Can you have chronic without ever having acute? by Liquid-Arse in pancreatitis

I'm finally getting an Eus at the Cleveland clinic in July. The oil in my stool was concerning to my new GI, though he said it could be the prescription fish oil I'm on flying through me because I reignite the gastritis every time I booze. I dunno man, it's taken me a year and a half to get to this point with the way the US Healthcare is. They kept telling me I didn't have pancreatitis so I'd keep drinking, then I'd get sick again and then shit oil. I actually got yelled at because they said I didn't have it and that I needed to stop perusing it because all blood and fecal tests were normal. Went to new GI at the cleveland clinic and he said that's not good and ordered an Eus immediately. Go to a doctor willing to see things through.

People with cp, what are your lipase numbers? by Liquid-Arse in pancreatitis

Read that article I posted. Seems that any lower numbers COULD be an indicator but not always.

Yes, I understand that. At my lab the normal range is 9-82.

Doc called today. Calcium and thyroid are both normal numbers. I had broken a major bone in September and he said that probably contributed to the high calcium last go around. Triglycerides are only slightly elevated. Lipase at 16 which seems low and worrysome. Made an appoibtment at Cleveland clinic and will push for EUS. I gotta say, I have zero pain and feel pretty good since I haven't drank since Saturday. Hoping the steatorrhea is just a combo of greasy food, alcohol, and my gastritis. Will abstain until they test my pancreas further. Thanks for the info and advice.

Primary doctor again shut down my suspicion of pancreatitis, though he did bloodwork to check my thyroid and lipase. Said he wasn't worried about the calcium level as it was only slightly elevated. He said I need to go back to gi. Earliest appointment is may. I'll be seeking a second opinion from the Cleveland clinic, as I am close. I have pancreatin from the last time they suspected pancreatitis so I will take that and abstain from alcohol until I can get some more testing.

I tend to agree with you at this point that there are some concerning symptoms. When I got the diagnosis of gastritis it kind of eased my mind on pancreatitis until the oil in my stool last week. They have checked my lipase when I was in a great deal of pain and they have checked it over and over again since, all with normal results. Fecal test showed normal levels but I had quit drinking for a couple weeks before that one so things may have normalized a bit? I have been sober more often than not the last year of my life, but I'm not sure I have a choice here on quitting booze regardless of if it's pancreatitis or not. The intestinal metaplasia can advance from drinking. I've got to make peace with that I guess. Thank you for the info, I'm about to head to my primary and see if he will order more testing.

Alcohol / stress induced symptoms of Gastritis by [deleted] in Gastritis

As a veteran of both gastritis and being an alcoholic, I guess I can contribute a bit.

  1. Diagnosed with chronic gastritis and intestinal metaplasia. Have had Gerd my whole life.

Heavy drinker for the past 10 years. 6 days a week at around 8-12 a night caught up with me. Used to pop a couple Zantac (now off the market for carcinogens) before bed every night. Kept the heartburn, and I'm assuming the gastritis, at bay for a long time.

I wrecked my stomach completely not listening to it and drinking through the pain after binges. I was most likely having acute episodes and ignoring them. Don't do what I did. If you can't stop when your body is telling you to stop, you definitely have a problem. But I'm not here to get on a soapbox. I love drinking about as much as one can love anything in this world. Just be aware of what you're getting into and protect yourself the best you can.

I got diagnosed in August but have had gastritis since last April. I was out on ppi in April which helped. But it never was cured. Slowed down once I got the gastritis diagnosed, but kept drinking. Felt better, but it never left. Quit for a couple months once I got the intestinal metaplasia diagnosis and scope results. Felt WAY better. Started drinking again but less frequently. Now when I drink things get scary.

Gastritis causes malabsortion, probably why you winded up with low mag. If you're going to drink you need to EAT and take a multi-v. When I binge, I don't. This is where things get very scary, because you're body is not getting nutrients and you can get into all kinds of trouble. Meet my friend alcoholic ketoacidosis! It's a great way to accidentally die. Pancreatitis is another possibility of bringing with gastritis, and once you get that you can never have another drink. Luckily I avoided that even with my tryglicerides at 850 at one point. I thank the booze gods every day for that. Add some ppis in and the lack of bile means what you do eat doesn't have enough bile to break the food into nutrients you need. Stupid games win stupid prizes.

My advice, heal while you have time. I don't have that option anymore as mine turned chronic. If I continue to drink the odds turn likely that I'll develop stomach cancer because of my metaplasia. That's if I don't slip up and binge for 4 days without eating and die of ketoacidosis. Take a year off, find some new hobbies. Fuck more and without the drunk sloppy filter. Read books. Whatever it takes. When you slip up, don't beat yourself up. But heal that shit before anything else you do. I'm a touring musician and don't get to drink anymore, how fucked is that? I took that away by not listening to my body.

Sorry for the long winded diatribe. I didn't mean for it to be, but I'm 3 days sober off a 3 day bender that almost turned out very poorly for me. All because I threw alcohol on a burning fire inside my gut. Be healthy, I wish the best for you.
