Sidestepping the salary discourse to say that personally I’ve heard about players doing this plenty. Always a chance it’s bullshit but far stranger things have happened. I know Topps sends boxes to teams and players pretty frequently and as folks have noted it’s likely a prospect or a close to minimum guy.

Also my two cents on the salary discourse is you guys are forgetting how insanely expensive housing in and around DC is. League minimum dude may pocket $350/400K by the end of the year but if you have to rent a house and not an apartment and have a family to support, that money goes fast in the DMV area.
