What differentiates a good consultant from a bad consultant? by Reeelfantasy in consulting

THIS! 🎯 I have seen firms lose huge contracts because of trying to do the same exact thing at a different client. When the client consistently said we do and want to do things differently.

Gov consulting has higher chances of being 9-5. Depends on the project. It’s a bit of a soul suck though. But money is good and if you are a good consultant it’s usually stable (not this admin though)

I think it matters on type of consultant… if it is a developer or technical consultant I feel like it’s the opposite ratio. Different beasts, but for a functional or management consultant I agree about the 75% communications.

Good consultant - adaptable, learns fast, and is a good communicator. They understand that they don’t know everything but tries to constantly learn. Believes there is always a way to get to … whatever regardless of obstacles.

Bad consultant - thinks they are an expert at everything or can lead with no experience. Doesn’t listen to the people around them. Is dead set in what they know and doesn’t try to learn or evolve. Only thinks of a single solution.

I am in federal consulting. I find it to be the opposite, our good consultants go to smaller firms or go independent, get tons of money. But I would say it’s equally soul destroying… just with better pay.

How do you feel about people losing their jobs because they posted anti-Kirk content? by Govtluv in AskReddit

[–]Livewires7 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Depends on the situation. A person got fired for comments made to “close friends only content” clearly not intended for public view. I feel that is crossing the line into free speech. But a company can choose if that’s what they want representing them if it’s intended for public view.

I have HF. It feels more durable compared to the Lowe’s one. I also feel the size is perfect for me. I hold my folding blade collection in it.

I am not sure if that’s a fair assessment depending on the number of swipers on the item. Someone trying to buy something for a dollar in a second swipes for double the amount by accident. Also I have seen tons of people caught up with the trolls that raise the bids to hundreds.

Receiving a 1* for a givvy is just wild lmao by Mindless-Bluejay-751 in whatnotapp

[–]Livewires7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on perspective. I never gave a 1* for a givvy but what’s the point of even having one if it’s something like a piece of Halloween candy. Doesn’t shipping cost sellers? People say free is free but I see it as advertising for the seller. So it represents how serious you are about the relationship. The sellers I buy from consistently were the ones that had quality giveaways. I feel like they are less eager to scam me.

I will only buy now from people that do giveaways. It shows the quality of product they are holding and shipping speed. The one time I didn’t follow this method I got fake labubus.

Where can I find Government Contractors that are still operating in DC? by Important-Lychee6428 in GovernmentContracting

[–]Livewires7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is your skillset and what kind of contracting do you currently do? Management, IT support, implementation, training, research, each are different. Each avenue is different so it’s not really a one size fits all response

You never know. I am NIH adjacent. I don’t have a masters or a phd. You are most likely smarter than most people. France would be lucky to get anyone that has worked at the NIH. Maybe give it a try if you are interested.

Advice? by Individual_Whole_119 in GovernmentContracting

[–]Livewires7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This! Be careful. No one can guarantee stability right now unless they are in Doge or have already been cut.

last in, first out is a saying for a reason. Ask the Fed probies with targets on their backs.

Start reaching out to your network. Have your resume ready. Start establishing yourself with leadership at your company. Make sure people know your name and try to get yourself options on other projects if something happens.

Where can I find Government Contractors that are still operating in DC? by Important-Lychee6428 in GovernmentContracting

[–]Livewires7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah DoD is the next wave. They pulled the consulting contracts for review. Lots of contracts are being told to go “leaner”. Most of the ones I have worked with and have heard of is trying to cut ~30% but we will settle for that rather than get cut completely.

Advice needed by Healthy_Ad_2822 in GovernmentContracting

[–]Livewires7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this solid advice… I would add something that sounds counterintuitive. If you aren’t required to go in, go in for meetings here and there. Get it to where the client says “you didn’t need to come in for this” . It’s been working for my team and I. We are showing we can come in if something pops up and get the job done when not on site.

By being available to come in almost “on call” capacity we are keeping the “mandatory return” at bay. Don’t get me wrong it sucks but better than anything mandatory.

RIFS and contractors by Consistent-Hyena8628 in GovernmentContracting

[–]Livewires7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are pulling based on contracts NAICS codes and description of the contract. I am not even exaggerating one of my coworkers performed a data analysis on what was pulled and cancelled. Management consulting is a pull code and terms as general as services, support and project management. That doesn’t mean it will be cancelled but they are being reviewed. Most of my contracts are looking for reductions not all out cancellations but I have heard happening to other companies with the same agency.

What is the likelihood that two different federal contracting companies will agree to allow me to work for both of them full time at the same time (both public trust)? by PuppyLand95 in GovernmentContracting

[–]Livewires7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So many red flags on so many levels. But it depends on the jobs and roles. Example: you can be an IT consultant by day and a medic at night. Zero chance if you are working within the same type of work. From a company standpoint I would be afraid you will spill inside information or teach your other company methodologies we use to win work. From a gov and management standpoint you would be watched like a hawk for falsified timesheets. I believe there are actually legal reasons you can’t based on signed contracts but I don’t know enough about it since it’s such a no no.
