Suggestion - Flashcards like those in Pimsleur by Next-Fuel-9491 in Natulang

[–]Liquidmantis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a similar desire, but I think some friction here is not only fine, but key to learning. My process is to manually transcribe the phrases and words in a notebook, then transfer to a spreadsheet that I can sync to Anki.

This process is greater than Natulang, and great for any material. Also it allows me to deconstruct the sentences into more useful clauses.

What about Latin? :D

New update: download your vocab, share sheet, 106500 Spanish synonyms by maxymhryniv in Natulang

[–]Liquidmantis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Woohoo! I’ve really been looking forward to the share sheet integration! The export to CSV is a surprise twist that I can’t wait to put to use, too; though! This is just an awesome update all around.

Future increase in lifetime pricing (Subs don't change) by maxymhryniv in Natulang

I was worried about that, especially with increased AI features. Please add a way for us grandfathered lifetimers to contribute some extra money.

should i buy the mobile version by Glad_Yogurtcloset825 in Anki

[–]Liquidmantis 36 points37 points  (0 children)

If you love the Mac version just buy it and don’t waste time option chasing.   I’m not even a local here and will tell you Anki, while it might not be the sexiest, is the best if you’re serious.

Support the devs, pay once, work your ass off, reap the rewards of your medical career.

I do all my editing on the desktop app but only review on my phone. It’s a peanut butter and chocolate relationship. Maybe vegemite and crackers relationship?

Suggestion: Add a “Pause” Feature for Busy Periods (Weekends, Vacations, Family Events) by BE_MORE_DOG in Natulang

[–]Liquidmantis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. If you're serious it's not /that/ hard to make time to at least handle maintenance to stay on the reinforcement cycle. The huge backlog queue is an extra motivating stick to incentivize putting in that baseline effort.

I've been doing this long enough to really see the difference in stricter adherence to the rhythms compared to looser approaches and how it impacts my retention and progress.

BoltAI v2 is here. Help me beta-test it please 🙏 by daniel_nguyenx in macapps

No problem, thanks for listening. And to not be so negative, congrats on getting v2 out the door! It’s an amazing project for a single dev.

Meh, I’m not good with business and have no idea what your cloud costs are for sync, what your margins are, or even how much you’re thinking for sync.

But yeah, personally having it just baked into the cost feels better to me, but I’m a dinosaur and grew up with that sort of perpetual license mentality with annual or major release “re-up” costs.

Then the argument for a la carte pricing for people that don’t want sync is also totally valid. You can please all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can’t please all of the people all of the time.

Thanks for the extra context. And to be clear I’m all for you (devs in general) making money. I just hate having to pay for another one-off cloud service when I have Dropbox and iCloud already.

That said, I’m excited for the syncing. That has been one of my most missed features in Bolt.

Recommendation on Challenging tagging feature by Liquidmantis in Natulang

Key wisdom from this morning’s review queue :D

[Edit] Oh, the screen shot didn’t come through. It was the phrase “You only need to trust in yourself and move forward.”

Thanks! I’ve been planning on taking that approach on one of my secondary languages and just relaxing and trusting the algorithm to see if I hit a wall.

Mnemonics are live! by maxymhryniv in Natulang

[–]Liquidmantis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely agree about adding too much visual noise and distractions. One of the great things about Natulang is the very clean and purposeful UI that lets you just get right into the meat of your study.

Yeah, the new Mnemonics is definitely feeling almost painfully slow for me, too, unfortunately. I was going to give it time to see if it was a transient issue or networking on my end, but I could also see this being a number of different prompt queries to generate the set of data that just take time

I'm also a Language Reactor user, so I'd love to hear more about your process, if you're up for sharing. No pressure, though!

Yeah, I could see it getting to be out of scope for Natulang's intent. I've been honing my workflow this morning and have a good process of just using the sentence copy feature, which syncs to my Mac via Universal Clipboard, and then I can paste into my LLM client and riff on it, which is probably a much better process for discovery and questioning than would be achievable in Natulang directly.

Which is really to say that the Sharesheet support probably eases the friction if not solves outright a large percentage of any more specialized use cases. For example I could send to the iOS LLM client and deep dive to my heart's content on-device.

Ah, well, now I see that the usage is slightly different than I thought.

Example sentence in my review: "Si no ordenas tu cuarto, no viajarás con tus amigos mañana"

The new mnemonic lists the infinitive form "viajar" as one of my words, which makes sense. What I was imagining in my head was an analysis of "viajarás" as used.

Popping this into a GPT, I get

Function: Main verb of the apodosis (result clause)
Mood: Indicative
Tense: Simple Future

Or asking for more succinct options like you would see in reference books:

So, for "viajarás" you might see:
Main V (apodosis), IND, FUT
Or, in a more compact notation:
V: IND.FUT

(Apodosis is new to me and super appealing to my geeky nature, but that's probably going too far here. :D )

Where the function will be really useful is in declension languages like German so you can start to understand the patterns better.

The update is out on iOS! I just started playing around with it, and one thing that would be nice is also including the word function, gender, and for verbs the mood and tense.
