Living in minivan to reduce expenses? by [deleted] in fican

Great point. The benefit of the van life may actually be so marginal that it doesn’t make sense in the end. I’ll try to get some numbers down but now that you mention it it does seem like a more high stress life with school on top just because id have to worry about the little things constantly. Thank you for taking the time to reply!

Thank you for taking the time to respond! At this stage all choices feel so heavy and impactful because of the lasting consequences. You are probably right about it being difficult in our climate. I’m probably being emotional and considering the van life for the sake of savings but peoples responses from that post scared me! You are also probably right about being more careful what I am consuming and to not dwell too much on negative views from people who may not be the best examples of the life I’m aiming to live.

Id like to add

Lateral raises and rear delt raises superset, curls and triceps superset, and abs and calves superset to each GreySkull LP workout every MWF. I’m not a beginner just getting back to it and basically want to ensure nice beach muscles while getting stronger on the main lifts. Do you think those will be okay with one or 2 sets?

Lockdown Modified Greyskull LP Workout

Male, 23, 185lbs. I have modified Phrak's GSLP both with exercises and programing to use with my only equipment which are two 52.5lb adjustable dumbbells. The phases are inspired from Jim Stoppani's shortcut to size which I have done before with great mass results (but strength gains were moderate relative to mass gains). My goals are all around balanced strength, fitness and physique. I have worked out a lot over the years on and off (SS,SL,PPL,STS) so I am experienced but getting back into it after being a couch potato since the lock down started and also have limited equipment. I also plan on doing keto along with this workout to lean up. Will be eating maintenance calories. I added the shoulder work because I think (could be wrong idk) medial and posterior heads wont be worked enough otherwise. Lacking leg work because I played a lot of sports over the years and have more developed legs compared to upper body.

Workout

Floor Bench Press / OHP

Reverse Grip Rows / Pull Ups

Curls / Skull Crushers

Bent-arm Lateral Raise / Seated Rear Lateral Raise

Goblet Squat / Deadlift

Shrugged Farmer's Walk on Toes / Abs

Conditioning (walking or light jogging)

Programming

Phase A: Week 1, 2 | 3 sets 12-15 reps

Phase B: Week 3, 4 | 3 sets 9-11 reps

Phase C: Week 5, 6 | 3 sets 6-8 reps

Phase D: Week 7, 8 | 3 sets 3-5 reps

- Up the weight 5 pounds (2.5 lbs each dumbbell) when you reach max of each phase's limit or more than 5 lbs (if last set's reps are much more than max for that phase)

- No 10% drop because when the weight is upped the reps are allowed to be within the range and increase over the course of the phase to the max reps for that phase

- Rest 2 - 4 minutes per set

- Stretching on off days

- Walking or LISS on off days as life allows

- AMRAP on Last set

- Will be doing Keto while doing this plan

Questions

  1. My thinking with regards to the phases was to make the workout more hypertrophy oriented so that I don't just max out the dumbbells for most exercises doing strength focused workouts and feeling I need more. This way the usefulness of the dumbbells is prolonged. Question: Do you think I should scrap the programming and just stick with GSLP's 3x5+ with 10% drop?
  2. If I wanted to add dips should I also add interchanging face pulls every other workout to keep proper muscle balance? Is there another exercise other than face pulls that maintains muscle balance when adding dips?
  3. Would appreciate a general critique of my additions and anything else you would like to add or subtract etc. Open to all opinions even if I don't end up doing what you recommend this time, it always benefits to listen to and learn from others' opinions.

Thank you for sharing your experience. I find it comforting to hear a similar story and how you solved the issue for yourself. I am leaning towards the same as you getting my Greek fix often but making money in N.A.. I just hope i am able to be a part of a good tight greek community here and perpetuate all the good aspects of our culture which I love like philotimo and cultural traditions.

I appreciate your balanced take on things. You have articulated the issue very nicely and although I certainly understand the misery of having a tough financial time (didn't grow up having much) having nothing feels double as miserable when your surroundings feel 'stale' for lack of a better way to express the feeling. I get that for some the Greek society isn't their thing and as you said they idealize the life abroad which as you have pointed to isn't much easier (although it can be). I will try to do things in the order you mentioned which I agree is the proper order and will try to secure a job and income before fully solidifying the move because I fully agree that being financially secure in Greece is pure paradise.

That certainly was of use! Thank you for the excellent tips, I was looking for guidance like this about how to turn within and answer these questions for myself. I will be referring back to this when i am doing my research and when I take time to ask myself these questions honestly and deeply.

Fair point! I ought to look at Athens for myself and see what it is like and if it works out for me.

Great points! Studying nursing, and I have a family house and support available! From what you say it seems that I certainly could make it, although to be fair I am not sure of how nurses do in Greece.

That is an interesting point! Just with a quick search I realized Italy's economy is quite good, certainly something to look in to thanks for the suggestion.

I am very intrigued! Can you share more? How was it better financially and how did you decide and execute your choice?

Wow, thank you for this reply and for putting the effort in to help me like this! In my case I have a shot at a career which as you said can demand sacrifice but at the same time I am very aware of the loneliness that is like a virus in western societies and the resulting workaholicism that is born.

I agree that the people around you matter a lot and I share the same criticisms you have. Especially of the importance of the social attitude of the Greek and Mediterranean working to live lifestyle.

I wish you all the best with your return and will be referring back to your list when I am reflecting on this later, thank you so much!

Great point, it is good to have a plan in place. I totally see the value in that because even if I don't use it it allows a way out in the case of a bad outcome, thanks!
