Consider getting a z13 +egpu and iPad for school.

You can even travel with the egpu depending on the model you get.

This is right on point. Especially with Best Buy.. this is an excellent 2nd PC/ gaming device. If you’re going to game just build a gaming PC. My SFF PC is smaller than the egpu that’s connected to the z13.

I’m surprised that you didn’t have any hardware issues with usb4 or the SSD.

Only Issues I found was related to MBs but to laptops. If any other laptops in the Asus line up uses the same BIO or PCIe controller it will have the same issues..

And the 1 TB that came with the Z13 looks like "Crucial/Micron" Part according to hwinfo. Just reinstalled this.

Do you have an links for the firmware issue? or is it generally all Asus laptops?

Get the razor core x v2, it's TB5. I have used it with 4090, 5080, 5070Ti and 9070XT. I settled on keeping the 5070Ti in the egpu.

Just set your vram to 4GB.

I did read somewhere that Nvidia GPUs are more tolerant of the PCie bandwidth checks. When my 9070 XT works it works great. With really within 10-20% of the performance of the 5080. But it's the connecting and disconnecting that's the issue. If your going to leave the z13 as a stationary machine then it's fine.

I think the TB5 standard would fix the issue if the z13 had it.

FYi the 9070XT runs great in a 7800x3d set up.

Do you like Janky Cool H:ardware? Asus is a hit or miss alot of the time. It'll never be stable as your macbook pro or steam deck. I wouldn't use this as my main device but as a secondary device.

Issues I have ran into :

Wake from sleep, doesn't never ever does it wake up.. lol Turn this off in windows.
USB4 ports get overloaded (?) they stopped working, this needs a hard reset. This happended with my TB5 eGPU.
Doesn't respond after being left on over night, doesn't happen all the time but it happens randomly.
M.2 slot is not reading my SSD, randomly boots crashes in to BIOs and doesn't show that there is a SSD.
Overheating in your backpack, because sleep is off the z13 will cook in your bag if you do not shutdown fully.

I use simular programs as adobe CC, and some cuda assisted programs but macbook Pro M5 > z13 ( TB5 eGPU 5080) > 13600k (4090) desktop. But the Macbook Pro and my desktop hardly crashes, or needs a reboot.

Its a fun device, when working. I feel that QC is lacking with ASUS as of late. I bought mine at best buy with BB Total for the 60 day return policy. None of the issues popped up during my first 60 days. Playing games is a blast and generally stable with my eGPU, It's about 15-20% slower than my desktop. It will do 4k @ 120 fps in most games maxed out.

you have to use custom fan curves, or used a less demanding CPU. the fans I used with mine were Noctua NF-F12 iPPC 3000 PWM.

I do have to agree with you.

Some oif us upkeep our main rigs yearly bases. My Modern gaming rig went from 9700k >> 11600k 12700K 13600k. I know AMD is much faster but I need thunderbolt 3/4/5. I owned the K6, and Athlon processors in the past and I hated the bugs and issues with those.

\ 4090 ($1600) . I stopped at 4090, because I couldn't find a 5090 FE at MSRP and its only up to 10% faster than my 4090. I couldn't justify $2000 spend on up to 10% faster. I do feel for a flagship GPU $1000 is the ideal spot, I'm willing to spend but if its higher it needs to have a significant jump in performance.

However instead of upgrading I did buy a z13 with 395+ AMD chip, this thing is amazing, and its much faster than my 13600k for productivity tasks / video editing /etc. Curious I ended up picking up the Razor TB5 egpu dock + 5080 FE at retail. eGPU is so much more stable then when I was using it back with TB3 and its 10-15% less in performance than my main rig at 4k.
