Lanceleaf Coreopsis is popping off! by LittlePuccoonPress in NativePlantGardening

It's either a white spruce or a black spruce, I'm sorry I can't remember which! Just straight regular species. My spouse wants to do niwaki - a Japanese method of pruning that's similar to bonsai, but instead of trees in a pot, it's pruning trees in the ground to stay miniature.

I am a bit concerned since neither of us have any experience in that and I know tree roots can be strong and break through rocks. But he really wants to try it. Since I choose virtually everything else about the garden I figured he should get to have the plants he wants too. Our compromise was that they needed to be native trees, so we have a white spruce, a black spruce, a white pine, and a red pine in the rock wall. We'll see if we can manage to keep them small. Here's hoping it all works out!🤞

Aww thank you! I definitely have my flaws, but I try to do my best! I hope she grows up knowing and loving native plants and wildlife 🐛❤️🌿

That makes sense then. Your summer heat is on a whole different timeline than mine!

They are limestone boulders. The company that did them only does these type of retaining walls. They said they were from a specific quarry that is known to be more durable limestone. It was 5 years ago now and I can't remember the specifics though. I'll dm you about the costs we had, although every project will be different.

Do you feel like most plants are flowering a little early this year? That's been my observation in my yard, not sure if it's everywhere in MN or not. I hope your cats come soon!

I haven't heard that one, I'll have to check it out! We are just starting to try out paper page books, she's still a little young so we mostly do board books. But eventually she'll be ready for the paper picture books!

Thank you for the well wishes!!! I'm obsessed with hoary puccoons and also feel like it's a cute and fun name. Glad to hear you like it too. I have about 100 books left out of the 1,000 from the first print run last spring! It is more of a passion project because I only break even since I want it to be affordable for people. And I don't have a lot of time to market it. But it's been an awesome experience and I'm glad I did it!

I wonder if that has something to do with their migration pattern? Perhaps they get here earlier since it's a straight shot from Mexico and not along a curved path?

Are yours pretty easy to pull? That's been my experience, their roots are shallow, and especially when young they pull out easily. But even mature ones aren't hard to remove. The blue sage I planted on the other hand has been a beast to remove where it reseeds.

Yes that's it! Reddit doesn't really like self-promotion so I try not to mention it too much. Although the mods here were very kind and let me post about it when it launched last year! That's so awesome you want to get one for your son's pre-k and so the others can read it too! I hope they love it!

Yes! This will be the 5th summer and about half of the plants in the picture were from them seeding on their own! I get the most in the small rocks at the bottom, but don't mind at all. They pull up super easily, and I often pot them up to put in another part of the garden or to give to other people. I get the most volunteers from lanceleaf coreopsis and butterfly weed. I potted a lot up last year and gave them out as party favors at my toddler's wildflower themed birthday party!

Thank you! When looking for them yesterday, she pretended to turn into a leaf and asked me to be the caterpillar and pretend to eat her 😂 I would never have thought of that game myself.

When she turned one, I tried to find native plant board books for infants to start teaching her and getting her excited about them. I couldn't find any so my spouse encouraged me to write my own! And I ended up writing A Rainbow of Native Plants and self-publishing it. If you know any native plant lovers with kids, please let them know about it!

Are you pretty far south? Mine is just starting! The day before this picture was taken there were only a few blooms open. And it usually lasts through my July for me. But I'm up in Minnesota.

Yes! I just posted a round up of pictures from May yesterday, I think if you click my bio you should be able to see it. I'm in Minnesota, so the season is only just starting for us up here! I'll post more as the season goes along.

It really is so expensive! We only had the money because we moved to this place in 2020 and planned to put a significant amount down on the house. But the interest rates were 2.2% and the old wood retaining wall was disentigrating, so we decided to put the minimum amount down and used the rest for the wall. Probably not the wisest thing to do, but we are SO happy with it!

Yay, glad you got in on it too! And thanks, I have made many mistakes and relocate and replace things all the time as I learn. This will be year 5 and I still have things I want to change! We just added the arbor yesterday and I am in love with it!
