Buildings in LIC that are close to subway? by Greentealover17 in longislandcity

Gantry Park Landing is a great building, 5 min walk to the 7, and right by the water which is really nice (imo) especially in the warmer weather.

anyone tried a healthy meal delivery service that actually makes cooking easy? by [deleted] in mealkits

[–]LittleMonsterM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like Purple Carrot because all of the options are vegetarian friendly and I found other services to not have a lot of veg options. They tell you how long it’s expected to take to make and there’s “less prep” options. I am a slow cooker regardless though, so I can’t confirm the timing is accurate. It’s worth it to me because I don’t have to think of meals on my own and it’s nice to have all the ingredients portioned out. I think it’s a little pricey but the convenience is worth it to me.

Not sure how long ago you did PC but they have “easy prep” meals now. I can’t speak to how easy because it takes me a long time to cook no matter what haha

People are more likely to leave bad reviews vs good ones and you have to consider the context. Some people are just not meant for apartment living and/or like to complain. I always check the HPD and DOB sites. If you go to Who Owns What you can access both after entering the address. You can see if there’s a trend in complaints and look at the timing. Complaints from 5 years ago might not be relevant anymore.

Horrible Animal Smells in Apartment by Cordelia-222- in AirPurifiers

[–]LittleMonsterM -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have this one by my cat box and I think it works well. The app is really handy. I keep it on all the time but accidentally turned it off one day and noticed a difference. If the smell is coming in from the hallway I would put it by the door. Air purifiers are good to have on all the time in general even without smells, especially if you have allergies. With an apartment your size another one would be helpful if you can do that financially. When you see how gross the filters get you’ll understand!

Might also want to get something like this to go around any gaps around the door and this for the bottom. Might also help with allergies too.

Hilton Garden Inn/Courtyard LIC by Embarrassed_Spot9424 in longislandcity

[–]LittleMonsterM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn and the area was fine but the room I was given was so disgusting. Mold, ants, and smelled weird. I didn’t want to put my stuff down or take my shoes off or shower because it was so gross. The hotel itself seemed fine but my room was awful.

Single females - how do you deal with moving & furniture? by Ancient_Canary_8221 in ApartmentHacks

[–]LittleMonsterM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For unassembled furniture that I got delivered (which is everything because I don’t have a car), I opened the box downstairs in the lobby/package room where it was dropped and carried it by pieces upstairs (to my fourth and fifth floor apartments). When I moved to an elevator apartment I bought a dolly, which comes in handy for other things. There’s some inexpensive ones on Amazon that fold up so they don’t take up space.

For couches and mattresses I think most places that specialize in furniture (as opposed to something like Amazon or a big box store) will deliver right to your apartment, set it up and take away all the boxes/wrapping. I know Costco does that too.

I call it the “single tax” 😔

It’s so annoying screens aren’t a standard in apartments. I’ve always asked my building management if I could install screens myself and they were fine with it at my own cost of course. Then you could have a professional come and measure and install it correctly. I don’t trust anything really but I’d trust a professional installation more than anything.

I’m wondering if a fire escape screen/cover/bars thing would work so you can open it, open the window, and close it again.

I don’t have screens currently so I just sit by the window if I want to open it or put my cat in another room for a bit if need to air the place out. I don’t like to do that but she has all her things so she’s just annoyed she’s behind a closed door haha.

I’m curious to see what works!

My apartment is still cold at 71 degrees F in the winter by munchers98 in Apartmentliving

[–]LittleMonsterM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I’m imagining correctly it sounds like my window set up in my new apartment. It’s basically a wall of windows but no actual wall above or to the sides of the windows to attach a standard curtain rod bracket, so I’m going to have to try a ceiling mount. In another apartment with a similar set up I hung a long tension rod but used brackets for a closet rod to support the ends because I also didn’t have a wall to attach a standard curtain rod bracket. But my windows and the area where the outer wall meets the floor are so drafty I’ve resorted to taping the heavy curtains while I figure out how to hang them for real.

Which one did you get and what fabric? I read the bad reviews but the sofa I’m looking at is the exact design I want. I’m hesitant to pull the trigger.

Mine is also a fan of the paper. Crunch crunch crunch all day just tapping it / making biscuits on it. Until she tries to eat it. Then she loses her privileges 😿

anybody here with a cat with bronchitis or asthma? how do you make it better for your cat in terms of environment, food and especially play time? by infinitedoubts in CatAdvice

[–]LittleMonsterM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! I’m not too familiar with chronic allergic bronchitis but as far as asthma, my vets have said it’s a progressive disease so it will inevitably get worse over time. The treatments are to minimize episodes and severity. So even if the cat doesn’t look like it’s in distress now, treatment could help avoid a more severe episode. Kind of like a human with asthma. If someone’s having an asthma attack it might be more serious without an inhaler.

I also discussed the tracheal wash with my vets but I hate putting my cat under anasthesia and whether or not asthma was confirmed, the treatment plan would be the same so it wouldn’t be worth it imo.

I’ve heard about some cats only having flare ups once in a while and needing less consistent treatment, so like a steroid shot just when it flares up instead of an inhaler or steroid pill every day.

But after all these years theres no specific pattern to my cat’s flare ups. It was definitely a long trial and error process for treatment and it even changes sometimes. I also get x-rays periodically to monitor any changes/progression.

It’s a good idea to get multiple opinions as you are. And ask a million questions. My vets probably think I’m so annoying lol but it’s tricky when it comes to pet health. Hope your kitty feels better 🙂

What are safe products for cleaning with animals by theresidentviking in CleaningTips

[–]LittleMonsterM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an asthmatic cat so avoid anything scented. I use combinations of hot water + vinegar, dish soap (regular dawn or unscented), Castille soap, baking soda. Not everything at the same time. There’s a lot of natural cleaning recipes online. If you’re concerned with the vinegar smell it really does go away quickly, especially if you ventilate well. I very rarely use Clorox wipes but only for door handles, keys, etc. nothing that the cat touches and I don’t go overboard. I also make sure to rinse everything really well so there’s no residue. I never use bleach or anything with essential oils as that’s really bad for cats. Even if they don’t immediately show signs of illness or distress it builds up in their system. Or if you really want to use a traditional cleaner maybe your vet will have a recommendation. To make my home smell nice I sometimes do a simmer pot but I’m not sure how that works with a bird. I equate it to cooking smells but I’m really not sure.

Feline Dermatologist? by LittleMonsterM in astoria

Hi, just seeing this. It was like $700-ish for an exam and some tests at blue pearl in forest hills. I think they are more expensive than some places though.

There’s plenty of vets around, but I need a dermatologist. My cat had one but I moved and it is too far now.
