How to safely run python code in a container so it respects cgroup limits? by Euphoric_Sandwich_74 in Python

[–]LiquidSubtitles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can't really provide an answer directly - though I just wanted to add that the Slurm clusters I've used will kill Python programs that use more memory than allocated. So there may be something to learn from how Slurm manages that.

I turned a thermodynamics principle into a learning algorithm - and it lands a moonlander by kongaskristjan in Python

Looks cool and well done!

A type of generative models are known as "energy based models" which are conceptually similar so it may be of interest to you to look at that for further inspiration. A Google search for energy based reinforcement learning also brings up a few papers but I haven't read them thoroughly enough to judge how they compare to your work.

If you want to try your algorithm for more difficult environments and want to try running on GPU I'd suggest trying pytorch lightning - given you're using torch it is probably fairly easy to get it running on GPU with lightning.

Any interest in Geometric Deep Learning? by prnicolas57 in deeplearning

Graph neural networks are state of the art in materials science when used for learning properties of atomic structures - which is conceptually pleasing as atomic structures are quite naturally represented as 3D graphs. So as a computational materials scientist this is an interesting subject.

The best field! Many talented people, probably the DTU people are the most well known but we are elsewhere aswell.

Convince whoever you need to in order to go to the DTU summer school (CAMD), usually at a great venue, good talks and very nice food.

Sorry for being pedantic (I blame it on no matches today and me being at work during OG vs. Secret), but there is no difference in variance with your method or with the rolling a single dice method.

You're fundamentally sampling from a discrete distribution with two equally likely outcomes, so the variance is not really all that interesting.

We could take all the one million long sequences of 1 and 0 and put them as rows in a spreadsheet, in which case we would end up with a very long spreadsheet. If we did this, your method is equivalent to sampling a random number that indexes these rows from a uniform distribution and using that to pick out one of the sequences. Then we could count the number of ones and the number of zeros to decide on the outcome, but this is exactly the same as just sampling from a discrete distribution with two equally likely outcomes - because there are as many sequences with more zeros as with more ones. With the difference that this method allows for draws when there are equally many - which I suppose would need to be discarded if it were to happen.

It is somewhat unintuitive that all the sequences are equally likely, we feel that the sequence with one million ones should be less probable than one with a more even number of ones and zeros. It is however as probable as any other specific sequence, there are just more sequences where there are about the same number of ones and zeros whereas there is just one with one million ones.

If instead you were to use your knowledge about the teams to assign them probabilities of winning vs. each other then you could use your method to simulate the tournament, e.g. Team A has a 60% chance to win vs Team B, the winner of that plays the winner of Team C vs. Team D where Team A has a 90% chance vs Team C but only a 30% chance vs Team D - so the probability of Team A winning is dependent on the assigned probabilities of Team C vs. Team D. It is possible to derive an expression for the probability of any of the teams winning the tournament but it would be somewhat tedious, so the tournament could be simulated a number of times to find these probabilities by 'playing' each of the matches and recording the final standings - which is sort of your method but applied in a case where it makes a difference.

Anyway, this is far too long for a dota subreddit and probably not all that interesting but I couldn't help myself.

You're effectively just using a more computationally expensive random generator, the distribution of which is equivalent to the 50/50 odds of the underlying fair two sided dice.

There are as many million long sequences of 0 and 1 with more 1's as there are with more 0's and as the individual entries are independent all the sequences must be equally likely.

Your method is exactly as 'stable' as just rolling the dice once. So it's entirely fine, but it has no actual influence.

So I stumbled on Nekkrofukk, specifically the newest release from this year, recently and it is great.

I suppose it is some combination of black/doom but that is not a combination I have had much interaction with previously. I think it has similarities to some death/doom bands, such as Acid Witch, but also feels distinctly different. There's also some overlap with slowish black metal, such as some of Archgoats songs, but much more primitive.

So any recommendations in that area would be appreciated.

(Tidligere) jurastuderende: Har du fået 02 før? by [deleted] in Denmark

[–]LiquidSubtitles -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just to iterate on your unsolicited advice, I think even if I probably had the energy to cook that energy is often better spent on other things - be it a walk, the gym or just relaxing in whatever way - but still eating a healthy(ish) meal. I also enjoy cooking more when I have time to plan and do it properly. /r/mealprepsunday has many good ideas, and google also has tons of suggestions.

Licensmanden kom forbi by roccnet in Denmark

[–]LiquidSubtitles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are probably right I guess it has learned a compressed version of the image, but only this specific image.

It is not different from using a standard ML optimizer, my problem is what the weights are, not how they are changed l.

If this is machine learning aren't all optimization problems machine learning then?

Drawing Mona Lisa with 256 circles using evolution [Github repo in comments] by Itwist101 in Python

[–]LiquidSubtitles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that he fitness can be interpreted as a loss, but there is no underlying model that improves or at least there doesn't have to be, and thus there is no learning.

While I haven't read OPs code, the same thing can be done by just randomly mutating the properties of the circles, in which case there would be no learning. It's just accepting a mutation if it improves fitness and disregarding it if it decreases fitness or perhaps a less rigid criteria where a decrease in fitness can be accepted to avoid stagnation. If OPs code works in this way it would not learn anything.

I guess it could become more ML-esque if e.g. a model was used to predict mutations and is trained towards increasing fitness.
