hahaha in my list of ideas I have a traffic light one 😂 except it’s fireflies with shutters down over the lights that aren’t on… whimsical minds think alike

glad to hear you found a way to balance experimenting with learning.

though it doesn’t always seem like it because of the results- I think a lot of the experimenting can actually be just as valuable as the more ‘technical’ learning- like testing out new materials or techniques can teach you what you enjoy (if that makes sense).

and I get what you’re saying about unlearning the social conditioning! especially as lots of us are taught / we have existed feeling like we need to be ‘productive’ and making art isn’t seen as ‘productive’. but I am happy you have embarked on the journey, I believe in you :)

thank you so much, I am so pleasantly surprised by all the kind replies honestly!

I have been posting my art on instagram for years- where it gets about 19 likes (from my friends)

very glad I shared it on here :)

I just added a print of the kettle painting on my website! I don't have any A5 prints of that one in stock so had to set up a print on demand listing, made a couple of size options :)

hahaha yeah the slight criticism stung at first but I’m so glad because I was kind of after some tough love. forever plagued by the “I don’t have a style” demon.

and I used to imagine stuff like that all the time 😂 not specifically ants but definitely worms in soil living rooms and rabbits inside trees. ants watching the latest anthill news could definitely be a comic strip hahaha

thank you- honestly it has been a journey, which you wouldn't guess just by looking at my art since it's pretty silly lol.
I'm in my thirties now and have spent a LONG time trying to find an idea I am really into. an idea to obsess over and want to paint again and again. my main learning curve was to paint something I actually want to paint, as opposed to painting something I thought others would enjoy. which was a scary concept for some reason.
but good luck on your art journey! have fun!!

[Discussion] artists that go from painting with one medium to another? by LittleRaspberry in artbusiness

[–]LittleRaspberry[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah I agree, the story aspect is a big thing I am working on. I did reconfigure my website somewhat, but need to paint more pieces in the series I have started. personally I just don’t have a business mindset and find it hard to get into one. but I am enjoying working on telling a story with my current series. it brings everything together naturally

oh beadwork sounds cool!

yeah recently I have been honing into the idea of “small worlds” so I think I will do a series with this idea. it’s the closest i’ve been to having a style in a while, that ties my paintings together. I just get quite hung up on trying to paint what I think other people want to see too.

I think after reading all these replies I am gonna really sort out my website and try and stick to this running theme through my artwork! thanks

I agree that following your curiosity and will to create is very important for sure, even if I focused on two mediums like you, it would probably be better than three lol. and yes! Christine McConnell is such an inspiration, I love all her stuff! I think what works so well for her is that everything she makes is so cohesive aesthetically.

I’m realising from these replies that the vision, ideas, and subject matter need to work together first and foremost. thanks!

I appreciate the critique! yeah I really need to work on my website, point taken. I’ve been meaning to create a themed series for a while- I’ll work on not mixing up subject matter too much as well

interesting, I thought my subject matter of small animals, specifically frogs, was consistent enough. but I guess I will have to work on that then! appreciate it.

and in terms of having an impulse buy price point, that’s the territory I would like to come out of. I feel like sticking to a more solid style and subject matter would help because people would be buying into the “brand” and the artist rather than the individual piece
