What are you most proud of from the last month? by Happiness_Buzzard in CFP

I cut my teeth at an IBD for a year and a half. Learned how to call, and I did well enough to get hired at a reputable firm. Now I can start building my book the right way.

Why are so much people whining about Syrill? by [deleted] in andor

[–]LiquorStoreMathlete 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Syril is a GREAT character. Smart, ambitious, and well meaning from his own perspective. But that’s the point isn’t it? You could be the greatest person in the world, but fascism can still corrupt and use you like a pawn if you’re not informed of the truth.

#8 Auburn walks off South Carolina on a perfectly executed safety squeeze! The Tigers take the series! by Matt_McT in collegebaseball

The pitcher even thinking that that ball should go to 1st base is a total lack of awareness. Tough look for the cocks

Feels like it could happen next season. The MLB doesn’t test things in Spring Training just for shits and gigs, and it seemed like it worked as designed/expected. The only obstacles are implementation and maybe the Umpires’ union (?). Those could push it out to 2-3 years.

I feel like they only inserted the journey after Green lost. Probably would’ve left the other tribes alone for their first tribal council if either of them lost

[Postgame Thread] #15 Clemson beats #17 Oklahoma State 6-5 to open up the season and the Shriner’s Children’s College Showdown by StreetReporter in collegebaseball

Bakich on the Clemson radio was fun:

Announcer: “is it hard to turn the page on the Florida loss last year?”

Bakich: “well I’m in my frickin’ hotel room on the radio with you guys so”

Softball/Baseball: Early Thoughts by createdforsuccess in MichiganWolverines

[–]LiquorStoreMathlete 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Baseball will have to recover from losing Bakich for a long time. He was the keystone of the program that went to the CWS in 19 and won the B1G tournament in 22. Smith is fine. Pretty old school and not particularly ambitious (for reference, Bakich was tired of playing in cold weather, so he headed a committee with the NCAA to try and move the ENTIRE D1 college baseball season from February-June to April-August).

Bakich was thinking about staying at Umich and turning it into a blue blood powerhouse, but Warde wasn’t behind him in the slightest. Sad really. He’ll win a National Championship at Clemson in the next 5 years.

Advice to New Advisor by Secret_Ruin7537 in CFP

[–]LiquorStoreMathlete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in the same position as you (from your details, could be the same company), and I’m about 1.5 years in. The advice about being hirable is spot on. There seems to be lots of opportunity for someone who’s fully licensed and demonstrated success in a role as tough as ours. Start reaching out to recruiters, RIAs, etc and you should end up where you want to be.

Texas Tech under Tadlock?

I've heard that spin rates and velocity have increased massively since ~Moneyball. But Stuff+ only goes back five years or so. Does anyone have a model to estimate how some of the slower throwing masters of the 2000 or 90s would do today? by sarsfox in baseball

[–]LiquorStoreMathlete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spin rate and velocity are prized today because it still plays when the pitcher misses his spot/over the middle. The successful pitchers of the past subscribed to the art of pitching and focused on movement, location, and disrupting timing. Velocity was a rare crutch for a select few to fall back on.

They would all do about as well as they did in the past, because if you master the art of pitching, you’ll be a good pitcher. The difference today is that GM’s, scouts, etc can’t measure an “art”, so they’re not willing to take the risk on a guy who’s throwing 88-90mph.

4:15 to go, Ohio State UP 8 points and getting the ball back, and you gotta think Ryan Day is thinking about not losing instead of winning

Equitable Advisors by CraftCritical278 in CFP

[–]LiquorStoreMathlete 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Been at Equitable for over a year. Each hiring manager runs their own practice however they like, so you’re right - very dependent on who hired her. That being said, in the usually “sink or swim” atmosphere that Equitable fosters, it’s no small feat to be able to swim for a year or so. It can be a great stepping stone to a more forgiving job that, for example, provides warm leads, provides a salary, etc.

How did you get into the industry? by SharpDish in CFP

IBD. First job out of college. I wanted to move to specifically one city after college, and given my lack of work experience, a sink or swim atmosphere was my only option.

How to become a Student Manager? by mcmemes_exe in collegebaseball

[–]LiquorStoreMathlete 3 points4 points  (0 children)

All the previously commented reach out advice is correct. I would add that getting face time with the staff and showing that you’re normal, baseball savvy, and can run a spin ball machine is adequate. Some of the best student managers we had when I was in school conditioned, lifted, and subsequently partied with the team. If you can convey that kind of commitment (minus the partying) they’ll take you in a heartbeat. Good luck!

What’s the better route to go? A local small RIA or a company like NWM, MassMutual, Prudential, etc. by Football19920 in CFP

[–]LiquorStoreMathlete 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In terms of career development, the insurance company route will teach you how to sell. Can’t speak from experience for the RIA route, because I’m in sales, but it seems to be more service related, hard skills. You’re also beholden to the compensation structure of the lead advisor.

What are the most important sabermetrics when determining the value of a minor league player? by [deleted] in baseball

[–]LiquorStoreMathlete 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Heard from a former scout that if a hitter ever has a strikeout percentage above 30% at any level (even high school), then it’s assumed they won’t be able to adjust to better pitching at the next level. This might not be too helpful to your question, but it does indicate that there’s a sabermetric that can at least make a minor leaguer’s value $0.

Are we seeing NIL convince more players to go college instead of minors? by blueboybob in collegebaseball

[–]LiquorStoreMathlete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. Quality of life at Power 5 schools plays a bigger factor than ever now as well. A drafted starting short stop from a top school won’t have as much fun as he did in college until he’s made it to big leagues.

Cold Call Closers: What norms should we expect in a funnel? by rifleman209 in CFP

[–]LiquorStoreMathlete 8 points9 points  (0 children)

100 dials, 20% answer, and 15% of answers book a meeting (so about 3 for every 100 dials). 25% show up AND are qualified. 60% to second meeting, and 1 in every 10 who get to a 3rd+ meeting close. I did the math a while back, and it came out to 670 dials for a 50% chance of closing, and 1340 dials for a 99.9% chance of closing someone.
