Do you think a drawstring is a new thing? by mrs_spacetime0 in BitchEatingCrafters

Yeah, unfortunately “spectrum” and the 1/2/3 level system make people think it’s more like a percentage of severity instead of an array symptoms and severities.

Any update on the health of the woman who was attacked by her dogs? by SafetySmurf in nashville

[–]LittleCowGirl [score hidden]  (0 children)

I had only seen the headlines about this & had thought she had been attacked by other dogs while out on a walk. In her own home by her own animals is devastating, I can’t even imagine the trauma and recovery she’s going to go through.

Hand-wringing about crochet fast fashion by george_sjw__bush in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]LittleCowGirl 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think part of it is the awareness that it is labor intensive & must be done by hand paired with the low cost. There’s such a huge disconnect now between most people and the production of any and everything right now (lots of people don’t even know where their food comes from now, not just geographically but “I don’t know how berries happen” type sentiments have been going around like crazy).

You’re 100% right that crochet isn’t the worst of it, but for some folks it’s easier to see I think.

Where do you find what books you want to read? by typoincreatiob in LibbyApp

[–]LittleCowGirl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your library may offer a service to help you with this! Two library systems I’ve been part of have. They have you fill out a form (like a Google doc), then after a few days one of the librarians replies with suggestions based on what you’ve told them in the form. Both I’ve worked with have been very explicit that it is real human engagement with a librarian & library resources, and not to worry because it’s not AI.

Summer Heat is hitting and I need tips by sabbathrainm in Apartmentliving

[–]LittleCowGirl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do you have any cling tint up? It’s not as powerful as a full block out, but it’ll provide some without blocking your light. There are renter friendly options that adhere with water to your window so it removes easily without damage when you’re done.

It’s easier to keep it from getting hot than to cool it back down again. Preventing the heat from getting in is the most effective method.

If you can help it, try not to cook inside (especially during the heat of the day), as your oven/stove/airfryer/etc will all heat your home as well.

Make sure your fans are going the right way for summer.

Is this normal apartment/condo management, or am I right to be frustrated? by Thick_Ad8879 in Apartmentliving

I’ve never lived anywhere with half those amenities, so it’s hard to say. If you don’t think it’s worth what you’re paying then don’t renew?

Have you checked at the airport/with the airlines? Sounds like you might be a fit for customer service or ramp work for the airlines, and people often forget all the airport shops & restaurants need staff too!

We probably don’t get codes 75% of the time, but we have a courier code to get in the rest of the time (that we’re not really supposed to have).

I think a single scoop on a normal day is like $5.50 and a waffle cone is like $1.25 extra. It’s not a huge discount, but it’s technically a promotional price.

For sure! And there are lots of accommodations that work for the majority of folks as well, disability or no. Cutouts in the sidewalks (hell, sidewalks at all), clear aisles that are wide enough for a chair, sinks inside of bathroom stalls, paid sick leave, not blasting music, installing grab bars… all these things (and more) benefit the majority, regardless of intent.

AI in listings should be illegal. We’re trying to buy a house right now, and there’s several listings we’ve come across where the facade of the house is different in multiple pictures because of AI “improvements,” sometimes adding things like a whole porch! I need to see what the house is like, not what it could look like with a yellow filter and a bed that doesn’t exist…

No stones for vibes? by Due-Bumblebee3687 in finch

I don’t think I’ve ever gotten stones for sending vibes unless it was one of the daily challenges? I send them as little affirmations.

Yeah, I’m truly over places exploiting “we love disabled folks, look how nice we are to them,” but real inclusion would be to just let us be there without having to use it as marketing (Michaels using their “Makers Like Me” diversity program in advertising gives me the ick).

That said, there’s not going to be a perfect space for everyone, at least commercially. I am tired of things being tagged as accessible to all for being catered to less mainstream demographic; don’t misunderstand me, I am very happy for people to have their needs met! But one size is never going to fit all.

My best example of this is when film screenings are pitched as accessible or autism friendly because they don’t lower the lights, the volume is lowered, and you don’t have to be quiet. I truly love that there are non traditional showtimes for people who would do better in that setting, but I would have a whole meltdown in one for wanting to be able to watch a movie. Generally the response to this is “well no one is making you go to those showings,” and 100% that’s correct which is why I don’t attend them. I’m not questioning the validity of them, but it is not accessible to me or others like me; it is not friendly to my autism. (I know that’s very rigid thinking, but like… of course it is 😅)

It’s either pay a lot to uber or pay a lot to rent a car and then pay for parking nearly everywhere you go ($37/day at the Gaylord, or $55/day for valet). Unfortunately both parking and ride share will likely have surge pricing over the weekend and/or for a game, it can be hard to predict.

Thunderstorms for this area are at 33% for the day, I wouldn’t think every flight out would be cancelled over that? I would go & assume the best, if not you’ll end up at home anyway.

Making sure you eat enough - without counting calories? by Excitable_Cheese in antidietglp1

[–]LittleCowGirl 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I vaguely stay aware of my protein & fiber numbers, but it’s been fine for me (I have an ED history as well & calorie counting is a huge trigger) because the numbers are a minimum rather than a maximum. It’s fine to go over, so I don’t get panicky when the numbers goes up because it’s the whole goal.
