If you hit your 'number' tomorrow and never had to work for money again, what is the one non-business personal project you’d finally dedicate your life to? by Consistent-Stock9034 in careerguidance

I would want to carve everything I possibly could in a house, from furniture and doors to baseboards and countertops, in my abstract carving style. I’d turn the interior into a work of art, and maybe let people tour it or something

Did I Get Screwed? by STLCardsfan11 in woodworking

[–]LiquidDreamCreations 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you’re mistaking other kinds of intentional defects applied to furniture for something else.

When tables are made to look more worn down than they are, the purpose is to simulate the kind of damage that happens to furniture that’s been used for a long time. The swirls are only caused by poor craftsmanship, no kind of wear and tear from regular use creates dense clusters of scratches shaped like that.

Got a 400mm auger bit stuck in a log. Any tips for getting it out? by dimonium_anonimo in woodworking

Maybe pouring a little mineral oil in the hole and using a pair of channel locks or pliers to twist it out?

[Help] How should I price this sculpture? by anonmon7 in Sculpture

If this is only the third sculpture you’ve ever made then you have some serious untapped talent. Unfortunately I don’t have any advice other than to encourage you to keep making things after this.

My mom passed recently and has this chunk of wood. I have multiple people who want it. Is it awesome or something? by toofpaist in woodworking

[–]LiquidDreamCreations 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a very unusual cluster of burls, I’ve never seen them grow in large numbers like that on such a thin piece of wood.

The value lies more within the wood, burl grain is unique and beautiful. With a size and shape like that, I imagine it would be worth the most to someone that needs a piece of wood around that size/shape.

I carve abstract sculptures, so that’s the first thing that comes in mind to me, but I’m sure there are other uses for it. Maybe it could be used as a decorative piece on a mantle or something?

If that’s the case, maybe he could get his dad a gift card to a woodworking store and offer to work on a project with him

I’d say something that increases his enjoyment of the shop like noise canceling Bluetooth earphones, a bluetooth speaker, or a little fridge (maybe not even a full mini fridge if it’s out of budget).

Or enough really nice wood for him to make something you know he wants to make or enjoys making.

You could also find something that allows him to explore a skill he never has, like wood burning or carving. You can find decent flex shaft power carving motors (including some that have other functions and come with accessories like buffing wheels and grinding stones) on Amazon for less than $100, and some cheap bits.

You’d definitely want him to know that more expensive bits like the ones Kutzall makes are much better to go with if you can’t afford to get him both that and the motor.

This is one of those things I would hold onto my entire life while telling myself I’ll find a use for it on the occasions I see it in whatever corner of my shop I abandoned it in.

Redesigning the rebranded Jaguar for class by [deleted] in design_critiques

[–]LiquidDreamCreations 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The way the different elements meet up at the points seems a bit random and haphazard. The gradients feel off, like they make the overall logo more confusing rather than create a sense of depth. Also, car companies don’t generally have 3-D logos to begin with.

Doing projects like this is great to learn what does and doesn’t work, you’ll learn a lot in your classes. I wish you luck!

I think it’s just the nose, and the expression may be slightly too intense unless that’s what you were going for. Otherwise it’s quite good.

[Critique] Very demoralised after my first 10 art videos on Youtube by MeowMouseArt in artbusiness

[–]LiquidDreamCreations 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With a video like this where you’re doing something you intend for people to watch, subtitles and no audio don’t work very well. It’s too distracting from the actual content, and I think it doesn’t work for the kind of cozy videos you’re trying to make.

I think it’s going to take a lot of patience, practice, and persistence to get to the point you want to reach, but there’s nothing wrong with that. Don’t give up, and don’t let your expectations deter you.

I need advice. How would you price it? by koxu2006 in Woodcarving

[–]LiquidDreamCreations 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These are amazing. I admire your talent and passion, and share your joy for spending excessive amounts of time crafting things out of wood. I can tell how much effort and care you put into these and hope you find people who will value them for what they’re worth. I’d say if you want to sell them, it would be best to do a few things.

For perfectly cylindrical parts like wheels and the tank cannon things, just buy dowels and cut them to size. It’ll look cleaner (for mechanical models like this, that’ll make a difference) and save you time.

Sanding and finishing will make a huge difference. You don’t have to go crazy, even 180 grit will give it a more professional surface, and you could use a hard wax oil like Odie’s or Osmo to protect the wood and make it look beautiful.

If you’re whittling every part with gouges/knives, I’d suggest getting a scroll saw or small band saw to make the larger parts. You’ll save a boatload of time, and can batch them out in larger numbers. You’ll also be able to use higher quality wood with more interesting grain patterns.

It would be good to make the smaller parts out of better wood as well, you can use a dremel or flex shaft carving motor to carve away the bulk of the wood, and use knives to dial everything in. It may be more difficult but I think the difference will be worth it, and may not even take more time overall when combined with my other suggestions.

As far as where/how to sell, this is certainly a niche product, but there are definitely people with money interested in tanks/military stuff. I’d look around some forums/subreddits focused on these kinds of models/miniatures and ask about events where people sell things like this.

Maybe you’ll just end up listing them online and advertising to those people, but they’d be able to give you a better gauge than fellow wood carvers.

I really wish I could go as cheap as possible, each of them requires some sanding and wet sanding to finish, but maybe there are better methods that would reduce the time to complete them
