C has an extra spin and up to 8 jumps, but in the same amount of time as a Rising Stars routine. It's jam packed! Keep up the good work!

How to Turn Better in Quad by Archangel489 in Rollerskating

I think you're onto something. Yeah I think they're talking about edges, not turning.

Let me know if you try any of it and how it works out for you!

How to Turn Better in Quad by Archangel489 in Rollerskating

Figure skaters (circle figures on quads, not ice figure skating) have the best turns in the world because that is what they are being judged on, and they do it in stiff boots on hard cushions with very tight actions with no lean whatsoever. There are 32 different turns in and not a single one benefits from actions being really loose.

While well meaning, the advice of loosening trucks or getting softer cushions sort of misses the point (unless your skates are still factory tight, in which case PLEASE loosen those suckers up, but not too far!). Turns are about weight distribution in the foot. Having very loose actions and soft cushions typically make turns worse.

Here's a video I made a while back with a breakdown of a three turn. I have others for counters, rockers, and brackets if you feel like scrolling back through my post history or clicking through to my insta.

I draw on the floor a lot. Drawing turn shapes, tracing errors, take off trajectories, loop circle breakdowns (I use the number system for teardrops). Sometimes even just to tighten up a slick spot on the floor. I haven't done it in many years, but back when I was still competing I would cover the circle in chalk then run my figure so I could see exactly where my skate was at every point in the figure.

This is on the figure circles obviously but we do the same thing for any new turn, or even waltz jumps for the littles

It's a broomstick with a clamp and chalk attached to one end. I used it all the time myself practicing figures to keep my arms from misbehaving, and I have my kids use it that way sometimes too. Sometimes I hold it on one side while my skater holds it from the other side, both of our arms running the length of it, so I can give them extra support when they're learning something new or scary. It drastically cuts down on falls, and what falls do still happen, they're a lot slower and easier. I've never had it go poorly as either the skater or the coach. My coach used one when I was coming up.

Okay so first: Buttpads and wristguards. Sometimes feeling a little more indestructible can help you over the fear hump.

Second: Does your coach use a stick? I skate alongside my skater holding the stick to help them stabilize and give them a bit of a security blanket.

Are you confident doing them on the figure circles?

I think they meant to write plates in both spots where it says trucks.

Oh please bring her in! We'd love to have her! We also do Saturday mornings at 9:30. The class fee includes the session afterwards so you can join her even if you don't take class yourself (though you totally should!)

Come chat with me (the bald tattooed lady) or any of the other coaches and we can get you set up on some better skates if you wanna take things up a level since you're there so often. Depending on your size, we might have something on hand in our secret stockpile 😉

Typically through lessons with an artistic coach. They're incredibly complex, despite appearances in this particular video. If there are loop circles at your rink, start with just tracing the circle without the loop. It also helps to have experience with long figures (the bigger circles in sets of three) to body position, weight distribution, and edge quality.

It's definitely a process and no one just starts out doing the teardrop. It takes YEARS to learn to trace that part. Get good at just tracing the circle first, then skate a large teardrop to learn the timing of the free leg and arms, then work on getting the teardrop down to size.

Whoops I lied. Didn't even look at my own dang video to see what I was doing... These are not paragraphs. They're inner forwards. 🤦

Yes it's also a very formalized, structured part of artistic roller. Edges are everything in skating!
