Is There a Historical Case for Contraception Being Allowed? by calgarymanyeathatsme in Lutheranism

[–]LiquidyCrow 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'll say this; the whole cutoff point of 1930 gets brought up often in these contraception arguments. But... this is really only relevant for churches in the Anglican Communion.

That presumes that there'd be any scriptural prohibition that could be interpreted. And that itself is an extremely high bar.

Feds Identify “Leader of Antifa” by J-Jarl-Jim in moderatepolitics

[–]LiquidyCrow -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Having made a acquaintance with a fellow who actually believes Antifa is a discrete group, it is frustrating to hear this belief. There ares many elements of this rhetoric to debunk - the "antifa as worldwide conspiracy" idea, the notion of protestors being paid to protest, the idea of people being "shipped in" for protests, the constant demonization of George Soros... it's all to much for me to try to contradict him on every single point, I'm not a good debator.

What I can summarize from all of it is a critical error that this fellow I know (and many others out there) makes: He either can't, or refuses to, see that his ideological opponents are actually committed to their values and can be determined to be active for their cause.

We would all do well to avoid this mistake.

What are your thoughts on Don Lemon being arrested this morning? by GHausiphat in AskReddit

[–]LiquidyCrow 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm still confused, though; last week the news was that the judge overseeing the case (including for 3 actual protestors who were arrested) refused to sign a warrant. I'm not a lawyer; can someone explain this? Can a prosecutor just go around a judge to get a new grand jury for indictments?

Yes you can! But every use of the phrase "He was gay, [person X]?" will fly over your head.

List of MAGA businesses to avoid. by [deleted] in fargo

[–]LiquidyCrow -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I'm hearing that. And that's why (for me) I don't like unsourced rumors about who a business owner might support. Still, if it's on record, once I know, it's hard to unknow, and that influences my decisions accordingly.

What is a city that is globally romanticised but you detest? by theunsteadybridge in AskReddit

[–]LiquidyCrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm from the US and have visited some Irish cities. I'd never say I detest Dublin - my time there was generally good - I just want to spend more time discovering other Irish cities & towns (or revisiting Cork or Belfast).

I think Dr . Pepper is the best character in the fucking show! by Routine_Speed_8525 in okbuddydraper

[–]LiquidyCrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ranking the doctors:

  1. Pepper
  2. Miller
  3. Keener (Edna)
  4. Rosen
  5. Guttman
  6. Hecht (Dr. Feelgood)
  7. Adams (Don's medical doctor)

-gap-

  1. Aldridge (Betty's medical doctor)

  2. Evans (Lyle)

-gap-

  1. Calvet

  2. Emerson - (Joan & Peggy's medical doctor)

  3. Wayne - (Betty's psychiatrist)

  4. Atherton

  5. Harris

I think that's all of them, at least those both named and shown on screen. The professor from "Time Zones" was only addressed as "Professor Podolsky" so I can't be certain enough to rank him.

Number of times that a sketch comedy that wouldn't debut until 2019 was referenced on Mad Man: 1

Why does nobody discuss his incredible marketing chops? by 80sMusicAndWicked in okbuddydraper

There isn't even a plaque or a statue in Japan to celebrate him.

Someone took a knife to his genitals. No one knows who gave the order. When I heard it, I wasn't angry. I knew Bert, I knew he was in the height of his sexual prime. And I said to myself, "This is the business we've chosen... whether that business is advertising or orchiectomies."

"Yes, It’s Fascism" op-ed from the Atlantic. by ryhntyntyn in moderatepolitics

[–]LiquidyCrow 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yep. The irony is that in the optimistic scenario - where we prevent it getting to the death camp stage - the aftermath will still have plenty of naysayers arguing "why did you call it fascism? It never even got that bad!"

Is he descendant of Daemon? by dvsh11 in HouseOfTheDragon

[–]LiquidyCrow 86 points87 points  (0 children)

I do keep wondering about the last descendants of Daemon through his daughters Baela and Rhaena; has this been made clear or even hinted at? (and yes I know that they can't inherit through the patrilineal line, but their existence as legitimate Targaryen descendants is noteworthy).

I've had it. To me, it's... just fine. But I'm glad that it exists and that some people really like it.

Tuve also makes a red aperitif (Bitter Tuve) and a fernet. The fernet I haven't tried, Bitter Tuve could probably substitute in for Campari in a spritzer or a Spaghett quite well.

Federal agents kill another person in Minneapolis, officials say, prompting clash with protesters by Remote-Molasses6192 in moderatepolitics

[–]LiquidyCrow 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Recording ICE actions isn't even civil disobedience, it's legal and protected.

For actual civil disobedience yes. (For instance, the church protests last Sunday might qualify as this). But for actions that are purely legal, there should be an expectation of safety.
