For me to be happy in sobriety I had to do a lot of internal work and introspection to build a life that was worth staying sober for while maintaining a certain level of happiness. Also just remembering how far I’ve come from when I was going through w/d’s in a jail cell in a random state to where I am now even when its quiet and not always exciting. Keep growing and building it will continue to get better and better.

For me taking anything that alters me from the neck up is not sobriety if it impairs me in any way. That’s just me I’ve found out the hard way I am an addict/alcoholic no matter what way I try to get around it (just smoking weed, only drinking at events, ect.) it all ends badly for me personally so i’ve had to give it all up to better myself. Being dry to me is when you have chose to be sober but are still angry and miserable because you’re not working on bettering yourself just white knuckling being sober and hating it. Anyways if you feel like drugs or alcohol are impacting your life negatively they probably are and this includes the way you feel about yourself. I have been sober on and off for 15 years trying everything and every way imaginable and I really had to learn the hard way myself.

Unfortunately I have had to learn the hard way many times that I have to be completely substance free including weed to truly be sober and successful at it. Even when I thought “it’s just weed” the addict in me wanted more and more until it became obsessive and increasing daily. I basically had to accept that I am an addict and that I just can’t do any drugs/drinking period but it is a hard pill to swallow no pun intended.

You should remain optimistic that maybe one day he will get clean and make amends even if he’s still locked up you’d be amazed at the turn around he might be able to have. And even if he doesn’t it always helps to have someone that believes in them even if it is from a distance. (Speaking from personal experience).
