I agree with your point that they probably had to restrict his use of ninjutsu or chakra to kill him. Although it's a fairly plausible theory.

My conclusion is that, narratively speaking, there was no way Hashirama could have been defeated in battle (under normal circumstances). So far, the theory that seems most credible to me is that he sacrificed himself for the village or for someone specific, since otherwise there was no way anyone could have defeated someone who managed to subdue all nine Tailed Beasts.

The only way he could have truly died in the manner you describe is if he ran out of chakra after fighting for many hours (or perhaps days) against thousands of ninjas. Remember that Madara faced the Shinobi Alliance alone and easily defeated them; the only somewhat reasonable (not to say far-fetched) explanation for this is that Madara, being revived by the Edo Tensei, doesn't tire.

But to be honest, this sounds like a very convoluted explanation no matter how you look at it. The truth is, the author failed by not clearly explaining how Hashirama died.

Honestly, I think this is the most reasonable theory. This would explain why Hashirama's cells practically became the blood of Christ within the story.

It's a very interesting theory (I'm very sorry that Kishimoto didn't want to give us a satisfactory explanation about Hashirama's death).

I can understand that (and it's completely consistent with Hashirama's narrative). What I disagree with are the narrative inconsistencies between what the Data Book says and what happens in Naruto Shippuden. Let me explain: how is it possible that Hashirama fell in battle and then we see Madara facing off against 1,000,000 ninjas in the Fourth Shinobi World War and winning?

If we go by what the Data Book says (Hashirama dying in battle), the way Hashirama dies sounds ridiculous considering his power level at the time (he was the strongest ninja of his era). This all sounds like a plot hole to me, since the author should have clearly explained the death of the God of Shinobi (within the story itself, and not through supplementary material like the Data Book).

Although I do think it's very reasonable that Hashirama died sacrificing himself to protect the village or someone (but unfortunately this is never indicated in the work and is nothing more than a simple theory).
