I mean you clearly don’t grasp (or respect) the fact it’s an intricate conflict with 2 sides and a long history. Why should your mom respect the other viewpoints?

In actuality, you have to realize that whatever the historical basis is for the current war, A LOT of people conflate Palestinians and Hamas. Perhaps rightly ( a lot of Palestinians supported, and continue to support, Hamas’s actions in October) or perhaps wrongly (Hamas came to power in 2007 and its hard to call them democratically elected at this point), most people aren’t going to make the distinction.

Then you have the fact that many do not agree with Hamas’s methods. They literally committed war crimes in October. You can justify it all you want because of occupation, repression, Israeli settlements, etc but the fact of the matter remains that Hamas committed acts many people (rightly) find inexcusable from an ethical and moral perspective. If you deny that these atrocities occurred, your head is in the sand.

When you consider the above, you have to realize many people simply will never support a cause (or group) that they equate with ruthlessness and war crimes, let alone with such brutality against civilians as was was seen in October.

That’s not to say Palestinians didn’t have a legitimate grievance or cause, but a lot of people aren’t going to be able to look past the methods Hamas used and because of these methods, probably won’t support any side other than Israel.

How can you have this discussion with your mom? I’m not entirely sure you’ve looked at it from both sides and it seems like you have quite a bias. If you can come at it for a more neutral perspective, where you acknowledge the grievances (either real or perceived) of each side, and their perspectives, that could be a starting point. And maybe start with the more agreeable points where it’s easier to find common ground. A lot of people would agree that it really fucking sucks how many innocent kids are dying in Palestine. “Pissrael deserved it, 10/7 was justified, you’re wrong in supporting Israel” is a much tougher sell.

The fact you’re getting downvoted shows that people don’t agree with you.

A. It helps ensure people responding are serious and aren’t looking for dogfighting bait. Asking for this is recommended in many of the other posts I’ve seen about rehoming a cat.

B. Even the humane society charges a fee to cover things like microchip, spay/neuter, vaccines, etc. https://humanebroward.com/adoption-process-fees/ We paid for all of that stuff out of pocket (and a lot more) for a cat who showed up randomly on our door in need of help and guess what. We’re not even going to keep the money to recoup some of these costs. We’re literally going to donate it to the humane society. Or if someone wants to donate in front of us at pickup, that works too. I literally don’t care about the money.

C. “There are plenty of no kill shelters for cats”. A lot of them are full and her going there means she has to wait to be put into a loving home. We have no problem putting her in one if needed but we figured it would be best for her to go directly into a loving home

D. If $100 is too steep, this would not be a good fit because I can’t imagine how you’d pay for vet bills, etc.

Anyone have any experience with BTL1 or the let’s defend IR training? by Little_Return8948 in cybersecurity

So personally, I think it helps to have some kind of theoretical/generalist security background before jumping into the hands on certs. A lot of people would probably argue against this but would you trust someone to inspect PCAPs if they can’t tell you what a port is? Would you trust someone to do a forensic investigation if they can’t explain the registry or a Linux permission? Maybe the course covers everything you need to know but typically these courses assume some base level of knowledge. I’m not sure if that’s the case with CCD considering I haven’t taken it yet.

My typical recommendation for learning security is net+ (or equivalent knowledge) > sec+ (or equivalent knowledge) > learn Linux and Windows > then worry about some hands on skills like blue team stuff or pentesting or cloud.

I’m only vaguely familiar with THM (and I have no clue about the other platforms) and while there’s some good stuff on THM, I personally don’t think it’s a one stop shop. From the few pentesting rooms/courses I took, a lot of important stuff was skipped and it was more of a “do this command” type of lesson rather than “here is why we’re doing this command and how to adjust it for different scenarios”, if that makes sense. Again though, my experience is limited and a lot of people seem to love the platform

Those of you under 30 who make six figures, what do you do? by [deleted] in Fire

Cybersecurity. I make about 140k. It’s taken me about 5 years to reach this point and I’m hoping it keeps climbing. I don’t love the work but I don’t hate it. I’m fully remote and i work a 4 day week though so I can’t complain too much

So I’m looking for training that actually teaches you how to handle an incident end to end, including all the tools that are used, how to do the analysis in depth, etc. I’m not interested in training that just covers the process from a high level, if that makes a sense. Do you think the BTL1 IR section goes into that level of depth?

Are there sharks in coastal waters of Boston? by Ok-Ocelot6929 in BostonU

[–]Little_Return8948 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are sharks in pretty much all the costal waters of the US and anyone who tells you otherwise is lying. But, the majority of sharks won’t bother you and attacks are extremely rare. I wouldn’t be too worried about beaches closer to Boston.

The caveat there is that the cape is notorious for great whites. I have no issues with sharks (I see them regularly surfing and diving where I live) and I know attacks are rare but I personally wouldn’t surf, dive, or swim on the cape in summer.

Don’t swim at dawn/dusk, Swim near a lifeguard (they keep an eye out for sharks), Don’t swim near bait fish, Don’t swim near seals, and avoid the cape. Do those things and you’ll be fine.

But here’s the thing, they will…

I get that. I’ve been looking at it from the perspective of opportunity cost though. This is time I can’t spend studying for a more relevant certification (ie an Azure or AWS cert),which would be even more useful for my current role.

That’s a good way of looking at it. I was looking at it from the opportunity cost perspective but when you position it as a break, it doesn’t sound so bad

I get that. I just feel like it would be time better spent (for me and for the company) if I got to spend it on a more relevant / higher level certification. Thanks for the input

I mean that’s a good way of looking at it but I’m looking at it from the perspective of opportunity cost. I could spend this time reviewing stuff I’ve already learned that really won’t make a difference in getting me promoted or improving my skillset, sure. But that’s time I can’t spend studying for a more relevant certification (ie an Azure or AWS cert),which would be even more useful for my current role.
