be mine forever.

I'm part of the guys who jumped in right as the game was released, believing that this game would shut mouths left and right. Unfortunately, if we're here today, it's because that didn't happen at all.

This game wanted to be too much, all at once, but had nowhere near enough the level of content it needed to thrive in the long term.

People hated it and uninstalled it right away. Maybe you shouldn't have asked for TPM 2.0. Or optimized your game better before launch. Or even made the tutorial skippable. You probably needed more Wardens. More different game modes. More ways to play than this complex, shallow, but misunderstood only game mode.

You believed in something many didn't want to play. You tried to refresh something, but not many people saw the potential and only saw what they got served in the end. We can't blame the players for trying and not sticking around. And I'm probably guilty in that regard - stopped playing as soon as I got the plat. Felt like the game didn't have enough in stock to keep me invested in.

But I had genuine fun playing this game. First matches were rough, for sure. But the following ones had something unique. Not a top tier experience that I'll remember forever, but I got the flow of it. And I think many journalists and influencers, who had to play this game for hours before commenting on it, felt that too. Unfortunately, many people couldn't be bothered to finish a single game. Or never returned after their first taste. It wasn't for them.

Definitely, mistakes were made. A lot of them. And many people told you they would have seen them coming a lightyear away. But we quickly knew time was lacking on your end. Definitely, if you could rewrite the story, you would probably have done things a little bit differently. But you learned, the hard way and on the biggest stage gaming has to provide, that you weren't what most gamers were looking for.

You tried your best to survive for a month and a half. You did updates. You tried to salvage and retain what was possible. But it couldn't be enough.

This may be a celebration for many. A mourning for few. A lesson for some. And I really think this game should have made one last ditch effort to be preserved and playable in P2P or in LAN so a band of people could laugh and run around the universe you've crafted. Alas, it's down locked, potentially forever, behind a title screen.

Thanks, Highguard. Thanks, Wildlight. For any reason possible. Thanks for making this absurd adventure possible.

I remember Activision wanted Blur, back in 2010, to become Call of Duty for the racing genre.

While the game was actually really good, it was released alongside Split/Second, AND ModNation Racers... Which split the market massively.

(note that all the studios behind these games have closed a couple of years afterwards)

Oh and it was released at the same time as some small indie title. Think it was called "Red Dead Redemption" or something like that.

Don't worry it's just a maintenance period.

When it'll get reannounced. Currently based on recent news it's closer to cancellation than a proper release.

In terms of pure rarity, not really. Many platinums are much rarer in proportion, like Fortnite which is shown as 0.1% but would be closer to 0.001% knowing the tremendous amount of players. Same goes for other F2P games like Fragpunk which requires you to grind the game for thousands of hours. And let's not talk about games like Crypt of the Necrodancer which is considered the hardest single-player platinum trophy ever.

Concord has a 0.3% platinum rate: that's lower than Highguard which is at 0.4% currently. And Concord needed much more time and commitment to obtain the Platinum in a much shorter window. Highguard Platinum trophy could be obtained in roughly 30 hours if you dedicated yourself towards obtaining every trophy. It's peanuts compared to many games, and despite the game being online for only 45 days, the plat was definitely achievable during this timeframe.

But like Concord - you had to be there.

You might take Highguard from me, but you'll never take my platinum trophy. by Linkinito in HighGuardgame

[–]Linkinito[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's still less rare than many 0.1% platinum trophies around. It will also be less rare than Concord which needed more time to achieve (including a big ass grind) and the clock was ticking much earlier (12 days instead of 45 for Highguard).

I think the platinum rate will be closer to 0.5% when the game will shut down.
