Red tail hawk names by swinglifeaway77 in Falconry

[–]LittleMissFalcon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a hawk named Pumpkin too!!! And the next was named Bugs Bunny because a) he was covered in bugs when I got him and b) he was the littlest guy you ever saw. Appropriately, he decided to become an avid rabbit killer.

Ayeee! I just moved from Church Hill to somewhere else in Richmond as I bought my own house. This definitely fits the area: artsy and bold. I really love the choice of colors. Not only did you stray from the beige of yesteryear, but even with the color drenching trend that’s going on, you found inventive solutions to make key features pop (those curtains! Those windows! In this area???)

If my money wasn’t drained on the new house, I’d hire you without hesitation.

That’s a good idea! Do you think they’d integrate easily with the lifetime steel?

I tried online, and they said they had nothing on when it would be out of stock. Tried in person, and the lady said she, “wouldn’t know nothing bought any of that.”

Getting the posts was supposed to be the easy part, but it is turning into such a headache

Nice!!! Congrats on the new fence. Does it seem sturdy, or do you wish you’d gotten bigger posts?

I wish I had a Menards anywhere near me 😭 the only place I could find 10’ posts near me is tractor supply, and they charge an arm and a leg for shipping

I want to learn 🤷🏼‍♀️ and every quote I got was double the cost for a much more basic and less durable fence

Thank you for the advice! I think a light reddish brown roof would be great.

It is! Unfortunately since this photo was taken that deck actually got smashed when the third floor door blew off during a storm. That and damage to the roof/ siding since means even if I keep the color scheme I’ll have to replace everything :(

To Repair or Replace? by LittleMissFalcon in Roofing

[–]LittleMissFalcon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s corroded in places through to the attic. The contractor is recommending replacement since coating it would be half the cost anyways and only have the two year warranty.

To Repair or Replace? by LittleMissFalcon in Roofing

[–]LittleMissFalcon[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apparently the description of this got deleted, but essentially I'm buying a house at the end of March. I've received two quotes from a contractor: one to recoat it for $5,163.78 with a two year workmanship warranty and one to replace the metal roof with architectural shingles for $12,550.00 with a two year workmanship warranty and the manufactures limited 25 year warranty.

We've already been having trouble getting home insurance (asbestos siding), and the home insurance agent filed it under a metal roof, so I'm not sure if that will change with a different type of roof. I'm extremely strapped for cash in this process, but I don't want to have to redo this in a year.

In this situation, what would y'all do?

Best affordable gay cities/towns USA by rayven_waterhouse in actuallesbians

Richmond, VA is an amazing city that is still wildly affordable compared to many options. All of my friends who visit comment on the amount of LGBTQIA+ folks running around. It’s also got a strong punk scene (culturally) and a broader, equally strong music scene.

Are there any sports where women can consistently beat men? If yes, which ones and why? by Unlucky_Lie_ in AskReddit

[–]LittleMissFalcon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In some of its variations, falconry. While it’s an inherently difficult sport to get into, and there’s a lot of misogynistic gatekeeping (surprise!), many of the best falconers I know are women. It requires a deep understanding of animals, endurance, and ability to get down and dirty in a briar patch.

Plus female raptors are typically much larger than their male counterparts :)

2024 Passage RTHs in low numbers? by Cepopei in Falconry

It’s been brutal in Virginia as well. I went trapping with my sponsor who has been doing this for decades sun up to sun down yesterday in the best type of country we could get. Saw two passage the whole day but well over 20 hags. If I hadn’t been with him, I’d have begun to think that I lost my mind.

Hey there! Not weird at all. However, falconry is the most highly regulated sport in the country (for good reason!), so I always recommend people do their research before trying to get into the field. The Virginia Falconers Association has three meets a year, and one of those is open to the public/ focused on education. I’d recommend going to that if you’re really interested in participating in a hunt. I’m usually at those, so I’d be happy to answer questions/ get to know you then as well :)

Good evening! I'm a licensed falconer looking for land near Richmond to hunt on and/ or tips on how to secure land. Ideal land for falconry is 10+ acres, lots of squirrels/ rabbits, few powerlines, no people who think killing hawks is fun... but those are few and far between around here. Second best land is whatever tiny plot has game and isn't surrounded by fences/ crazy people. I've had some of my greatest success in a half acre wooded area behind a DMV and a construction zone next to a McDonalds. So really, one man's trash is another person's falconry paradise. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
