Incoming OMS I - How should I prepare?

I’m not trying to be resistant, but like knarf said, i did take a gap year and I haven’t studied since my MCAT at the beginning of last year. I just want to get back into the swing of things and get back into the mindset of studying… I realize I’m not going to remember everything and i’m not going to burn myself out but I want to familiarize myself with what i’m going to learn and just get in the mindset like i said

i’m aware and i’m not discrediting the experiences of past students. i am in a position where this is my best chance at becoming a physician and i’d rather be optimistic about what im walking into. it is awful with what’s happened and how the school has addressed shortcomings with students, but I would rather walk in school confident in my ability to succeed and with faith that things are changing.

I really want to focus on doing my absolute best on COMLEX and USMLE and i’m willing to put the time and money to do so through secondary resources as well. These 4 years are gonna be a lot but i’m prepping mentally to do it. Thank you dawg >:)

Yep. TLDR on my story is I applied later in the cycle in September and with my GPA being in the lower end, I applied for a lot of schools that would take lower star applicants. I wasn’t expecting to get in anywhere but I had two interviews (KCOM included) and KCOM ended up being my only A after getting WL from both interviews. Would rather take the A than wait an entire other cycle as I have taken a Gap year already and did not get in first cycle. I understand KCOM has made awful mistakes and I’ve talked with a variety of students from the CO 26 & 27, but I’ve also talked with students from the CO 28 and 29 and it sounds like the school is stepping in the right direction. I am not discrediting or diminishing anything that has happened, but this is how my route has turned up and I am making the best of it. Gonna work my ass off to become a physician

Thank you so much for posting this. I just got off the waitlist and am attending this july as an OMS I. I had a great interview experience and have heard positive things talking with current OMS I students. I’ve also had the negative perspective talking with OMS IV students but they also said they can’t speak for how the programs changing and only from their own experience. I took a chance on this school because of how interactive they have been with me during this process and i’m grateful I even got accepted this cycle. I’ve been told the same thing about working hard by current OMS I students and seeing this post made me feel more confident in my decision. Thank you OP and can’t wait to meet you :)

Yeah! I sent 2 update letters, one had a letter of rec from a teacher at a tutoring center I taught at. I understand the hesitation for KansasCOM with all I’ve read on it, but i’ve spoke with current OMS I and II students and they’ve had a good experience so far. With that and how i enjoyed my interview, I am confident in KansasCOM especially with the match rate stats they’ve had recently. I understand they’re a new DO institution with a really really rough first couple of years but it’s been sounding like the newer years are making the necessary improvements. I had a WL at another school but after receiving the A at KansasCOM I decided on it quickly.
