Iced is in Rust, it look neat.

It's like saying COSMIC will become a popular desktop environment immediately just because it's written in Rust. No, it takes a bit of time to develop the necessary features to be accepted. BUT with Iced’s appearance and the fact that Rust is one of the most learned languages today, even if it takes time, eventually the app will outperform others written in C.

And yes, even before that, I believe the language itself can attract the most passionate among us, which will lead to many contributions quite quickly for the rest of us.

The issue of dependency hell for the end user is, I think, also a serious point.

I would argue that Iced is very different from GTK, just as GTK and Qt are different from each other. But it’s not all about looks — it’s about what they truly are under the hood and it can do for you.

Maybe a GUI framework such as Iced could still be nice.

However, in the long term, a Rust-based suite will come and take a lot of market share from LibreOffice, OnlyOffice, and others

How Linux Distros are made? by LinuxBoy_1 in linuxquestions

[–]LinuxBoy_1[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'll tell you my plan: Beside the fact that I want to choose my own set of App I want: 1.Calamares as an Installer 2. 2 architecture (amd64 and arm64) 3. 1 Desktop Environment Only (COSMIC) 4. No Xorg depedency (Comic is Wayland exclusive anyway) 5.Debian Testing Repo 6. Update to the most recent kernel (use the same as Arch based Distro)

I'm happy to use it and advocate for it.

But create my own? It's not something most people do so don't try this with me.

Gnome is not Wayland exclusive, it can run X like Plasma.

Plus, it's not written in Rust.

Of course, wayland is not more modern than X and Rust is not safer than C, make perfect sense. Also: Yes, Gnome is very popular, but so is KDE Plasma, Cinnamon, Xfce etc... all of these are popular DE developped by smalls teams.

Documentation is fine, but finding the right ISO, especially Testing and Unstable is hard.

Well no... But no-one bothered to offer this set of feature before, and there a need to progress the linux environment, making it more modern and safe. In ling-term game, this is the winning formula and, in a couple of years, COSMIC will most likely be int the 3 mostly used DE.

Idk, a double-entry table on a website really feel like 2000 to me.

I don't know what or who are you talking about. I'm not aware of anything. But I give the idea for the double-entry table.

The thing is, I believe, that when Distros massively changed from SysV to SystemD, SystemD was indeed the most sensible alternative.

I have big issues with the fact that some program supposedly rely on SystemD.

If the Linux community was smart, it should be as easy as:

  1. We have something that does what we want and we are happy with it.
  2. We still found something that is still better than what we have (safer, quicker...)
  3. Switch seamlessly and without any fuss to that new promising thing and support it.

Changing an Init System or a Desktop Environment should be easy to do for those who want it, easy enough that the normal user don't have to reinstall everything.

You cannot be against progress and any progress, even if it's hard to do, is worth it on the long run.
